I apologize if this topic has been done before but I got to thinking about music and this popped into my head. I was wondering what you all thought was the best video game SERIES music was. not a certain game of a series, but as a whole. Personally I am putting my money on the legend of Zelda series with DKC being a close number two. what are yours?

On/off topic. Posted in Zelda forum but thought I'd share here too if you're into Zelda music:

I'd say Zelda and Final Fantasy.

It's gotta be Castlevania for me. I can't think of another series with as many iconic songs in what I feel is the crown jewel of Konami's legacy.

Mario for me, some of the best representation of every era's sound hardware. The overused NSMB wah wah stuff is the only music that isn't really great. It's got catchy bleeps, jazzy stuff like 3D World, orchestral pieces, and now we've even got vocals.

Depends on your favorite games and what you grew up with. I can hum tunes from Mega Man, Street Fighter, Mario, Zelda, Punch Out, etc all day. I can't say that about any other games released in the last 15 years or so.

Mega Man, but ho boy, Symphony of the Night gives it a run for its money real hard. Good as CV tunes can get, Mega Man's got some serious bangers that never die.

I wanted to say Zelda but it's a shame that one of the best songs in the entire freaking series is also one of the ONLY songs in that particular game.

Magic the Gathering (I am making an RPG Maker game using music from the various Duels games.. then you will see)

also Sonic, Ace Combat. I guess those are my top 3. Mega Man, Castlevania and FF are great too, of course <trollface> if we're just talking about the music. </trollface

How has no one mentioned Katamari Damacy yet? I love that series' crazy tunes! Some other series soundtracks that come to mind as consistently excellent are Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, The Witcher, BioShock, and the Team ICO games. I'm tempted to put Legacy of Kain / Soul Reaver up there as well. It's been so long since I replayed any of that series but I seem to remember the music (and voice acting) always being top notch.

I'm partial to Dragon Quest, Zelda, and Resident Evil, myself.

The Terminator for Sega CD has one of the most amazing sound tracks ever. Never even knew about it until just a few weeks ago. One that I never really see mentioned anywhere is Eternal Sonata. Most of its music was written by Frédéric Chopin and its a game which takes place inside Chopin's dreams and is entirely about him and his music.

Everyone always hates on Destiny 2, but that opening song when you first start it up is awesome.

Banjo Kazooie's music is some top shelf work. His boss battle tune he wrote for Mario + Rabbids was fantastic.

I wanted to mention that my favorite music in a game is probably from Mario Kart 8, but what I think is the "best" music probably goes to the hybrid sound compositions and narrative instrumentals of the Silent Hill series. Silent Hill 2 is polished and iconic, but the first game's extreme sounds and bold wails left an impression on me that hold up to this day in my own work.

Final Fantasy would be mine as well. I've played about 15 FF games and I can't think of a single one with a soundtrack I didn't love.

@dustin11 The Eternal Sonata OST is god tier, for sure. Both the game and the OST are so underrated. It's not even just Chopin's stuff that's amazing. Sakuraba's original compositions are absolutely fantastic. I've got the soundtrack added to a playlist on Youtube and I still listen to it every now and then.

Yeah, for sure. Its actually difficult at times to distinguish between Chopin and Sakuraba work. Some of the overworld tracks like "Silence and Life" were awesome and fit the game so well.

Probably biased as it has my favorite all time game, but Metroid has always been my #1.

I'll have to go with Final Fantasy, though there are tons of great soundtracks. Aerith's theme always makes it rain... directly into my eyes. Terra's theme, Cyan's theme, Sephiroth, FF8's vocals, everything with chocobos, it's all good.

The Zelda and Mega Man series have a special place in my heart, but lately I have been super into the music from the Persona series (especially 3, 4 & 5). Making great music is one thing, but great music with catchy lyrics takes it to another level.

FInally someone mentions Persona, but no one has thought about Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) and the Shadow Hearts series. Those stand out to me.

I'm a huge fan of the music from the Castlevania series, 8 bit or otherwise. Symphony of the Night had great sound design and music too. Gives me a hit of nostalgia too, like watching old Angry Video Game Nerd episodes. This is a pretty sweet cover of "Bloody Tears" if anyone wants to watch it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_Q1rXhHL6g

I'm not big into VG soundtracks...but I would think Castlevania has to be near the top. I enjoy Mario music, and it's catchy...but those are almost more like Jingles - short, poppy, fun, catchy...but not really "songs".

Castlevania feels like music
