Mine is a bit of a weird one. I have Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero on 4 different platforms (Vita, Switch, Xbox One and a PS5 copy on preorder) despite having not played more than a couple hours on it total. I also got Enter the Gungeon on the Switch, PS4 and XB1 because I love that game and will use any reason to play it again.

What are you're top double or triple-dips?

Hyrule Warriors on Wii U, 3DS and Switch...And I still have maybe 10 hours total in that game. (I bought the Definitive Edition on Switch twice, in fact.) I finished the sequel, Age of Calamity, though. I owned Final Fantasy VI on SNES, PS1 and GBA, though my parents bought me the SNES version for Christmas '95.

Link's Awakening might be the main one. I've owned the original GB version 3 times, always CIB. I never owned the GBC version on cartridge, but bought it digitally on 3DS. And I have the Switch remake, of course. And now I have the Zelda Game & Watch preordered, which includes the original...again, lol.

The game I own the most times over is Kirby's Dream Land 3 on Super Famicom, Wii VC, Kirby's Dream Collection, and Nintendo Switch Online. I started with the VC version, had a friend buy me a physical copy, and the other two just happened to be included with things I was already buying. Still love that game, though!

Other contenders are Super Mario Sunshine (own two disks, got the SM3DA collection, and previously owned another copy that was sold against my will); Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (own two carts from different regions and a Wii VC version); Kirby Super Star (Wii VC, Kirby's Dream Collection, Switch Online); Kirby's Dream Land 2 (two carts of varying functionality and Kirby's Dream Collection); Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter (own two copies with hopes of trading one, and one is inside Drawn to Life Collection); and all three of Rareware's Donkey Kong Country games (SNES/SFC, Wii VC, and Switch Online).

It's cool that they chose to include the original in the G&W release. I've already got the GBC one, have the G&W preordered, and I expect to get the remake someday. It's a neat way to acquire all the versions.

This, haha!

But in all seriousness, I bought Chrono Trigger on SNES, PS1 and Android and glad I did every time. Then there is Zelda OOT on N64, GC, Wii and 3DS. And finally Halo on every Xbox.

I think Balloon Fight and Kirby's Adventure are the games I have the most times over.

Balloon Fight was a launch title for the Virtual Console, a sort of digital thank-you card to Mr. Iwata (or perhaps from him with the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program). I have it on Famicom, GBA, GBA e-Reader, 3DS, Wii U, and through Switch Online. There's also the Balloon Trip Breeze game in Nintendo Land, the Iwata Edition mod, and Tingle's Balloon Fight.

Kirby's Adventure is just fun, a great example of what the NES could do in the hands of people who loved it and knew it inside and out. HAL Laboratory is my favorite developer, mostly because they could make that little 6502 sing. I have Kirby's Adventure on NES, Famicom, Wii (on Kirby's Dream Collection), Wii Virtual Console, 3DS, and through Switch Online.

Mostly games I gave up on, sold, and then decided to try again, or games I finished, sold, and wanted to get again for someone else to play. Also a lot of things I only got again because of compilations (e.g., Sega Smash Packs 1 & 2; I can't be bothered to look up every game that was in those)

PC:
Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis - because my first disc broke. Then I got it a third time on GOG.
Jagged Alliance 2 - first the original, then Gold, then Wildfire
Deus Ex - Disc, GOG
Freedom Force - Disc, Steam (I was just playing it like 15 minutes ago, weird!)

N64: I wasn't able to and then changed my mind, but I tried to buy WCW vs. nWo Revenge a 2nd time.

GB/GBA:
Golden Sun

GameCube:
Enter the Matrix
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (bought again as a gift 5-6 years ago, but I'm currently borrowing it so I think it counts)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4

Multiple platforms (some of these are because my PS3 broke. Twice):
Alan Wake - X360, Steam
Assassin's Creed - PS3, PC
Bionic Commando Rearmed - PS3, Steam
BioShock - PS3, Humble Bundle
BioShock Infinite - PS3, Humble Bundle
Brutal Legend - PS3, Steam
Bubble Bobble - Apple II, NES Classic Mini
Chrono Cross - PSX, PS1Classic
Dr. Mario - GB, NES Classic Mini
Final Fantasy Tactics - PSX, PSP
Grand Theft Auto - GBC, PC
Legend of Zelda - GC, NES Classic Mini
Zelda II - GBA, GC, NES Classic Mini
Legend of Zelda; Ocarina of Time - N64, GC
Max Payne 2 - PC, Steam
Max Payne 3 - PS3, Steam
Mega Man 1-6 - PS2, PS4
Metal Gear Solid 2 - PC, PS3, Vita
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence - PS2, Vita
Metroid Prime - GC, Wii
Shining Force - DC, Steam
Sonic Adventure - Dreamcast, GameCube
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - PC, Android
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles - PC, GameCube
Super Mario Bros. - SNES, WiiVC, NES Classic Mini
Super Mario Bros. 2 - SNES, NES Classic Mini
Super Mario Bros. 3 - SNES, GBA, WiiVC, NES, NES Classic Mini
Tomb Raider (2013) - PS3, Steam
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2 - Dreamcast x 2, PS4
Typoman - PS4, Steam. My wife bought one of these not realizing we already had it.
Uncharted 1 & 2 - PS3, PS4

I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Also there are some I've bought multiple copies of (not at the same time) with the intention of selling/trading some, but I don't think that fits the spirit of this topic.

I've had SotN on PS1, Saturn, PSP and 360. Actually, still have a PS1 copy lying around.

I can't think of too many others beyond a double dip.

It's not really the exact point of the thread but there are some games where I've went through a bunch of copies on the same system. Typically because I would sell them when done and rebuy later but in some instances it was going through 5+ copies before ending up with a really nice one.

I'll buy DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D pretty much anytime they get re-re-re-re-re-released.

There are other games (a couple of Wii U re-releases on Switch like Mario Kart 8 and SM3D World) and a few times I've bought indie games in the Switch eShop after totally forgetting that I already owned them on Steam or PS4 previously.

I keep buying Nier Automata and never finishing it.

I keep buying Final Fantasy VII and haven't played it since maybe 2005???

Like @Tiredman ever Genesis Collection and then realize old games aren't very good.

Monster World IV and Monster Boy in Wonderland. I really like these games.

I keep buying Undertale and have only ever played maybe 10 minutes of it like 5 years ago.

I've bought Celeste on every platform. I actually play it and love it every time.

Man, those be fighting words about old games 😄 I prefer the rpgs, and save for the oldest rpg's, the genre ages well, unless its Parasite Eve. For me Shining Force 1 and 2 are my go to srpg's along with some Phantasy Star 4 for the heck of it. Sometimes get the urge to fire up parts 2 and 3 as well. I keep buying the collection every generation because I like only hooking up old consoles when I need to.

Ya it's weird. Like it's such a simple game with a simple concept, but it had multiple local versus modes that makes it so you can do like 4-8 local players and always stays fun. The levels are short and challenging and make me want to 3 star everything.

The "Bowhmoth" is a really really long ass level you can do single or co-op - my friends and I did it in like 25 to 30 minutes I think, it's hard as crap.

I dunno, it's just an amazing game all around, and can be had for pretty cheap

edit: Just looked at the eShop, it's only $3 right now. That's a STEAL for this game.

Nope, I bought it on Steam and then got the Special Edition and the forthcoming version with all the mods free.

The major source of double-dipping for me was the 360/PS3 generation before it became clear that all roads lead to Steam, and I learned patience.

I like DS as well, I just want to know if there's a reason Tetris Ultimate even exists when from what I've seen it appears to be pretty much identical to Tetris axis (also on 3ds) minus dancing miis, and cost $10 more MSRP (was really effectively double, since Tetris Axis was going for about $20 at that point).

I definitely prefer Ultimate over Axis. Axis seems to be more gimmicky, while Ultimate seems a bit more serious. I really like the challenges in Ultimate. It was good online, but no one is on there anymore.

Burnout Paradise is the one that sticks out to me. I bought - and beat - the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC ports of the game. The PlayStation 3 version was one of my first platinums. When the Remastered version came out this generation, I picked up and played through the Xbox One version as part of my 2020 Year of Replays, and I've been picking at the Switch version as well. If it's compatible with the Valve Deck, I have no qualms about buying it a sixth time.

The SoulCalibur series got me multiple times with their platform-specific characters. I started with SoulCalibur II on the GameCube because of Link, but ended up getting the PlayStation 2 version with Heihachi when it became a Greatest Hits release. I have an Xbox disc as well now, but I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet. Te same thing happened with SoulCalibur IV: I started with the PlayStation 3 version to play with Darth Vader and got the Xbox 360 version with Yoda when it got cheap. (The missing characters ended up being released as DLC, so that wasn't necessary.)

Tekken has always been my primary fighting game, so I've bought a lot of duplicates. Tekken 6 was bought and 100%'d on both PlayStation 3 (as a physical pre-order with a fight stick) and Xbox 360 (digitally, once it reached $20). I bought Tekken Tag Tournament 2 as my first Wii U title, as a Collector's Edition for PlayStation 3 (for the amazing soundtrack), and digitally for Xbox 360. I bought Tekken 7 at launch for PlayStation 4 but found an incredible deal on a Steam key, so I picked that up shortly after as well, though I've only spent a significant amount of time with the PS4 release.

I bought physical copies of both Rollcage and Rollcage: Stage II for PC first and then PlayStation. The PC version is the better experience, but the PlayStation version was easier to get running post-heyday.

I'm not even going to bother dissecting all the remasters, remakes, Virtual Console releases, and Steam ports I've picked up over the years. There are dozens of Steam games that I picked up dirt cheap just in the name of having a unified collection, even if I had the console versions. I was also really big into remasters for Xbox 360 and Xbox One until I got a hold of a decent set of retro hardware. Now, I'm more likely to play the original.

Yeah, maybe you're right. I should be more charitable to old games. Not all of them are bad and many are quite good, but there are just some things from the NES era, and before that, I refuse to accept design and gameplay-wise like I did when I was a kid. Obviously, people were still learning what works so it's fair to give them a break.

I've also not keen on the concept of having "lives" anymore. I hate going back to that.

I agree. Loved all those action games on nes, even TMNT, but can't stand them today. Don't like having to start from scratch after so many deaths. As far as rpg's go, their frustrating gimmick is insane grinding to make any progress. Destiny of an Emperor and Little Ninja Brothers are both guilty of that. Can't help but replay them every few years though, but never beat them.

Some of the early JRPGs are ROUGH in that regard for sure. I remember getting a ways into Cosmic Fantasy 2 but losing my save data and just never bothering to restart. That game would probably be 5 hours with the fat trimmed down.

Yeah, I found that one quite fun. I've recently bought the NES version. It should arrive in a few days.

I didn't remember Tetris Party getting a physical release. It was originally a WiiWare title with balance board support, right? I think I played it online a few times with you and m.

Yeah, I remember playing with you guys. I remember crushing m on it, but he would clean my clock on Dr. Mario. I hadn't realized that it gotten a physical release either until a couple months ago.
