This one hides the top bar at GTZ, and I can't really hide it.image
And this one just adds a ton of white space at the bottom. No scripts or anything, just a lot of unnecessary space.
I'm not a subscriber and I don't mind ads, but whoever runs both of these needs to start running ones that don't screw with the page. :(
If I could do so regularly, I would. I have no problem with ads on the site... as long as the ad servers aren't dicks about it.
Appreciate the subtime. Thank you.
Note that you're using the new layout on a mobile device, not using the mobile version of the site. That's fine, but I just thought I'd make note of that since you said "Mobile ads". I don't think these are mobile ads. Maybe that's part of why something is going wrong (kinda narrow width?), I don't know.
I know you've complained about ads acting badly in the past as well. You say, "I have no problem with ads" but clearly you do have expectations for ads to behave. I can understand that completely. I don't like that this is happening either. I may have even higher expectations myself (I use an adblocker and other things to help fight them off, also just don't use the Internet that much anymore). Ads suck and they basically ruined the Internet (well, the problem is more that the Internet is "free" and this lead to ads which resulted in everything being terrible, but that's another story).
Anyway, probably like I said last time, I have very little fine control over ads that run here. I can turn them off entirely, and make no money (and GTZ dies a little faster, I guess). But, otherwise, there isn't much I can do. So yeah, this sucks.
I made a change just now that will disable ads for you even if you're not subscribed. It's not like those ads you tolerate make me any appreciable money, so it seems easiest to turn them off. I don't personally want you to suffer. If you can't afford to subscribe, I feel bad for you on some level. So, this is me helping you out. Not perfect, but that's life.
Wait. Bill, what do you mean I'm using the normal version of the site? I thought mobile was used by default by Chrome on my phone. I just checked and Chrome seems to think this is mobile...
Okay so apparently Chrome is supposed to load the mobile version of any site, if available, unless you tell it to load the normal version by checking a box in its menu (and it doesn't work much of the time.)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Responsive_web_desig...
But this site doesn't seem to do that if you load it on mobile. I dunno what kind of settings you have to add to the server to support this, but it's better this way instead of forcing it on folks.
As for the ad removal... I seriously don't mind them. So while I appreciate the gesture, I would prefer it if you could revert my account to how it was. I'll just start using the mobile site on my phone, like I'm supposed to. Thanks. :)
But, you do mind them. You've complained about the ads to me more than once.
It's not a gesture. It's a solution, for me at least. Apologies if if bothers you. I'd just like to resolve this, so it doesn't come up again.
I realize it misses the point on some level, but since I don't know of a way to fix what you're complaining about (it's out of my control as far as I know), it does address it at least (I suspect the complaints will stop).
You probably won't like the mobile site. As I mentioned, it's limited. It was designed more for a time when phones had smaller screens. I haven't worked on it in many years and don't plan to work on it anymore. This is partly why I don't force the mobile site on people. I'm now worried you'll start complaining about the mobile site as it has many deficiencies.
I am not recommending that you switch to the mobile site. I think you should stick with the new layout that you're likely used to. The ads will be gone, so I think you'll be happier when your subtime runs out again. I'll be happier if you're happier too. That's all I'm trying to do here; doing what I can to make us both happier.
Another reason that I don't force the mobile site on people is that the new layout is meant to be responsive. It uses a responsive framework (Bootstrap). But, like most things, the promise falls short of reality. Maybe that's partly my fault for not being good enough to figure out all the intricacies, but I did try and I'm not a complete idiot.
Generally speaking, GTZ is in decline and it's hard for me to justify putting major effort into anything here. If there's some quick fix I can do, I'm willing. I can even add features if they are easy. But, stuff like the app, developing the mobile layout, and the new layout each took me months. I recognize they are flawed and I feel bad about that. But, I don't have any feasible way to fix them as far as I know. At this stage, I'm just looking to maintain the site and keep it going as it slowly declines. It's a little sad, but we had a good run.
