The main criticism for the story is their is nothing that pulls all 8 together and party dialogue is somewhat limited. I would say individually, some of the stories are quite interesting. But to like the game, you need to really enjoy the combat/battle system.

I actually prefer octopath to a game like DQXI, but I know I'm in the minority.

I have negged everyone for their bad Octopath opinions. The game is so good. If you don't like SNES era RPGs, there's probably nothing there for you, but if you do, it might be the best game on the system. Scott, you like the old Final Fantasy games, right? You'll definitely like Octopath then.

Earthbound probably the greatest game ever made, doesn't mean I have to like Octo.. they should have just had one Unipath and fleshed the story out

I love SNES RPGs, especially FFIV and FFVI. The main thing that interested me in Octopath was that it looked similar to FFVI. But, a big part of my love for those games is their stories. If Octopath is severely lacking in that area, I'm not sure how much I'll like it.

Octopath's premise enticed me enough to play the demo, but the combat system turned me off. I used to love turn based games, but not so much anymore. I'll replay certain SNES RPGs every once in a while because I have a strong affinity towards them.

Boondock saints is pretty good, but if someone told you it's the greatest movie eve then you got sold a pile of crap information.

But you use one or two examples to make life rules about anything overhyped, you missing out. The PS5 was overhyped, you know we bought that crap. That Popeys chicken sandwich? Overhyped as hell, but it's still a really good sandwich.

But that's cool man, you do you.

Boondock Saints was trash garbage, and Earthbound is a great RPG. Stop letting hype or lack of hype dictate the media you try out, you'll miss a ton of good crap if you always allow fanboys to sully something without giving it a shot yourself. It's not like you need to hang out with any of them. Just my opinion tho.

I'm very similar to this myself. If I enjoy something before the hype comes for it, I'll like it. But invariably, if I check something out after the train, I won't like it- it just never lives up to the hype for me.

On the note of Octopath, I really think it shows the weaknesses of Square-Enix. They think that just by looking retro, us older gamers will gobble them up. Well... that's only part of it. The stories are also part of what made the 16-bit games so good. But S-E's new "retro" games are sorely lacking in them. (To be fair, most of their new games also have crap stories.) That isn't to say I can't overlook a weak story; I still think FF and DQ1 are decent games. But there's something more... the charm is missing.

Octopath (and Bravely, but that's another topic) aren't properly scaled. There are too many plateaus, and not enough of a curve. They are harder than a modern RPG, which I appreciate, but I know when the next difficulty spike is coming, because the game does get too easy. A good game should not rely on these spikes for difficulty; FF6 only needed one (the floating continent). Again, I could muscle through these if it felt rewarding to do so. But when an enemy encounter right before the plateau becomes worth almost nothing (and takes no thought), and the first area after the plateau can outright kill you with a bad break or a single slip, it feels like artificial difficulty.

There's also the excessive reuse of areas. This got better in Octopath, with the map travel, but you still need to go through areas repeatedly. Some areas make the enemies harder, so you don't get as bored, but even this is inconsistent. This area reuse is also about the time when it feels like they've run out of ideas, and are instead trying to hit a play time length. Both Octopath and Bravely have good to great first halves despite the flaws, but then the more severe problems arise, muddying the experience and seriously detracting from the games. I'd much rather they made shorter games that tighten things up nicely, but as they are, I have a lot of loose ends and an unfulfilled experience.

I pre-purchased the DLC but haven't played since before it released, so I can't comment on if it was worth it or not.
As far as the online multiplayer in general, I liked the little bit I played (spent at least a couple hours with it), but when playing with my Japanese friends we continuously ran into a glitch when we'd make it to the final floor against the boss and the glitch would force one of us to quit so the others could finish the round. It literally happened every time we made it that far, we've never been able to finish a whole match as a team by the end of it and so we just kinda stopped playing. I'd like to play again though so I'll see if they want to this weekend.

When they ported DOOM (2016) and Wolfenstein II to Switch, people praised Panic Button just for being able to get those games running on Switch at all. I think what most people failed to realize is that Switch is the least ideal place to play those games.

This is the single reason why I bought Wolfenstein: Youngblood on Switch last year. I just don't know that it was worth the trade-off in the end with how it looks and runs compared to the other consoles. I'm pretty sure DualShock4 is capable of gyro aim, I dunno why nobody made use of it.

I specifically got Doom for Switch because I wanted to play it in handheld mode. I've been waiting for Eternal to release on Switch for the same reason. The graphics were good enough for me.

I wasn't talking about you, rather commenting on Scott's post.

I played Bloodstained prior to the patch and had a lot of fun. I also have no problem going back to play Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, or any other good N64 game on my HD TV. Blocks and jagged lines don't bother me, in fact I'd gladly sacrifice graphics if it meant better and more fluid game play.

The problem with reviews are they vary greatly with opinion, and rarely do they get edited after a patch is released. Take The Witcher 3 on Switch, there are many reviews saying it looks terrible, it's a bad port, avoid the Switch version. In reality it looks fine and plays well. Are there better looking versions out there? Sure but the game is the same and your not tied to your TV/monitor which is a bigger perk to me than better graphics.

Switch seems to have a widespread issue with PS4 hand-me-downs being too blurry and choppy to be playable. I'm a PSP fanboy so I haven't placed too much emphasis on graphics before, but that changes imo when the graphics actively prevent you from enjoying the gameplay.

For the record if Switch is all you have I certainly recommend playing DOOM on it, just because I'm a fanboy of the series and will never not tell anyone to play it. But I'd be lying if I said the Switch port wouldn't feel like a step backwards if you've played it on the other consoles already. Yeah you get to play it in portable mode, but sacrifices had to be made like the game dropping to 20fps when there's so much action on screen (and a bad frame-rate will affect your enjoyment of a game more than it looking low resolution does). It's not an abomination like the 3DO port of the original DOOM was, so it's got that going for it I guess.
