...are coming in mighty fine this time of year! Right now, it's falling on GR top 10 ranked 3DS games list at #8. Impressive. I absolutely cannot wait for this to arrive. Zero Mission was almost 15 years ago. It's been too damn long since I played a refreshing 2D Metroid game. Goodbye world, hello again Samus!

great reviews all around. Looks like Eurogames hates it though, but their score hasn't been generated by metacritic yet. I can't wait to get some play time, I should get it on Friday. It will be the first Metroid game I've bought on launch.

What did they say against it?

I didn't read the entire review, just the synopsis on Metacritic:

It all adds up to an underwhelming return. MercurySteam now has the curious distinction of being the one developer to have worked on both Metroid and Castlevania on the 3DS and fallen wide of the mark on both. This isn't quite the disappointment that was Mirrors of Fate, and there's a hard-edged gem to be found in what was always going to be a troubled exercise. Samus Returns is ultimately a noble remake that fixes so many of the original's problems, but it doesn't do so without introducing a handful of its own

There's always 1 or 2 haters. Honestly, I was worried because I was NOT a fan of Mirrors of Fate. They turned Castlevania into a very linear game, more like the first 4 games of the series. It made me worry that MercurySteam was now working on the other half of Metroidvania. I really hope it's not linear like Fusion or Other M.

Meh, there's always one bad apple in every bunch. I wouldn't let their review hinder my experience with it. I'm sure it's great.

Well, its a remake of Metroid 2, so its only going to be as linear as that game was.

https://howlongtobeat.com/ says Metroid II on GB takes about 5 hours to beat. Hopefully they added some new content to the 3DS version. The original sounds short.

Hmm.. I remember it taking me a lot longer, maybe it just felt like it. It's been over 15 years since I last played it.

I think I remember them saying that new content had been added but I don't know if that applied to content that lengthened the story or just slightly altered the gameplay a little bit to make it feel fresh and modern.
psgorio87

* 12-Sep(#12)
Yeah, regardless of the polish, I'm assuming it'll take longer than 5 hours to beat if they added some new content and also in tandem with figuring out how to get from point A to B and so on. Old school 2D Metroid games don't really tell you the way to go most of the time. They just put that boss icon on the map and let you figure out how to get their on your own. I just recently beat Super Metroid on VC and that took me a good 15+ hours to beat after figuring out what upgrades I needed to progress, etc. Also, I can't recall Metroid II on the GB too much either. It may have been shorter than the average Metroid due to it being on the original GB and only so much data could fit onto that cartridge. Ah well, we'll all find out in 3 days.

I'm hoping for the same, but that has only happened for me once. (Got BotW a day early)...My copy of Ys VIII also shipped today (pre-ordered it late). Kind of excited that I might be getting these on the same day. If Ys gets here first, I'll wait to open it. Metroid cannot wait!

Yeah I had no real issues with Mirror of Fate as well. It was just linear for a Castlevania game but I didn't mind that since the story was cool

I don't mind Linear from time to time. If all Castlevanias were linear I wouldnt like it. Sometimes just getting a good action platformers is good too.

Eurogamer CONSISTENTLY gives the lowest reviews on Metacritic. Check out other games, even highly reviewed ones, and you'll almost always see Eurogamer at the bottom. I'm not sure if they are really that critical, or if the score converter messes with their review score, or both.... But it's fair to dismiss their reviews when looking at Metacritic.

I watched a video yesterday (I think it was NintendoLife, but I'm not sure) where the guy claims that he stopped playing at exactly 4 hours to see his progress, and he was up to 25%. It's definitely longer than Metroid 2, which was limited by ancient hardware. Remember, the gameboy was less powerful than the NES.

lol

It was 8-bit raspberry

Many forums actually do a technical or spec comparison - and the Gameboy is widely considered to be the more powerful of the two.

CPU:
GB 4.19mhz
NES 1.79mhz

RAM
GB: 8kb
NES: 2kb

I think games looked better on the NES though, plus it has color which really set them both apart.

Holy nuts, I think I've been all over Nintendo to kill the 3ds selfishly. Played for an hour and my hands/ wrists are starting to cramp up. Frequent use of both shoulder buttons are rough. Have had zero issues on Switch.

This game is pretty sweet, a lot of good improvements to gameplay even over Super Metroid. The Metroid fights are decent. The graphics are great for 3DS, andthe 3d is nice. I run about half on 3d until I get it out of position too much, then I just shut it off.

I still wish this was a Switch game instead. Metroid screams a bigger screen. Hopefully they port it, or better yet include it as a bonus with MP4.

I ordered the Amiibos and CE on Best Buy way back when they were first announced. While I was out of town because of Irma, they had sent me an email saying they were having trouble processing the payment for the game, and then they just cancelled that order altogether! The Amiibos were on a separate order and they had no problem, even though they used the same payment method. Danggit Best Buy! I really want to play this game, so now I'm in the dilemma of do I just settle with the regular version, or do I hold out and try to find the CE?

I stopped at the closest Gamestop after work Friday and kinda glanced around, saw Rogue Legacy CE for $5 and Sonic Colors for $10, asked if they had any Metroid amiibos left, she said "We've got... one. Sec." Went into the back, had a heated discussion with one of the employees (looks like they had it in the back to take home or something) and came out with it saying "Take it or leave it, last one we're getting." So I took it. raspberry

Just don't have a system to play it on currently. Now, just need to wait until later next week for one to come in on a trade I just pended today.

I'm also in Area 4...I've played for 10 hours, according to the activity log, and have taken down 17 Metroids out of 40. So it's a decent length on first playthrough. Maybe I just suck, but I've also died about 30 times. (Mostly from going into Gamma Metroid fights unprepared.) I definitely need to hunt down the amiibo for Fusion mode.

Is 17 all? I swear I've taken down more having now just gotten to 4.

I've died a decent amount, but there are a lot of cheap hits as I mentioned. Additionally it's hard to run through the game without either getting hit or killing EVERYTHING. There are alot of enemies that are annoying to kill and hard/impossible to avoid. Really miss not having the speed boost early, not that it would help much with the level design in MSR.

I find to travel "quickly" you can avoid some of the more annoying enemies easier by traveling in ball form.

I have 16 left after beating one in area 4. I love the alpha fights as they don't run and hide unlike the crawlers (not sure of name, Beta?). None of them are really a challenge once you get their timing down. And on the off chance you didn't know, you can shoot the little glowing balls they drop for energy.

I haven't gotten a chance to play this game much, I only killed my first Metroid last night but its been fun so far. After playing this game I'll have to play Super Metroid since I've never played that one and I can see which is the better of the two from the perspective of someone whos never played SM before.

I just picked up the Amiibo from Walmart. They're really nice, and I'm surprised how big the Metroid one is.
