This looks like my kind of game, I'm going to pick it up once I know what I got for Christmas. Seems like it's a more focused, more arcadey blend of Zelda:BotW and Assassins Creed Odyssey gameplay.

It's pretty fun. Played for 3 hours or so. It eases you in and plays well. Similar to BotW in that you have a stamina bar for climbing etc, huge open world and many small puzzle / labyrinths. My only gripe is the voice acting is kinda silly / stereotypical etc. I plan on finishing it. It's quality.

I don't think the cartoon look takes away from the game. At least it's not as bad as fortnite. But I get where you are coming from.

This is in my "I'll get it when its cheaper" list. I've been trying not to buy more than a handful of games new each year. This year I did pretty well. And also I have a feeling this game just might end up on gamepass next summer.

I am thoroughly enjoying Immortals. It's got a good story so far (3 hours in) and there are a bunch of humorous moments that got a chuckle out of me. The combat is fun and the puzzles are good so far.

I plan to finish it.

It feels a lot like breath of the wild. There are moments where you have to climb high things like statues to get a good view and unlock a region (like assassins creed).

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's better than breath of the wild because it's not. It is very fun though.

Fenyx is to BotW what Kingdoms of Amalur is to Elder scrolls. It's an arcadey, well controlling more light hearted version. Definitely worth trying.

I called it my GotY in another thread. And it is, but that's coming from someone who mainly plays Switch these days. I have completed two of the larger vaults (the game's dungeons, basically). Still need to free Ares and the guy with the unpronounceable name in the Forgelands. I like the game a lot, but can't seem to stick with a single game these days. I've been playing Collection of Saga these past few days, but will definitely finish IFR eventually.

I've been surprised by some of the puzzles. Some of them are really well designed. I think I prefer the over world challenges to those in the vaults. The navigation challenges are basically the same as the timed Korok puzzles in BotW, but the arrow challenges are fun, and I like doing the marble grid puzzles as well. Not a fan of the Fresco challenges, though. Don't like sliding block puzzles like that, especially when you have to literally push them around.

Definitely a really fun game overall.

Just got it in the mail. Fired it up without the patch(es) and played a bit. It looks like a lot of the videos I've seen online. I think the VO's would be great for the graphics IF they didn't roll EVERY R. I Don't like the mouse cursor style menu navigation (this should not exist on consoles), and I'm guessing I'll be changing the button layout. Attack with R is just weird. Hopefully the patches fix some stuff, but in short order it's a really intriguing game. Lots of options, great lore to work from, controls pretty well. This could be a good one.

The rolling r is overboard, but you get used to it. The mouse cursor annoys the crap out of me and it seems to be happening a LOT lately. I wanted to change the button layout but I got used to it SUPER quickly.

I've really enjoyed it so far, about 9 hours in. It's a lot like BotW, but they diverted enough. It does many things better imo, but it definitely has an Ubisoft game feel... lacks polish/smoothness but completely playable even on Switch. That said there are many mechanics where you will say this was directly ripped from BotW. It's more BotW than "Zelda", but that's not a bad thing for this game. The cartoony graphics fit the story/ humor they went for. It's a comedy, not God of War. I wonder if they are trying to make this the comedic Assassin's Creed, or if they make it a (Greek) series if it succeeds.

I have read this same take many times regarding BoTW, but did anyone else not like BoTW but has really enjoyed this game? For whatever reason I just could not get into BoTW (I think I had an issue with the weapons system), but I am really liking Fenyx about 10 hours in so far. It's fun, it's quick, there's a ton of loot, the characters are likeable. Agreed--this is in no way God of War in terms of seriousness, but overall a real fun experience so far. In my opinion it is better then AC Valhalla (for Ubisoft's comparisons sake).

I didn't like the first few hours of BotW nearly as much as Fenyx, but when BotW starts to feel like Zelda it's pretty great.

I enjoyed BotW pretty much start to finish, but I can see how someone wouldn't care for BotW and like Fenyx Rising. Imo so far Fenyx has better combat, handles weapons better, the world is more full, and I may actually like it's version of shrines better (we'll see long run). Another thing I like better is the lore, ancient Greece has a lot going for it. Icarus's wings are a lot better than a random glider.

The thing BotW had going for it was exploration, the fact that not every hill, mountain, or river was filled to the brim with stuff, and to find out if something was there you had to get there. It felt rewarding when I found, solved or beat something. Running into a strong hold meant you had to assess the enemy, your current situation/weapons, what the reward might be, and what options you had to attack, then you had to execute.

They are both pretty great (so far), but as I said they are different enough to be different experiences. The parallels are obvious though. It almost seems like Fenyx was in the concept phase when BotW was released, the developers all played BotW for a couple weeks, then regrouped and brainstormed "new" ideas for their game.

Since we're playing the comparison game. I absolutely do not agree with the combat comments. Zelda's combat is fantastic. The fact that you can use the physics system to your advantage is incredible. Every encounter in BoTW is life threatening early on. Like KC said, you had to have a plan going in. You couldn't just hack and slash. In Immortals, I usually just sneak up on the biggest enemy to get the stealth bonus and then hack and slash my way to victory. I unlocked the hammer early on, so I just swing away until they are about to swing back, and then I hammer the sh*t out of them for some more free hits. I am almost never in danger of dying.

As for exploration, there were definitely times that BotW felt empty. I would have liked more when running for 30-60 seconds with no enemies. Immortals feels very full. I'm very early on in the game...still only on the first god (I guess the second "area" of the game), but it seems like there is something every where I look. That is cool. I like the idea that I am constantly improving. Everything has a reward. On the other hand, like KC said, BotW's exploration felt more rewarding because you actually had to look for stuff.

I am really liking Immortals, like I figured I would, but BotW is one of the greatest games of all time. Immortals is fun and really well done, but it's no BotW.

BotW has a sense of genuine adventure that separates it from other games. But there were quite a few times where I didn't encounter anyone or anything interesting for what felt like ages. And all I was trying to do was find something to do besides run around.

As far as points of interest and engagement go, the best open-world I've played is prob Tsushima. It's a constant drip of coming across new things and exploration, and it doesn't fell as meaningless as a lot of Ubisoft stuff.

So, nobody is even talking about this game anymore? Are and of you still playing it? I've been playing a lot, and I still haven't even scratched the surface. I've only unlocked Valley as Wars Den. I've been taking my time and finding all of the chests/collectibles.

A couple of frustrations are the puzzles and the combat. The puzzles can take a long time to solve. To be clear, they're not hard. They're just time consuming. Go find 7 blue balls for this challenge. Roll this boulder up a ramp. Etc.

The combat is also frustrating. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but the enemies keep getting stronger and can take much more hits. Meanwhile, my character has barely gotten and stronger. The new swords aren't stronger. They just give different perks. I love hitting an enemy 20 times to barely remove half his health only to be hit once and lose 90% of my health. I can't help but think I'm doing something wrong.

I'm not deep into it yet, but I'm playing Immortals now too. Fun so far. I've mostly been exploring. I killed some legendary bird creature last night and got some new wings, but they don't seem to do anything different from the old ones. As far as combat goes, three things have helped me a lot so far: 1) upgrading the bow and using it liberally; 2) getting the skill for 5x dodge and using it liberally as well; and 3) running and then coming back (as, for a lot of enemies, if you don't go too far, the damage you did remains). Also, the legendary bird creature I killed was way stronger than me, but I found a rock I could stand behind that was tall enough for me to shoot Apollo's arrows over but not tall enough for him to hit me with fire, so I just stood there and sniped him until he was dead.

I haven't had too much trouble with combat. I've been using the sword that does 11% extra damage. I also have an undead version of the bird that refills one health chunk every time he hits with the fireball attack. (I think you buy this with the Charon coins. Don't remember where I got the bird.) It hits four times, so that refills four health chunks every time I use it. I completed all the wraith lairs a couple of days ago. I still need to finish some main quests, but I've just been juggling several games.

I'm using the 11% extra damage sword, and I'm using Phospor's stamina chunk skill. I also have some armor item that gives me a health chunk for every kill. I've upgraded everything I can. I use my sword a lot. Maybe that's part of my problem. I think the bow/arrow is practically useless in combat unless I'm trying to finish off a harpy.

The bird skin I was referring to is called Tarnished Phosphor. You get it after fighting Cerebus, which is a story fight. I also use one of the axe abilities a lot, where it creates a shockwave on the ground that damages all nearby enemies.

I think I'm somewhere around the middle of the game. It's pretty fun so far now that I've gotten some decent upgrades. I actually like the dialogue, as I took 5 years of Latin back in the day, and I'm enjoying all the references to epic poetry and mythology. The humor is a bit hit and miss, but it's grown on me. In general, this is a game that has grown on me. I wasn't really into the art style at first, but I'm appreciating it more now. I'm not a fan of puzzles, but at least many of the puzzles in this have good rewards attached to them (armor, weapons, etc.). I like the legendary beast fights.

You need to play Horizon Zero Dawn right now. You know me and how much I love Zelda. I would put Horizon and BOTW as a tie for the best game of the generation (and that's saying a lot because of all the great games I played this gen). Horizon definitely has BOTW beat in a few areas.

Went back to Fenyx today. Unlocked the the remaining two of the first 4 fast travel statues and "completed" the Aphrodite quest. I was a bit confused right before the fight thinking I might lose my progress in the vault, and accidentally triggered the "difficult boss fight". I was worried I screwed myself out of about an hour in that vault (to my last save) as I haven't powered anything up really. After a quick defeat I was locked in that fight. Second go round I did better, knocking off about 1/3 of the health. Third attempt using potions it was pretty easy.

I'm really liking this game, but it's oddly easy to put down. I'm having fun while playing, there's plenty to explore and do. Can't quite put my finger on why.

Any recommended order of the gods in terms of useful abilities?

I started with Aphrodite and then went to Wars Den (Ares), and then Athena. I'm just getting to the Forgelands now. I think it would've been better to do Athena before gong to Wars Den. I tink the enemies were a bit too tough that early in the game. Her blessings are better suited to people who play with the bow and arrow more.
