I've wanted to catch up on the Pokemon games for a long time. After enjoying Let's Go recently, and wanting to play Sword/Shield soon, I think it's finally time. I have some reservations though. Let's Go really spoiled me with the various updates it made to modernize the game and get rid of little annoying things. For example, being able to access your Pokemon storage anywhere instead of only at a PC, TMs not being a one-time use, being able to surf/fly/etc without using up a move slot on a Pokemon. Were all of these things new to Let's Go? If not, at which gen were they introduced?

Another thing I'm debating is whether I want to play the original Ruby/Sapphire, or the remakes Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. I never played FireRed/LeafGreen, but if I remember correctly, they had Gen 2 and 3 Pokemon in addition to Gen 1, which I didn't care for. Did Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire also add a ton of Pokemon that weren't in the originals, or do they mostly have the same Pokemon with maybe a few additions? Out of curiosity, what about HeartGold/SoulSilver?

I'd also like to find good resources for each game where I can look up ahead of time to know what the good Pokemon in that game are so that I can keep an eye out for them. I'm not looking to play each gen extensively. I just want to power through them to experience the story, region, and new Pokemon, so I'd like to use mostly the best Pokemon for my only playthrough. Does anyone have any suggestions for this?

The quality of life stuff you're looking for is only going to be in the latest games. Most Pokemon games are very clearly descended from the gen 1 games with all the busywork and dialog boxes that come with it. Game Freak was not one to keep on modern game design. HeartGold/SoulSilver are often considered the best games, and they'll have lots of gen 1 Pokemon if those are your favorites. Black/White 2 are also considered the best, which are story follow ups to B/W. Otherwise play the "third" game in each series (Emerald, Platinum).

All the Pokemon games are mind numbingly easy. There's no point in trying to pick good Pokemon, just play with your favorites and you'll breeze through all of them. Gen 1 and HGSS are the hardest but even then you can cruise through nearly the entire game with a single OP Pokemon at the front of your party of 6. Karen already gave you this advice:

That's too bad. I hope they give more gens the "Let's Go" treatment soon, that game was great.

Right now I'm just planning to play through the originals of each gen, starting with Ruby/Sapphire. I may go back eventually and play the remakes, if I don't get completely burnt out on Pokemon before then.

Based on what I've read, I think I'll play both.

I wasn't planning to do this since I didn't really care for Yellow, but based on what I've read about Emerald it sounds much better, so I do think I'll play these afterall.

I know, I just can't help but go for the best when I play a game like this.

Look up competitive tiers if you really want the best Pokemon: https://www.smogon.com/bw/articles/bw_tiers

In the Uber tier there's obviously OP stuff like legendaries, but in the Overused tier there are more common powerful Pokemon. The tiers are based on well-balanced teams for the competitive play metagame though. Any Pokemon with one STAB move will roll NPC trainers.

(I haven't played gen 8 yet) You have to go to a PC in every gen, TMs started being multi-use in gen 4 or 5, they got rid of HMs in gen 7.

I also jumped back in with gen 3 about 2 years ago. I played the remakes, mostly because I already had a 3DS and didn't feel the need to go get an Advanced, I loved the game although I do think the modern 3d graphics spoiled me and that's part of why I didn't care for gen 4 and 5 so much.

I downloaded an app on my phone (android but its probably available on apple too) called PokeInfo. Its a pretty clean layout and gives you just about all the info you could want. Pokemon locations, item locations, how to evolve pokemon (level, items, trades, etc.) what pokemon the gym leaders and final four use, there's an EV calculator, just all kinds of great stuff

Give X and Y a try on 3DS. I was like you (dipping out after gen 2) but did play through and enjoy Y.

Is Pokémon still stupid easy? I bought X, didn't get too far because it felt like I could put it spam attack the whole time and not worry about dying.
