I love Kirby's Adventure!
It's a simple game to get into, but takes time to master. That final boss fight is still tough for me regardless of how many times I've played. It's also the culmination of 10 years of HAL Laboratory getting to know the NES, produced under the watchful, smiling, bespectacled eyes of Satoru Iwata, who I can't say enough good things about.

I didn't find it hard to master at all. I beat the entire game in one sitting in around 2-3 hours without dying once. It was a super easy game.
Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4) - 7.5/10 - Really well done but holy cow is the story chatty. I had to give up reading after a few hours as it didn't hold my interest in the least, and I skipped through quite a bit. It seemed a good story, but it's not engaging how it plays out.
I also had great issues with difficulty. Even knowing how to defeat certain machines, with the right weapons and mods, it seemed to take 5-10 minutes to defeat just one of the moderate ones. Ok, cool, but the only way to expedite seemed to be with doing side missions to level up, which made me do more damage. Which meant more rambling to skip through.
By the end of the game I may have been on the "traveller" setting which is easier than easy. I can't recall but was constantly frustrated with deaths and had to notch down more and more. Then the final battle stuff went by in a whiff. So it was either too hard or too easy for me the entire time.
Great game, and AMAZING for a new IP. Just far from flawless.
Marvel VS Capcom Infinite
I just finished the story. I'm still unsure who this game was intended for but it was cool to see the mosh up of heroes from both sides interact with one another. I just wish the X-men were in it, but with the story set up revolving around the infinity stones and Ultron, I'm not sure how they would fit in. Except for Wolverine. There's always room for some Berserker Barrage!

I had the exact opposite experience. Loved every minute of the story and found the challenge perfect (maybe a bit easy at times). But I'm a bit of a completionist (got the platinum) so maybe doing all those side quests helped me level up enough that things became easier. Did you get the special armor late in the game? Makes things even simpler. By the end of the game I was just demolishing most machines without worrying about any strategy; just running up to them and starting to swing away. Stayed on normal difficulty.

Cuphead is truly a wonder. I just got to world 2 myself and what a harrowing journey it was to get there. I think I am up to 81 deaths already. The art style and music alone is worth the low price of admission.
The game really doesn't get hard until the last few guys in world 2 (the dragon and circus levels were pretty difficult), and world 3 is where things got REALLY difficult. I think I was at 77 deaths through world 2, so between world 3 and the Hell, I died 300 times. I think the Bee boss was responsible for about 100 alone. The boss right before the Devil was a nasty, nasty test of patience. I finally ended up beating it with 5/6 health, which meant I got hit only once (this will make more sense when you see how that level is laid out). I liked how each boss felt almost like an entire level in of itself. I ran through, got an "S" rank this morning, and now I'm up to 760/1000 achievements. I probably can't beat the whole game on expert though, I can't even beat those two frogs in world 1 after 20 failed attempts.
Haven't had much gaming time this year until the last month or so. I've beaten several games.

Danganronpa V3 (Vita) - That ending was...something. I liked it.
Wow, someone doesn't like the fact that we're enjoying Cuphead.......
Wow. Can one of us take this man's job? He clearly is in the wrong profession.
Actually, while he writes about the videogame industry by and large, he doesn't really have much time to sit down and play them. And he's got a history of ignoring/making fun of platformers. He wasn't even supposed to be playing that game for the site, but he was the only person in the area, and instead of throwing out the footage like he wanted/expected, the site thought it was funny enough to post as a gag.
But this is the Internet, so obviously context and intent were lost and he became a game reviewer who couldn't read on-screen instructions or perform simple tasks and was publicly eviscerated. So while yes, he should have and could have simply read the text and figured it out, it'd be like being seriously upset that someone who writes about the medicine field doesn't know how to fulfill a prescription. His game of choice on his offtime was probably more along the "press buttons in between cutscenes" type, whereas Platformers are something a bit more arcane. He was expecting that he needed to double-jump and was doing it wrong when he was trying to teach himself, air-dashing is kind of a weird thing to transition to and not something I would have assumed was an option immediately (if it weren't on the screen).
Alternatively, he knew exactly what he was doing and he's good at getting clicks.
Well, its his fault for not reading the instructions. Dude was stuck for 26 minutes. If you press jump while in mid-air the first time and nothing happens then nothing will probably happen the next 30 times you try.
Anyhow, I went thru and "A" ranked all the bosses in Cuphead this morning. None of the stages were too bad but that last boss took me over an hour and I probably died at least 50 times. Hes such a bastard. I'm now at 900/1000 achievements and the final 100 is for beating the game on expert, which right now only 0.10% of people who've played the game have been able to do I may give it a shot at a late date but right now I have too many games waiting to be played to put that kind of time and energy into it.
I mean, it took me about 35 tries to beat that damn blue blob thing and that was one of first bosses so I guess I can't fault him too much.
Anyone on this site who was stuck on the 1st run & gun stage also probably hasn't been a game journalist for 21 years who get paid to play games for a living

Assassin's Creed III
I know this game is the black sheep of the series, but I really enjoyed it. The writing was well done, and, as always, the voice work. People complain about Connor being naive and/or boring, but I think that plays to his character. I thought they handled that time in US history really well, but it still boroughs into you how poorly Native Americans and African-Americans were (and in some cases still are) treated. I didn't come across any major glitches, and the other minor technical gameplay issues were fixed in Black Flag, so I won't go into them. The homestead was a cool idea in creating community for people otherwise without a place, and in that respect I think it fits the narrative really well, but on the other hand, I feel Connor, being a Native, would not want more settlements springing up if it could be helped.
My main problem comes in the way optional objectives were handled. Yes, some of the main missions were not the strongest in the series and at times they didn't explain what to do or where to go very well, but some of the optional objectives made you feel like the game was actively working against you. For example: during non-mission play, the QTEs to take down animals like wolves are easy to execute. But during one of the later side missions, an optional objective is to take out three wolves without taking more than a certain amount of damage, but I failed the QTEs every time despite pressing the correct button in time. Others gave no way of knowing how to complete them or didn't feel like they were properly tested. Plus, the objectives, main or optional, don't stay on your HUD, so you're flying blind. Minor design gripes of a few main missions aside, the later Desmond portions were either ridiculously needless (his father and the Abstergo HQ) or severly lacking in telling the player where to go.
I didn't 100% this AC game like most in the past, mainly because of the Club accomplishments and the hunting. Also, a first for me with an AC game, I seemed to always be woefully underfunded, despite finding all the treasure (I bought one gun upgrade and all but the final Attila upgrade, and have no money for anything else). With ACIII behind me, I'll let a little time pass before I move to Rogue. Still, I would recommend ACIII despite its shortcomings.
AC3 was always special to me. Loved the story and combat. Especially one of the last scenes where Connor is speaking to the native American and he gives an eerie foreshadowing of the America to come. It's a very underrated game IMO.
Resident Evil 7
It's far from perfect, but it's an intense and very fulfilling ride which is something I haven't been able to say about a mainline RE game since RE4. The story keeps you guessing and the audiovisual presentation keeps you on edge every step of the way. After RE6, i felt the series had reached the point of no return, but Capcom has managed to learn from contemporary games like Outlast and PT and has managed to create something that feels very much like a Resident Evil game despite the new cast, new locations, and the first person perspective. I can't wait to dive into the DLC to see how it all supplements and expands on the story.
I went in expecting one thing and came out of the experience impressed and proud of what Capcom has accomplished here. This is a game that is worthy of the Resident Evil name.
Bioshock Infinite Remastered -
- it may be just me but the remaster of Infinite looked far better than Bioshock 1 or 2. With that being said, this is my favorite Bioshock game to date. The story alone was just a completely delightful mind rape to date. I loved the DLC Burial at Sea also. A city in the clouds, rail shooting on a roller coaster like monorail, top notch voice acting and exploration/customization make me willing to return to this game any day of the week. Simply superb!
Had to be. It looked almost too polished for an almost 5 year old game.

No PS4 or Switch, lifetime Xbox One console exclusivity as confirmed directly from the two brothers. I believe MS helped fund the game so it isn't going anywhere else. That shouldn't stop anyone from playing this game though, whether its on the PC or X1 anyone whos a gamer needs to play it.
Yeah, my friend is a PC gamer and doesn't have an XB1 and he played this on the PC. I'm not sure of the system requirements, though, but can't imagine you would need immaculate specs to run Cuphead. I know on XB1 the install size is a little over 11GB.
Eternal Darkness. 9.7/10 This game was phenomenal. It begs for a sequel or remake on Switch, but we'll probably never see it with the mess that is the rights. The sanity meter was one of the best ideas in gaming in my lifetime. It encourages the player to play on the "edge". Such a shame the IP will fester like Mantorok for all eternity. It doesn't sound like Dyack is capable of putting anything out anymore.
Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle. 9.4/10 This game was the reason I bought my Switch (earlier), and while it didn't disappoint it was still a pleasant surprise. For the first time I actually enjoyed (not tolerated) the rabbids, they actually added new personality to the (stale) Mushroom Kingdom. In a year of Zelda BotW and Mario Odyssey on Nintendo alone, Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a sleeper GotY contender.

They were working on a spiritual successor called Shadow of the Eternals and it was going to be on Wii U, but the creator got caught with child porn and the project was squashed. But back in 2015 there was rumors that it was still coming out but it never did.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 8/10
So I have been working on this for a while, as I got the Trilogy on my 2DS when it was on sale a while back. I put it down for a while, but picked it back up and beat the final case on the first game over the last couple days.
I had trouble giving it the score I did, because I was really conflicted. On the one hand, the stories are excellent, the in-trial gameplay is a ton of fun, and it is challenging but rewarding. However, cases 4 and 5 are SO FRICKING LONG. I also wasn't a big fan of the out-of-trial gameplay, as a big part of it felt wasteful. There were a few suspenseful/cool moments out of trial, but I didn't really need to pay attention to a good chunk of the out-of-trial story stuff, and it felt boring and unnecessary. Overall, I did enjoy it. I will get into the rest at some point, but right now I am really feeling like getting Samus Returns.
I ignored my 2DS for a while, but having such a portable system with an amazing library really does feel good. (I have a Switch, but I don't usually take it out of the house.) It really makes me want to upgrade to the 2DS XL for those bigger screens and SNES games.

For sure. I haven't been this surprised by a game in quite some time. I was 50/50 on it before it came out and ended up giving it a 9.25/10 when I was finished.

The game was Denis Dyack's, but without Nintendo's direction it would have been mediocre at best. They admitted as much back in the day.
Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles
Neat little game that could have been something truly special. Imagine a cross between Breath of the Wild and Animal Crossing with a little Harvest Moon added to the mix. Sound pretty awesome, no? Unfortunately, it borrows a lot of ideas from other games but these ideas don't mesh as well as they could have.
I don't regret the 8 odd hours I spent with it, though. The open world is beautiful and you don't have to worry about health, enemies, or anything, really. You can progress through the story or ignore it all and build and maintain as many as six farms, fish, trade with merchants, complete side quests, craft items etc for hours on end. It's a wonderfully chill world to just explore and enjoy at your own pace. At least it is for about 3-4 hours at which point it all becomes repetitive and you begin to wish it had a little more depth.
The biggest issues I had with the game are the fact that you can visit villages but there are no meaningful interactions with any of the villagers. None of the game's hooks are properly fleshed out; you are either just collecting a bunch of stuff or you are completing boring fetch quest after boring fetch quest. I can usually deal with this if the story is compelling, but the story is dull and forgettable. It feels like something that was thrown together so the devs could say the game has a story, and as someone who wanted to play through the story while sampling some of the Animal Crossing/Harvest Moon-inspired stuff on the side, I was kinda bummed when the credits finally rolled. It also features a poorly conceived fast travel system that I didn't even know existed for half the game. By the time I figured out that you have to complete specific quests to unlock each individual fast travel stone, i'd already uncovered 3/4 of the map. Insanely enough, you can't even teleport to each fast travel stone. You have to walk to the nearest stone and then fast travel to another stone close to your destination. I found it easier to just walk from one place to another and ignore the fast travel system altogether.
Overall, it isn't as good as it could have been, but it's still a unique and relaxing experience and well worth the $20 I spent on a physical copy at launch.

Mario and Luigi: Dream Team
- with the exception of the final boss and his quite annoying infinite healing ability, I can say I really enjoyed the unique innovative ideas this game presented that incorporated and gave Luigi his just dues while in the dream world. Nintendo still to this day has yet to fail to amaze me with its creativity.

I just started up Samus Returns today myself. Such a fun game. I love the counter ability. Very useful. I am counting the days until my Switch Odyssey bundle arrives. Cannot wait!!!
Metroid: Samus Returns
As some know from reading the 3DS Discussion thread, I hated the original Metroid II. I never got anywhere, everything looked the same and it frustrated me to no end. It's amazing what a useful map can do for a game. I really, really enjoyed exploring and playing this remake, and finished with 100% at around 12 and a half hours. The graphics are great, the 3D effect is nice, the sound is spot on to the original Metroid games, and the additions make logical sense. Of course the map is the shining addition. You can choose to go at it without using the pulse, but to avoid frustration, I'd suggest using it. Overall, this is great for any Metroid fan, but also those like me that couldn't play the original release.
Would've been nice then. But I do like Samus Returns. I understand why Nintendo shut AM2R down.
Let's get the good out of the way first: great graphics and display options on PC. I love the character designs (except maybe the end boss). Controls are tight, with the exception of when you want to fall off a ledge and hang from it instead. This can hurt you in the heat of combat. Gameplay definitely has a smooth movement to it, which is really nice.
The not-so-good mainly falls down to the level design. Oh man does everything/place look pretty much alike. I got excited when I reached The Black Market, with it's Eastern influence and all the colors, but as quickly as you get there you're dropped into the underground. It felt like portions of areas were pulled directly from other areas too. I think because of this the game seemed to take a long time. Yet when I looked at the in-game clock I had only been playing for a little over 4 hours! It didn't take much longer than that to finish either. I ended with almost 62% completion, and if I'm reading the final screen after the credits right, I can't go back and collect more? I have to start all over again? Yeah. That won't be happening.
I had always wanted to try this reboot, and it's definitely worth a go, because the short length helps stave off repetition of environments.
Moving from one area to the next is kind of a pain and so is the respawning enemies. It made tracking down all the collectables really frustrating. I think I'm at like 90-something % finished but never went to the airship part because, from what I was reading, that's the point of no return and they don't really warn you about it and I'm not doing a 2nd run to collect everything again because I missed a handful of secrets.
Just beat GTA V for the 2nd time, only now remastered on PS4. I love this game so much. I forgot how much I loved Trevor too. Can't wait for a GTA VI. I hope they bring it back to Vice City.
Yeah I wasted all my money with Franklin on cars but luckily Michael had enough cash to pay for heist set ups. Once you make it to I think it's the Poleto heist, you get like $400,000 for each character so your money troubles slowly subside
Yomawari: Night Alone
I've had this game since launched (and boy has the Vita price skyrocketed), but haven't gotten around to it. I figure it being mid-October and the sequel arriving this week, now was the best time. I've read how this game is scary, and given it's a slightly cartoonish 2D graphics/design from an isometric perspective, I didn't really believe it, but I was wrong. I wouldn't go as far to say it's scary (though because by their nature movies, shows and games are recorded fiction for entertainment purposes, they don't scare me as I'm always aware of that), 'Yomawari' is genuinely unnerving and incredibly tense.
I won't ruin the inciting incident, but basically you're an unnamed girl that goes out in her town at night to look for her missing sister. In that respect, the game is almost like 'Alan Wake'-lite. You have a flashlight, but not much else, and you must avoid freaky beings of all sorts to obtain your objective. The chapters are straightforward, and if you're following the game objectives, very linear, but the game is actually a small open world you're free to explore for more collectibles (there is a free roam mode post credits). Outside of a few cool things, like fixing a radio to listen to music in your house, I can't seem to find a use for most of the collectibles. I stuck to the main objectives then, and it only took me 2-3 hours to complete. So yeah, it's short, and a good amount of that time was redoing certain sequences.
And that's my only real complaint with 'Yomawari:' like 'The Fireflies Diary' before it, there are times where you're given so little time to react or do something because the girl moves so slow, it feels cheap. And also like 'The Fireflies Diary,' you will die. Most of my deaths came from first time encounters. Either from an enemy being directly around a corner you must take and your flashlight hasn't seen them yet, or enemies with incredible speed coming out of nowhere without warning or, my favorite, getting killed because an enemy was obscured by a tree or building due to the isometric view. You have a pulse meter as part of your stamina (which thankfully let's you run, but is used way too quickly) and the sound design is great in helping you know an enemy is nearby, but if a building is in the way of your view there's nothing you can do about it. And these all coming together against you in Chapter 6. I almost quit, but eventually I found the ever-so-tight track I needed to take in one particular section.
Overall, this is a great horror game that anyone with a Vita or PC should play. I'm really looking forward to the sequel come Tuesday.

It looks much better than the last gen version that's for sure. Upgraded and enhanced lighting and textures make it almost feel like a next gen game for when the remaster came out at the time in 2014
New Ghostbusters II (Famicom) - got the 1CC this afternoon, on a not particularly good run. Had one life left during the fight with Vigo and was gnashing.

With the Gold Edition coming out in early December, I'm sure you'll see new copies of the vanilla version for 15-20 dollars on Black Friday.
Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition
- Puzzles and challenges that even Link and Zelda would give a respectful nod too. Couple that with fast paced combat and cool upgrades and armor made this game truly impress me through and through. I was never able to get into the first game but I seriously can't wait for part 3 now. Bring on the Fury!
