Ya it's a smart tactic, I can't fault them there. When Game Pass first launched all MS had was Crackdown. Now with Gears 5 they're gonna probably double down or even triple their subs. Same with Ninty. Started with just NES. Now they got SNES under their belts and will likely go the same route. If I were the big N though I would add in free first party game weekends like MS does sometimes on some of their games for subscribers so ppl could spend time with games as like a prolonged demo to see if it will get them to buy it. I think that would be a cool tactic, kinda how they're doing timed trials with certain titles like Mario Tennis. For example for me, I would like to try Fire Emblem Three Houses before I pull the trigger.

Game Pass still had a pretty good selection of first party titles before Crackdown 3 with Halo MCC, Halo 5, all the Gears games, Forza Horizon 4, Sea of Thieves (say what you want but the support for that game post launch has been incredible) etc, plus a good library of 3rd party games. I could see Nintendo doing more of their free trials for their 1st games but probably not their heavy hitters like mainline Mario and Zelda because people will buy those regardless of a free trial. Hopefully they keep expanding on their service, they could do some really cool things with their IP catalog.

Still wondering, doesn't seem like any of the ways online allow me to do sync up. Could have sworn I already upgraded the firmware but maybe I didn't. Wish I could find the USB that came with it.

2nd Astral Chain. I kinda found it boring for about 5 hours, and then it just clicked. Probably because more weapons and attacks opened up, When the big claymore style strikes opened up that's when I got into it. Then you just get more guardians and it gets more fun. Before that it was just boring repetitive gun attacks while waiting for your legion to kill the boss. But then it just gets more fun because you have more attack styles. And I found myself getting better and having more fun. So give it some time.

To those who sent controllers in for drifting, is there any communication? Where did you send it to? The shipping label I got went to a third party company out of CA, and it's going to take a week just for it to get there.

It's in a tricky spot for me. The design is awful in that you're literally taking hits all the time and it's next to impossible to NOT take hits, but it's also much more satisfying to clear a stage due to the gauntlet you had to overcome. It's got some of the most forgettable music/enemy designs in the series, yet I remember it much better than MMX2 from my recent barrage of playthroughs.

Just beat it for the first time when the MMXLC came out. It was okay. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Grew on me.

I sent mine in for other issues, not the drifting thing. I don't remember any communication while they had them, but I do remember getting them back surprisingly fast. Definitely couldn't have been a week of 1-way shipping time.

That's right, where the heck is Donkey Kong Country 1 at least on the SNES online app? I'd think that'd be in their top 20 since they listed the other SNES mascot classics like Mario, Zelda, Metroid and F-Zero.

I wonder if Rare owns any of those old assets at all, even something small, which prevents any of them from being re-released without their permission? Seems odd that not even all of them were on the SNES Classic.

Wasn't just DKC 1 on SNES classic? I wonder if that's any indication about what they can give us on SNES online app. Maybe DKC 2 and 3 are owned by Rare still, or at least they may possess the distribution rights at the very least. The DK wiki says Nintendo owns all the DK characters, but mentions nothing about the past DK titles developed by Rare.

Even if they own some of the music or something like that then it could be a problem. With how MS has been towards Nintendo I doubt it would be more than a phone call to clear that up though and get those games on the SNES.

Rare has zero rights to Donkey Kong anything. The probably bigger issue is that Rare gets fat royalty checks, and Nintendo doesn't want to pay up for something they're practically giving away for free.

I wonder what the chances of these happening are now that they are available in their respective collections.

Of games that have a decent chance:
Super Punch Out!
DKC1-3
Super Double Dragon
Super Street Fighter II

Sadly many games are locked behind expired copyrights/agreements. Ken Griffey Jr Presents MLB, NHL '94-8, Turtles in Time, Rock n Roll Racing, NBA Jam TE/Hang Time.

It should be obvious that Rare doesn't own the rights to Donkey Kong. Nintendo still makes DK games and Rare didn't work on the arcade original. And Donkey Kong Country, in particular, was on the SNES Classic.

It is weird that Country wasn't one of the first Switch games.

I don't think anyone here was eluding to Rare owning DK outright, its more or less if they owned even a single asset from that game weather it be a character design of an enemy, piece of music from the game, whatever, then that could prevent Nintendo from releasing that particular DK game without Rare's permission. Its kind of like how Diddy Kong Racing is co-owned by Nintendo and Rare with each of them owning bits and pieces of that games assets.

I don't think Rare owns anything regarding the DKC trilogy. Those games can still be purchased via Virtual Console on Wii U, as can the Donkey Kong Land trilogy (also developed by Rare) on Virtual Console for 3DS.

edit: Speaking of Donkey Kong Country though, next week a game called Jet Kave Adventure is releasing on the eShop that the devs say is heavily inspired by DKC.

I am that way too, but Nintendo games definitely lack a certain later and depth of story that PS4 games have. I loved BotW and all Mario games and still play them but the depth of gameplay, story, etc of TLoU, Days Gone, even Control, it's just not there.

I'm playing Astral Chain right now and even there it's a little bland and more about just the action. Definitely more Bayonetta and less Nier Automata. Actually I don't see any NA in this game at all so far.

So I couldn't imagine not owning a PS4 and a Switch to be honest. But the last of us is truly a masterpiece in pretty much every way.

Wondering if I should get a Switch Lite for Sword/Shield. It makes no sense, I had a 2DS with Moon, this would be the exact same thing, literally, only with better graphics. The game is not great. So why? I guess I like Pokemon battle graphics more than I even realized. And maybe I'm just curious to own a Switch now that they made a non bad model. (No detachable parts)

I wonder which I would get, Sword or Shield.

I don't think Nintendo RPGS lack depth of story or character. Fire Emblem, Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2, etc. . So there are those types of games too. There is room for those types of games too.

TLoU looks like one long ass cutscene. Not interested. I think I can start see why Nintendo has remained successful. As bad as their games are, they convey the right intent and the audience / Ninty fans clearly get what that intent was. They are the gameplay driven company, unabashed. The fact they milk the crap out of the same handful of series actually serves to prove a point in a way.

Well I'm definitely glad to have both. Won't games have good gameplay and more realism and a better story element but Nintendo has better multiplayer experience and better gameplay on some games.

Ultimately if you go fanboy of just one system I think you're missing out. If you think with just a Nintendo you're not missing anything with games like last of us, Spiderman, HZD, Cyberpunk 2077 that's fine but to me that would be missing a huge chunk of good gaming with kind of a tired line

Because the "gameplay" of Spiderman and Uncharted 4 etc are amazing and Nintendo doesn't have anything close to that on that level, same as Sony not having anything like Smash, BotW etc.

They're just too different to crown one over the other.

Nintendo made games also tend to age better than other dev's games. You can still pop in SMW, Mario 3, Super Metroid, Wind Waker, F-Zero, DKC, etc... (the list literally goes on) to where I can't think of many other games from 20+ years ago that are still good without putting on nostalgia goggles. Thats the magic of Nintendo games, they'll probably always be good, not all, but a very good chunk of them will be. I can't think of many games from last gen that if you were to play them for the first time right now then they would still be really good. In fact, you would probably find them damn near unplayable and this current gen will more than likely be the same even 5 years from now.

And some people only have time for 1 console, and if you're just a Switch player then you always have enough to play with how crazy this year has been for them in terms of releases.

I'm in the in-between camp. I love Nintendo games for replay value (same goes for MS exclusives I've liked) but love Sony games for the story. With that said, I rarely want to go back to Sony games. I guess it's like cheeseburgers or rib-eye steaks. While they're very different, and I have one far more often than the other, they both have a place in my life.
