Well, it's a new year so shall we get into completing some games 'round here? As always, the goal of this challenge is to beat games on as many systems as possible in one calendar year. Nothing new there.

What is new however, is that in addition to monitoring the completion of specific systems, I'm going to keep up with the total number of individual games that everyone finishes. As you can see, everyone involved has their very own box which will serve to keep up both their systems and total games beaten. I've put mine in the format that I intend to use, but if everyone could just provide me with a list of their systems I can do the legwork of putting it together on this thread. Hopefully this will make it easier for everyone to keep up with their completions, as I realize not everyone is as anal as I am in monitoring their lists.

I'd like to give a shout-out to Razeak for coming up with the idea for this competition and I'm honored to carry the torch that he started. Well, that's about all I've got to say here, so let the gaming begin!

@Antipop Based on JD above's beating of SMB3, I think we need a SMB/Mario icon. We have Sonic and Link... I'd be up for beating another Mario game to earn it, since I already beat SML on the Game Boy

For Frank's Game of the Month thread, I finished Untitled Goose Game today on Xbox One.

I like a lot of things about this game. I like the crisp, cartoon-like art style and the clearly un-American representation of each of the human characters. I like how the goose moves, and having a dedicated honk button is just as welcome here as the dedicated quack button in Duck Game. I like that there are a million different toys to pick up, drag around, make messes with, and otherwise act as the tools of an agent of chaos. I fudging love the title, and the "Person of the Year" Time magazine spoof that circulated around this game's release. And apparently, the game was developed by the indigenous people of Australia and dedicated to their silent ancestors, which is probably the heaviest mic drop to conclude a video game since Mario learned that Subcon is all a dream.

As a structured game, though, Untitled Goose Game is just nonsense. The handling is stuff, and the controls are frustrating. Your opponents all run too fast. While the overall concept of a renegade goose watching the world burn is fantastic, the individual objectives are usually fairly bland when there's so much room to be wacky. The gathering objectives, in particular, left a bitter taste in my mouth, reminding me of those chain reactions in old Nintendo games where getting hit by a bullet bumped you into an enemy into an enemy into an enemy into another bullet into a bottomless pit. Oh, one of the humans took back your tomato? Well, crap, they damn well walked away with the entire picnic. Better luck next time. Hope it didn't take you that long to gather everything.

There's apparently a whole new set of objectives to complete once you finish the game. Maybe those are more entertaining. I'm not sure I was excited enough for the main game mode to give it much of another look, though.

I finished FRAMED on PC. Solid little puzzle game, although was unclear about the story and some felt more like luck when you got it right. Will definitely play FRAMED 2 soon.

Currently I'm working my way through Tearaway Unfolded on PS4. What a delightful game. It is relentlessly clever, though the pacing is a little slow. So far I think I'm around 1/3 of the way through (just left Gibbet Hill).

Got the plat for Mecho Wars: Desert Ashes on Vita. This was Castlevania-levels of frustration, not because of the difficulty but because of a glitchy mission that corrupted my save and made me replay the first quarter of the last campaign like 4 times. Coincidentally, those are the harder missions of the game lol Also, getting the online trophies was a pita, as the servers are an uber mess.

Glad to have finished that one.

I think my Castlevania focus is growing deeper. Rondo has been fun and I expect to beat it before long, but I've also been playing Symphony of the Night which is great. Plus I've been playing Mirror of Fate and while it's not amazing it reminded me of LoS as it's the bridge game of sort between LoS 1 and 2, and I rather enjoyed LoS1. Well I got curious about the characters in some of these and just went down a little bit of a rabbit hole learning about Leon, Simon, Trevor, Rictor, Alucard (never realizing his name is Dracula backwards) and Gabriel and how LoS isn't really official Cannon but is pretty interesting. So now I'm thinking I want to replay LoS1 after I beat MoF and then play LoS2 which I haven't got to yet. I also need to watch the 3rd season of the Netflix anime and likely will play several other titles like Simon's Quest, Belmont's Revenge, Dracula's Curse and then maybe the PS2 and remaining GBA/DS titles.... oh and Bloodlines and I might give Dracula X on SNES a go, even though I realize it's a watered down version of Rondo.

If you do play Simon's Quest, just use a guide. That game has some really cryptic crap.

I highly recommend spacing out all of the GBA/DS titles. They're good, but you'll probably get burnt out if you play them all too close together (like I did).

It felt great to play Rondo last night. I'm looking forward to working my way through the rest of the Castlevania games I haven't played, and also re-playing some of my favorites.

Scott, yeah I am not sure if I'll seek to beat the GBA/DS titles in close succession. I already beat Circle of the Moon and when I go to attempt more, I'll be emulating them as I don't even own a DS. I had started Simon's Quest on the NES classic and it did seem a bit odd. I might play Dracula's Curse first and wait on SQ a while.

@Frank - we've not held fast to deep rules about that here. If you beat Doom 64 on Switch you're welcome to credit that as an Nintendo 64 game or a Nintendo Switch title.
Personally I've beat at least two 360 titles on my X1 and I've kept them as 360 games. And I've emulated a number of older systems, beating them on my PC, but crediting them to their original systems.

I really love the idea of Simon's Quest, they just didn't execute it well. A Castlevania game where you roam the Transylvania countryside, going through swamps and cemeteries, visiting creepy towns and castles, could be really cool. Doubt we'll ever get it though, they're too stuck on the Metroidvania style.

@Antipop Just saw the credits roll for Rondo of Blood. I don't have, nor ever owned whatever platform it was available on - was that NEC TurboGrafx-CD or NEC Super Grafx or ??
I am looking to purchase the NEC TurboGrafx-16 mini once the price becomes reasonable (around $60 or so) but I actually want the NEC PC Engine version. So I'm not sure how you want to classify that for me, I'm game with whatever. It also brings up the question as to if someone gets the NEC TurboGrafx-16 mini, there are games from a few different platforms on that device.
In any case it gets me to my Triple Gold Star and 30 titles regardless.
I will play it again/more as I didn't find Maria so I played the whole game as Rictor and that was fun, but based on the title offering different paths and options and I took effectively none of those, I'd like to give it another go. Plus the save file shows me at like 63%, so there are more things to do, but I still consider it beat.

It's a PCE CD game and was Japan only until the PSP release.

Hopefully the Turbo mini gets more made for restocks. The demand seems to be there. I think the Rona situation caused issues.

Just beat #30: Sea of Memories for PS4

Since there's a deal to get EA Access for 1 month for $0.99, I thought it might be a good opportunity to play a few games I've been curious about without having to buy them. This was first up. Even if I don't end up playing anything else on EA Access (which is entirely possible since I'm playing The Last of Us 2 next), that was worth $0.99. Interesting art design (like a darker version of Journey) with an emphasis on overcoming mental illness. Trippy game but interesting. I'm still a little short of the platinum because I'm missing a few collectibles. The game displays how many of each thing you have whenever you get something, and there's chapter select, but there's no breakdown of what things you have by chapter, so I'm having to go through a walkthrough on YouTube checking off each collectible to see what I'm missing. It's pretty tedious.

I hate to say this about one of my all-time favorite single player games, but Final Fantasy Tactics has been a real slog with the "Kind Of" romhack. One of the boss fights literally took me over 90 minutes of playing chicken before he finally went down (and that was probably the tenth attempt, even after breaking to level up a bit more and learn a few more jobs), and all my go-to abilities and jobs have been messed with so they're not as reliable as they used to be.

At over 36 hours in, I just added Orlandeau to my party. In past playthroughs, this was a cause for celebration as the dude can damn near finish the game on his own. In the romhack, though, I'm skeptical. Most of his sword skills have been removed. I'm fearing how else the hackers might have messed with him.

To be continued...

It is! (edit: misread; iunno man! I always hit a certain point, I only got to Dark World twice for instance, and I just lost interest, but after clearing the SUPER EXCELLENT Link Between Worlds I had more patience and interest... but if I hadn't beaten LBW I would have surely gotten annoyed and given up at Ice Temple had I gotten that far) I'm actually re-playing it on iPad right now, just finished up the aforementioned Ice Temple (which was blessedly easier this time around, went from an hour and fifteen minutes to like, 20). Also gonna play it on Switch at some point either next or this year, I'll go for all hearts on that run. For now, Ether Medallion and then Mire Swamp!

Rusted the Wind Fish from his slumber in Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for the Nintendo Switch a little earlier today. Although it was a great time, I think I still prefer the original/DX version; there is a timelessness about that one that just cannot be topped. Still, the remake is what finally convinced me to pull the trigg on Nintendo's latest console, so that's gotta count for something. Onto the next one!

i may have my gba completion done sometime this week, it depends as i plan to start working on a lets play series for TMS#FE Encore tomorrow, but im a few chapters from the end of Fire Emblem 6 so i might press on and finish tomorrow. this is probably the sloggiest game in the series that ive played, i love FE but i am ready for this be over. I can see why alot of people rate this one lower in the series overall and I can see why they made the changes they did once they broke the series to the rest of the world with FE7. then you can later see why they change it again at 13(awakening). its interesting to look back over the series now 30 year history and see the evolution and changes.

ive been getting into the ones that have never been released internationally through translation patches and watching them on yt and its a shame FE4 never got to come here, it would likely be revered among the snes best rpgs along with FF6 and CT. that game is amazing.

Beat and got the plat for Metagal on Vita. I want to note that this is the Playasia physical version, which has the slightly more difficult trophy list so you have to actually beat the game to get everything. I'm not that much into hard platform games a la Megaman, but I had some interesting moments with this one.

This is also an entry for that Megaman icon lol I need to find another one.

I may have to give that one a try; I love discovering retro games that were never released in the US that are exemplary.

I'll take your word for it on the MM icon-front. Also, you're back in the top games completed list! Take a picture cause it'll last longer, haha.

ya if you play FE4 make sure you're getting the most recent Project Naga translation version, its much superior to previous ones. FE5, which takes place kind of the middle of FE4 never came here either(FE7 was the first one in the west), has a translation project called Little Manster thats very good but FE5 is considerd one of the lower games in the series and personally id say its not as good as 4. the famicom ones you're better off just playing shadow dragon and new mystery of the emblem for DS, and FE Echoes shadows of valentia (remake of FE2) for 3ds as those are remakes of those, well shadow dragon is a remake of fe3 book 1, which is itself a redo of fe1. NMotE is FE3 book 2, the conituniation of Marth's adventures. NMotE was also japanese only after shadow dragon almost killed the franchise but there are translated roms out there for it too.

the TL;DR is never released in the US fire emblems though is FE4 is the gem, though its still not for everyone, today it would feel a little slow, but with emu you can do speed ups. and FE6 is kinda relavant to US fans as FE7 is a prequel to it, the game that was just called fire emblem here, but its also one of the lower ranking games in the series, id say its my least favorite FE overall ive played so far, its tedious and im having to force myself to play these last couple of chapters at this point. at some point kaga must have thought, what if your lord was one of your worst units and what if almost all the player units were garbage? lets try that, and so they did.

Well it seems that I've finished Apple Knight on Android - At least up to the latest level. It has 4 worlds with 10 levels each with the 10th level being a boss fight and it seems with the latest update from just ~12 days ago they've only got to world 4, level 8. I've also collected all of the chests and 2 secrets from each of the first 20 levels and am only missing like 8 secrets from 6 levels and 1 level (the latest) where I didn't get all of the chests.

So I'm calling it completed. If the 9th and 10th levels drop eventually I'll go back and beat them and try to get full secrets/chests. But I don't see any reason to not consider it completed. It's wasn't too bad, but I had to use a controller as I needed to do my best to click the right buttons. It has a boat load of ads, but most you can kill after 3-7 seconds. They did offer you the option to watch an ad in the level to gain some in-game currency and health and ammo. There are upgrades you need to buy with that currency so watching some ads was helpful, or replaying levels going for all of the chests/secrets. Overall, for a mobile game it wasn't too bad.

That's 31 titles down... I've been playing several lately, so finally completing one feels good, but I did think I'd have at least 2 more levels to go.

I did for now. Needed a break lol plus I wanna get to Last of Us 2 and heard the post game in DQ11 takes a bit of grinding to do everything and I kinda don't wanna get into the grind mode right now.
