What do you think about the close topic button also strike through the thread topic in the forums?

Most people either manually cross out iafter they sell or are done with the thread. Or they manually edit it to say "CLOSED"

Or perhaps a new button that says "Sold" or "End Topic".

"please delete" always works, right?

This seems like a decent idea. Let me look into it to see how feasible it may be...

There's already a close topic "button" (more a link or in a dropdown, depending on which layout one uses). It's actually a subscriber-only feature and it's paired with the "re-open topic" action (which is the thing most requested). This actually changes the state of the topic such that it can't be posted to anymore.

But, it sounds like you're maybe talking about something else, something lighter and more for marketplace stuff that is sold or no longer available. I take it people rarely use the real close on such topic, but instead use strikeout instead. Still, it's less clear to me what to do given that we already have a close topic feature. I could try to also strikeout the topic subject in the topic if it's "closed" as well to indicate that more... though, I'm not sure if that's really the issue as closed topic also tend to get less emphasis as open topics get displayed more.

Yea, close-topic I've used a handful of times only but I didn't realize it's a sub only feature.

I was thinking it would be a nice feature to close out a sale topic that is no longer available.

What I typically do is to strikeout both the topic and the OP once the item is sold.

I also see alot of people asking for delete like Kommie mentioned when they sold something or they just update the Topic manually to say SOLD.

It's just for convenience sake really so if it's alot of work, def not worth the effort.

But if it's just one conditional line of code attached to a button "Sold" that strikes out the Topic(OP optional), it would make the topics a bit uniform and it would be easier to mark something that is no longer available.

So "close" isn't a good name for this. Maybe "Sold" but that may not always be accurate (some may want to take it down a topic for other reasons). They may want to actually close/delete it too, but that's not generally allowed given that other people may be using the topic.

Putting a new button/link on a forum topic can be an issue. There is generally a lack of space for it Arguably... I tend to feel like the old layout is very busy with too many links all over the place, but I know most regular users prefer it. Given that it seems like it wouldn't be used that often, it's hard to justify perhaps. Also, it's unclear if many would use it at all. They may have their own way of doing it or may be lazy or don't care or know what it is. Some may abuse it too, though it's hard to know how until it's added.

It's not one line of code, but it is doable. There's a "actions" list on topics that has some stuff the OP can do (like close/re-open). I could add an action for "sold" (or some better name for it). It would only be for marketplace forums. Then, I guess it would put a flag on the topic record and the code that displays it would do the #strikeout# when it's displayed perhaps (in a few places). Also, maybe a way to reverse the flag, so an "unsold" action. There could be some issues with markup if the subject line already had strikeout used in it.

I'm just not sure it's the best thing to do. For the last several years, I've been trying not to add every little feature to the site as it can have drawbacks (clutter/distraction/confusion). It's more true with additions to already complicated things (like most forum stuff). As always, if I hear that other people would be psyched for this feature, it would motivate me more.

It's not that hard to edit the subject to say SOLD.

If you want to delete the contents of the thread or not its fine, but if you get a PM from someone when you have already marked the topic sold, I would be surprised.

I don't get it, are we that lazy that 2 extra clicks and 4 key presses consume that much time that we need a "Sold" action?

Not about laziness at all. It's streamlining the process.

Also to note there's been times where there's not enough room to fit the strike out codes(4 characters).

Collectively 2 extra clicks and 4 key presses, over years, is time wasted.

Wipe out the topic and just say "sold", problem solved. The amount of time that Bill would have to put into the update and maintenance is probably more than the amount of combined time in updates you spend over the years.

It was merely a suggestion. And we have bill here to tell us if it's feasible or not. So what are you speaking on his behalf for?

Sounds like you need to rally the forum to sign a change.org petition to get this feature added ;)

Eh. The hostile tone was wholly unnecessary. Like I said, it was a suggestion to make the site more user friendly.

I'm totes cool if bill decide against it.

I'm against it, though open to reconsidering if there's more people who want/need it and some way to do it that makes more sense.

I often open a forum just to see a ton of items already sold/gone. I'd rather they not come up in the list at all. Currently I just ignore them all right off the bat and then browse the rest.
