Acknowledging up front that this is the edgiest of edge cases. The Edge Lord of edge cases, if you will.

When I add an image to my signature, the markup is corrected so it includes the image's current dimensions in addition to its SRC. Is there a way to set the dimensions to "auto" or otherwise make the image tag work without dimensions?

I've been using Backloggery's signature. It has anywhere from 1-3 rows of games, depending on recent activity. Unlike 99.9% of the other signature generators on the Internet, depending on how many games are shown, the height changes.

Since GameTZ's signature markup always specifies dimensions, some percentage of the time, the image looks stretched or smooshed. Right now (at the time of this post), it's stretched, since I just beat a game and the rest of my "Now Playing" list is temporarily hidden. Being able to "auto" the dimensions would fix this problem.

Thoughts? Is this possible? Are we forcing dimensions to keep people's megasigs from taking over the page layout?

Read your post and now understand. Edited out details I posted.

I understand the issue. It's a tricky problem. The signature dimension stuff is there for good reasons, though. Messing with it may mean some sig images are too big.

There is something I could try, though. It has been a while since this was put in place. There are some newer ways to do the width scaling that may work better and more universally (I think what you mean by "auto"). I think I can specify a max-width and let the html/css do the scaling instead of me forcing it with height/width numbers.

Give me a few days to play around with it and see if I can come up with something that works... no promises, but maybe.

Okay, I figured it was protection against Godzilla sigs. I appreciate you taking the time to explore it a little.

The more I think about it, the more it doesn't seem possible.

GameTZ's forum uses hashtag jump (e.g. you'll generally see a '#new' on the end of most topic viewing URLs) to position people at the new post in a topic. To get that right, the page has to know it's height fairly well from the start (otherwise it jumps then the page redraws as it fills in the image and you end up in the wrong place). This is why I do a lot of stuff to put dimensions on images. It's not just sig images, but any image that gets posted will eventually get dimensions slapped on it by a script that hourly. The inline twitter thing also breaks this and I have no fix for that either (other than turning it off).

There is also a width issue as an image can overrun the left/right size of the topic page, but I think I already have some stuff that copes with that (it's an easier problem and what I was thinking of last night). Really, I suspect I could remove the signature dimension setter (that happens when you save your sig). But, even if I did that, the hourly one would get it after you posted in each place you posted, and it's important that it do that because of the hashtag jumping issue. The results wouldn't be better just less consistent.

I don't know if that made any sense to you, but I no longer see a possible way to fix this. If there was some way to force the image to be a certain size (it could generate invisible padding perhaps), that would work a bit better, but we don't have control over that.

I do think this came up in the past as well, but I don't recall if we had any solution to it. I doubt it. Maybe, I'll try searching old posts....

This is also why embedded tweets mess up the jump to #new functionality then? The heights of those tweets is unknown till they load, so your calculation is off?

Yes. It's not really my calculation but the browser's. The browser does the hashtag jump before it knows the height of certain things (either an image without a height dimension or a twitter frame... other things could do it too). You can disable inlined tweets if it's annoying.
