Well, crap. This is GREAT news, sucks for those of us that already overpaid on both. Oh well, ya live and learn. Hopefully they release plenty of stock and just keep making them at this point to put an end to this madness.

https://kotaku.com/nintendo-bringing-back-the-nes-...

If you missed one of the scant chances to nab yourself an NES Classic Edition, there's good news. If, on the other hand, you paid a higher price for one on the secondary market... apologies in advance.

Nintendo plans to bring the previously discontinued NES Classic back to stores in the summer of 2018. It's not yet clear what kind of quantity we're talking about here, but there's more to this announcement. It might even (dare I say it?) get your hopes up.

"I would strongly urge you not to over-bid on an SNES Classic on any of the auction sites," he said. "You shouldn't [have to] pay more than $79.99."

I love this news. And yet, it's irritating a little.

I still don't understand why Nintendo stopped the NES in the first place though - just to raise consumer demand so they can make them again a year later?!??

Or, did they simply decide to redo the NES next year because of the backlash they are receiving??

Either way, I'm buying both ASAP at retail price. Hopefully Nintendo isn't lying, and will have enough for all of the people who want them. I won't hold my breath.

I agree with you Admiral. The whole situation is icky.

I have a SNES preordered already, but I won't be getting the NES for myself. I'll get one for my sister, if possible, for her birthday next year.

That's a good way to put it - "icky".

It APPEARS they are trying to make consumers happy for their "error", but on the backend of it - I can't help but think it was all intentional.

Appears is also a great word choice. We will see what happens. They will have to make a lot to meet demand because even with this news there will be people buying 20+ in hopes of scalping them.

Nintendo said they had to focus on Switch production, so I'm guessing maybe by then they'll have enough Switches to catch up. Supposedly, their main goal was making sure they had enough Switches and SNES Classics for the holidays. After that, they can refocus on NES Classic production. That makes sense to me.

It's contract manufacturing, not cooking. If you plan on hosting 5 people and 30 show up, you either run to the store or turn them away. Well in manufacturing contracts are put in place months, sometimes years in advance. It's not a quick/cheap change.

They under estimated the initial demand, and this likely isn't a big profit maker so why burn costly resources reducing that margin even more when you have the extremely successful Switch (their future) just starting out?

I'm surprised they are bringing it back at all, shows yet again they actually do care about their fans.

I'm very surprised they're actually making more instead of just keeping it "limited" to 2 million and making people think of Nintendo as somehow having exclusive in demand stuff. They're also announcing it ahead of SNES mini to hopefully dampen enthusiasm for scalping those, so it's good news all around.

If that's the case (which I have heard about before), then it does make sense. But people are putting alot of faith in Nintendo being genuine with this reason wink

These are all fair points. But even in defending Nintendo, you all have to admit that this was a HUGE miscalculation - probably one in which someone's JOB was to gauge demand for a system like that! Someone crap the bed big time.

I'm also surprised they are bringing it back at all!! BUT - to say "they actually do care about their fans" is turning a blind eye to alot of what Nintendo does!

Also agree. I've been super critical of Nintendo, all the while supporting the Wii, Wii U, 3DS, and the eShop quite a bit (didn't buy a Switch yet since there are not many games I want yet). I am not counting on them to deliver - but I'm rooting for them hardcore.

On demand, yes, misjudged significantly. To be fair, so did I, a lot of GTZ'ers and folks everywhere. I thought they'd be sitting on store shelves in mid-late December.

A small mom/pop game store got 6 classics in release day, they only had two pre-orders. They didn't sell right away, the owner saw them selling on eBay for about double so he sold them online. A couple weeks later they were $200+. Quoting the owner: "I wished I would have waited to sell them online, had no idea they would go for that much."

The ease of hacking really gave those things a shot in the arm just when the online prices were tumbling.

If anyone said they would have guessed this thing was going to sell 2.3 million world wide and the demand still couldn't be close to met then they're a liar. At the time of its announcement I thought it was going to be sold as a fun little stocking stuffer for the 30+ year old gamer and that's pretty much it. This thing had more legs than anyone could have predicted.

They announced that they're extending their original delivery schedule well into 2018 to give everyone a chance to get one. They're also bringing the NES Classic back, so theres a good chance they finally realize that almost everyone who was buying these at retail were scalpers. Theres probably a good chance that Nintendo will actually make enough this time or at least keep releasing them until everyone who wants one has a chance to get one.

They increased Switch production to where they can be found pretty easily now and they also reproduced just about all the Amiibos that used to be impossible to find.

Switch production is a poor example, IMO - because it's their #1 priority / main console right now. It's not a specialty item.

The Amiibos is a good example, but I also see the Amiibo as part of their main gameplan.

These "Classic" systems, I view more in line with things like the limited edition Zelda and Fire Emblem 3DSXL systems - made for a more specific group of buyers, so they don't care about short supply.

That's about all I have to say :) I'm happy they are talking about it...super excited.

Limited edition is a poor example because the supply is just as the phrase suggests; limited. Nintendo just needs to figuring out a way to prevent scalping since pretty much all their LE stuff is scalped worse than anything else in gaming.

Remaking certain Amiibos is actually a good comparison because they didn't need to go back and make more of ones such as Gold Mario or a bunch of those store exclusive ones (Ness, Shulk, Rosalina, Lucario, Meta Knight, ertc....) but they did. Those SSB ones also served as little more than a memory card and offered no character specific differentiation while during gameplay but they still remade ones people wanted to buy.

My Walmart got 25. Much more than I expected, but not a sure thing. Looks like small towns are getting 20 or so per store, and cities closer to 40-50 per store (in my area).

Nothing at the Targets near me, but I have two Walmarts within a couple of miles of each other and each location is getting 50+. Thanks for the links, guys. Looks like everyone who wants one should be able to grab one tomorrow.

Wish I could make it to Frys tomorrow. We're short and the CEO's in so I couldn't take Friday morning. frown

The reseller Market has already taken a hit on offerup. A month ago the preorders were up for $250 and now they're down to $170. I hope they dry up completely in the coming weeks.

I'll be hitting up a Walmart, and then if no dice, we will be at Target. They are supposed to have more stock than Wal-Mart
