I love the combat style in DQ I-IV. I like the freedom of movement and just basically having everything stop and go to a separate screen during battles but still be simple. Is there anything like that on Wii, 360, PS4, Switch, Vita, or XBOX One? I know it's kind of a specific request. I just haven't been able to find anything to really scratch that itch. I'm ok with digital titles or older games, as long as I can get them on one of these systems.

I'm looking for something as similar to DW as possible. I'm not a big fan of most RPG turn-based combat, but for some reason, I always loved this style. I like the freedom of movement in the game contrasted by the non-timed, simple, turn-based combat.

I actually did a little reading, and I guess the combat style is called first person turn-based? Apparently, it's really outdated and very specific to the DQ franchise, so maybe I'm SOL on this.

Have you tried Phantasy Star IV?

It's not first person but straight up feels like one and that's because the previous 3 games were first person.

So speaking of that, try any of the Phantasy star games 1-4.
1 was on master system and 2-4 on Genesis.
But the latter can be found on several newer consoles, like the ps3/360 Sega Genesis collection, ds I think had a collection of 2 and 3 and maybe even Wii.
And even tho the fourth one isn't first person, it feels just like the older games but they just threw in a person to try and update it some.
Highly recommend you to at least watch some gameplay of 2-4 at least. I bet 2 and 3 will be exactly what u want and maybe even 4

@SilverOwl

Yes! Thank you! I looked at gameplay for 3. That's exactly what I'm looking for. That type overal gameplay of combat is exactly what I want.

It also looks like Phantasy Star II is available on XBOX One BC, digitally, so I'll definitely add that to my list.

Really surprised to not see EarthBound mentioned here. It's basically a quirky 1980s/90s setting real world with supernatural sci fi stuff happening, skinned onto Dragon Quest/Warrior

Oh, and for the record - I second Phantasy Star IV and II. III is ok, but not great.

Vay on Sega CD is like this too, but I don't think the game is all that great. Kinda simple, probably pricey, not available anywhere else I don't think (would probably need to emulate it).

@Gredler You know, I've never actually played Earthbound. I really should though.

@Admiral Cool, thanks! I just downloaded it. I'd still prefer the console version, but at least I can try it out this way.

For more modern games, I actually enjoy South Park TFBW's turn-based battle system. It's kind of like Divinity: Original Sin, and other games I've tried, but it's a lot more simple. I'm not a fan of the QTE-style stuff though. I hate that crap.

Yes, the original turnbased. Also known as the JRPG. Every RPG was like this until devs started making evolving the combat system.

As far as the main consoles Earthbound on WiiU VC

Phantasy Star IV is on Xbox 360 and PS3.

If you have 3DS Etrian Odyssey although they can be balls hard.

I will. I added it to my wanted list. I didn't see it on PS4, so I just added the Vita version.

Nevermind, I saw it. I added the first one too. Thanks again for the recommendation.

Unfortunately, unless it's also on Vita, that wouldn't work for me, but thank you for the recommendation. I'll look into it.

You can download it from the PSN store for $9.99... Combat in that game doesn't remind me of DQ, though.

That's ok. I'd prefer DQ style, but I'm open to any RPGs with simple turn-based, non-tactical games. I'm just not a fan of complicated stuff or the ones where you have to pick squares to move and crap like that. I like free movement and then just simple, straight forward battle with no movement necessary (if that makes sense). I also don't want anything that's timed or includes weird combo stuff. I like to take my time and think out my moves but still have simple mechanics.

Ys books 1&2 originally on the Turbo Grafx 16 CD. It's been ported to almost everything but it a lot changes from system to system. Emulate the Turbo Grafx 16 CD version. It has overworld bump combat. You walk into an enemy and that's your 1 attack keep walking into them and watch your health. Also what your items are chang your stats. At least this game I know is very simple combat

Also a very dogin sound track and voice acting and story.

Don't worry because it's already on my W2P list.
