Anyone else getting the BS java script "ads" that take over your browser? They just started this week on GTZ. From what I've read online it has to do with (hidden) shady advertisements.

If not I've denied a lot of free gift cards.. lol

I used to, but then started using ublock origin and no issues since.

As a subscriber, you have the ability to turn off ads on the site. Just go to the subscriber options page and uncheck the box for "show advertisements".

I'm sorry I didn't reply to this before.

It seems like similar stuff has been reported in the past, though I've never had much luck tracking it down. If you search for this kind of thing, there are people talking about it and they seem to think Google AdSense is being exploited. Google doesn't officially acknowledge it as far as I know. Google tends to recommend that I check my code for malware. I have done that and I'm fairly certain I don't have any (and it seems unlikely given how GTZ was made).

I have seen some sketchy stuff in AdSense in the past (unrelated to this, but stuff like some crappy site I had that suddenly was making $100s/day in ads and the clicks were coming from Russia). I've reported this kind of thing a few times in the past to Google. They've never replied to me, but I also didn't get the ad money. So, I tend to think they are often fighting fraud, malware, and scams behind the scenes and eventually clear it out. But, they keep it secret and don't say much about it as far as I can tell.

So, my assumption is that you're more-or-less correct in that some shady code can get into AdSense ads. Google will likely deal with it eventually, but does not always stop it before it happens.

There is some possibility that your computer/device is infected with malware in some way (some stuff I found seemed to imply this, though hard to prove and didn't seem like any clear smoking gun). Running some malware remover might be worth trying, especially if it happens on other sites too.

I think KCPenguins was not subscribed when he first posted, but I see he is now. So yeah, that is one way to deal with this. Though, I don't mean for the ads to be used as extortion to force people to subscribe or else you get malware. I have very little control or ability to know what's going on with the AdSense ads I use and they do bring in some decent money (though less and less as time goes on).

I use ublock origin myself (not here, but almost everywhere else online). It's OK with me if you want to use an ad blocker here too. Whether you block ads or subscribe or not is not likely to save GTZ either way, so don't worry about it.

Yeah, I know there is no malicious intent by Bill. And the pop-ups stop when ads are removed. Pretty sure it's imbedded in the ads, though I can't guarantee my device isn't infected. It seems to be site specific (not just here, gamefaqs is another), so I'm assuming it's a specific ad or three in some ad database.

It must be the ads. I get them here, playstationtrophies and yahoo. I factory reset my phone and tried the top 2 Malware blockers. Seems like they get through no matter what and both blocker are actively blocking but don't see them. I run full scans and nothing.

What's odd is its only on the phone, never once got them on pc.

One thing I read is that going into your google options and disabling personalized ads may fix this.

I tried this and it seemed to work for a while, but they still came back eventually. They seem harmless so long as I don't click them (not sure what would happen if you click them). At first I was all freaked out, but now that I understand whats going on I just close chrome and move on.

This.

But for sites where you can't, noscript is your friend.

Seen this ad in multiple places (Reddit being the largest site I've seen this on). I just think its an ad unit being exploited and it would eventually get corrected by the Ad server.
