I've been debating getting this. The first time I saw it on sale, I thought I'd want to play the previous entries in the series first. But, after skimming some gameplay videos, most of them look pretty primitive and/or boring, I don't think I'd enjoy them. This one definitely looks more modern and just better overall. The trailer makes it look fun, but I skimmed through a gameplay video and it looked less fun there. IDK, it has an 86 on metacritic, that's pretty good.

I'm only about 30-40 minutes in but so far but I really like it. it kind of reminds me of a Zelda platformer. I did find the background music annoying but other than that no complaints. The game seems like a steal at the sale price of $15.99.

What's interesting is that it came out in early 90's but has metroidvania aspects to it.

There are some early 90's games with Metroidvania elements, not a lot though

I'm pretty sure the new Monster Boy is a new game. I know the remake of Wonderboy was a remake, but I think this one is new. I don't know for sure though. I haven't played it yet.

Finally beat Bowser's Fury. I really enjoyed it. It would be nice if they could mix this and Odyssey for their next Mario title, or just roll with a bigger version of Fury. I really liked the big, single open world. I also enjoyed furious Bowser. Even at the end I got stuck with a couple blue coin missions to unlock the "final" bell, that made it challenging.

It's a bit of an oddball experience as a game though. It definitely doesn't fit with 3d World. I wonder if it was originally DLC for Odyssey that got too big, or a new concept that they decided not to make a full game of? Either way it got me to buy 3d World again and I ain't even mad. Easily worth $50 for Fury and 3d World on the go.

@KCPenguins I doubt it was DLC for Odyssey considering it uses all the same gimmicks and mechanics as 3D World just with the camera following instead of a fixed position. It seems like they definitely built it off 3D World and just decided to make something new. I agree the next 3D Mario should take a few pages out of the Bowser's Fury book.

My daughter got Ring Fit Adventure for Christmas, but due to getting other new games and things, we just finally got around to playing it a few days ago. So far, we're really enjoying it. It's no joke either, you can really get a good workout from it! I watched my kids playing it first and thought it looked super easy. But then when it was my turn, after going through the preliminary stuff where it asks for your info and tests your strength in a couple ways, it put my difficulty level at 23, much higher than the 7/8 my kids started at. It was pretty freaking hard, so I backed it off to 20. It's still very challenging though and kicks my butt. Anyone else tried this out? What did you think of it? What difficulty level did you play at?

Also, a week or two ago, I finally convinced my wife to try out Animal Crossing. My kids both love it and had gotten back into it recently. I knew she'd like it, but she's in love with it even more than I expected. So much so that I had to get another Switch lol My kids both have Switch Lites, so my Switch is the only one that docks. We kept having issues where she wanted to play AC, but me or my kids needed my Switch for Ring Fit Adventure, or I needed it for the Mario Kart tournaments I've been participating in (Mario Kart is one of the few games I don't like to play in handheld mode). Now she can play whenever and wherever she wants, she's happy smile It's pretty annoying that the game doesn't use a regular cloud save though. If it did, she could just easily hop on my Switch when it's available

It's been cool having her playing games though. In the past, she's played some stuff with us like Mario Party, Wii Party, Mario Kart, Towerfall, and occasionally some other things. The party mini-games have been the only games she really enjoys though, until now. I'm curious to see if this opens the door to her playing more stuff!

I got Ring Fit Adventure a few months ago. It is a very good workout, especially if you're playing to win. I had a few issues with it, like some of the better workouts weren't as strong, so I wound up doing pointless exercises so I could have stronger attacks. I'm sorry to say I haven't played for awhile, but it is definitely a good workout.

I was planning on picking up Ring Fit when stores inevitably discount out the big box games, I'm hoping that'll be late summer early fall as they prep for holidays.

As for a Switch for the wife, if you can get a good deal by all means jump on it. I got a V2 for me and a V1 for the family. The kids have started to ask for their own, but we limit their access to games so they can wait. Frankly I'm ok with that as there is too much reputable sources talking about a new Switch, either upgrade or whatever, that I'm more than willing to wait another year or two before buying a third Switch.

My kids got Switch Lites for Christmas 2019 from my mom. They still read and play outside a lot, so I was ok with them having their own. It was getting harder and harder to share the 1 switch (mine) between the 3 of us anyway. I like still having my Switch v2 in the house so that we have one for playing games on the TV together as a family. I'll probably upgrade to the new version if/when it comes to be.

Ring Fit is no joke. I need to do it more regularly, but it's definitely a good workout. I just checked- I do it on level 26. Some of the exercises like squats or leg presses are hell, but I always feel like I've gotten a good workout afterwards. My five-year-old plays it too and really likes it. He's actually twice as far as me in the game, playing on level 7.

I'm finally giving Hollow Knight another chance. I was REALLY close to giving up on it again, but it suddenly started to click, and now I'm really starting to love it! It kind of feels like a mix of Ori and Steamworld Dig.

Also, I played a bit of Bowser's Fury earlier. So far, I'm really not impressed. I hope this is just a one-time thing, and not a new formula they're going to try to incorporate into the next 3D Mario game.

It starts slow and the difficulty and weakness of your character at the beginning doesn't help, but once you actually start gaining new abilities and equippables, the game shines for sure. I think so ended up putting 70 hours into it.

You need 1 set of joycons to play. No simultaneously multiplayer or co-op, you have to take turns.

@kommie just need one set of joycons. The adventure part is solo. There are some multi-player challenges, but it's turn based rather than simultaneously, which makes sense because they only give you one ring and one leg strap.

I think it was mostly the slowness that was making me lose interest. I kept wandering around but not really finding anything but dead ends. Once I got a couple boss fights under my belt and gained some abilities, I started enjoying it. Also, the area you start in looks super dull (everything is gray). Getting to the first new area helped a lot.

Ok, I played some more of this today and I'm enjoying it a lot more now. I'd like to see the platforming get more difficult later in the game. I can't decide for sure yet if I would like an entire Mario game to be this style, but at the moment I'm leaning toward no.

I'm not 100% sure on the order, but at the moment I'd rank them like this:
Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 (i'll combine these since they're so similar)

I do like SM64's formula but it's aged too much. I've tried Sunshine two different times now and can't stand it. I plan to give it one more shot on Mario 3D All-Stars since I'll be able to turn off the inverted controls, plus I expect it will control better overall like SM64 did.

1. Camera

2. I think having to shift between FLUDD nozzles interrupts the "flow" one would expect with most 3D Mario games.

3. Similar to point 2, having to stop to spray water using FLUDD again interrupts the "flow".

Definitely all 3 of these. I also just found the level layout to be awful. You would have to do really difficult/annoying platforming to get to an area, and then one tiny mistake would send you all the way back. This was present in SM64 as well, but not nearly as bad IMO.

I disagree. SM64's camera rarely, IIRC, got put in a place where you couldn't see Mario. Toggling between Lakitu and Mario cameras never gave me problems personally. Sunshine's camera literally gets behind walls rather easily where you can no longer even see Mario.

as far as cameras and I think many will agree. Due to the 3D depth, Super Mario 3D Land was amazing. I think the newer games are better. So Galaxy 2, Odyssey, etc. . Sunshine was ok too, but it is HARD to play it on switch lite. Everything is so tiny, lol. Hard to see if I'm going to land on things or not.

I have never liked Mario 64. Didn't like it a year from launch when I borrowed it from a friend, didn't like it 6-7 years later when I got a super cheap used copy, didn't like it on DS when I traded for it here (loved the mini-games), and I still don't like it. I actually considered the Mario franchise dead (to me) up until Galaxy, and even then I only bought Galaxy because I had nothing else to play. (Pleasant surprise)

For 3d Marios:
I really liked Galaxy 1&2, 3d World and now Bowser's Fury.
Odyssey and Sunshine were ok.
64 and 3d Land were not good.

I agree with most of this 3D Mario conversation. I have never been a fan of Mario 64. I prefer Sunshine, but I completely agree with every complaint listed here. Scott is right on. It is so unbelievable frustrating doing all the platforming and then missing one jump and falling all the way to the bottom only to have to start over again. I played both of those games to 100%, but I find them way too frustrating to play through again. The Galaxy games were both great. I absolutely loved 3D World, and I wasn't a huge fan of Odyssey right away. After playing that one a 2nd time all the way through and now going back to 3D World, I will say Odyssey is my favorite 3D Mario without question. Bowser's Fury is ok, but too repetitive for me.

Been playing a lot of Hades. This is such a fast paced high octane rogue like that even in death I'm like JUST ONE MORE RUN! And the voice acting and story is pretty good too. I expected no less from Supergiant. The RPG mechanics are pretty deep too for a rogue game. Reminds me of Children of Morta. Only thing that stinks is even if you're on the final 30 something chamber and die you go right back to 1 but it's fine as there's so many upgrades to grind for it makes doing numerous runs worthwhile and rewarding to beef up Zagreus.

The level design in 3D Land is tighter. With the cat power up allowing you to climb everywhere, and being designed with multiplayer in mind, 3D World's levels often feel very sloppy in comparison.

That being said, 3D world elicits an overall feeling of joy when you play. 3D Land does as well, but to a lesser extent. Fewer "YEEEEEEEEEE!" moments. Although getting the Tanuki Suit with the scarf in 3D Land was a bigger "YEEEEEEEEEE!" than any single moment in 3D World.

However, 3D world has Luigi available from the start. So that alone makes it better.

Is this a deep RPG upgrade/skills game that a lot of time to do these tasks? And is it a heavy button smasher? I'm not into deep RPGs (don't have as much gaming time so usually quick pick up and play games get my attention) and button smashers, but this game looks fun.

Yeah you're basically like smashing 3 buttons the whole time and dodging. You get boons/buffs along the way on each run that enhance your attack power and give you perks as you progress up the pit with like 8 different weapons to unlock and upgrade. It's not a super deep, complex RPG like say a game like Divinity or Pillars of Eternity would be. It's just enough for a dungeon crawling beat 'em up with lite RPG like elements.

Just picked up Hades from Best Buy. Had no idea a retail version had been released. Don't think I've ever played a roguelike before. It's not really a genre that appeals to me, but I love Supergiant and I've heard amazing things about this game so I'm looking forward to checking it out!

It does get rather exhausting though like after I finally tackled the 2nd boss and died 2 chambers later I'm like well that was all for naught. Time to do it all over again. There is a god mode though in the options that let's you take less damage the more you die over time but I don't notice any difference. It's one of those games where you gotta grind for resources like 1000x before you can even think about finishing a complete run. I personally prefer Children of Morta's style over Hades with them having checkpoints after certain dungeons, but that's just me. Hades is still kinda addictive though. Just not sure if I'll be able to finish it 10x like they want me to for that true ending since I haven't even finished 1 yet and I'm already feeling it's redundancy and tediousness, even though I'm marginally getting stronger with each attempt, it still feels like a slog. Maybe pure rogues aren't for me.

South Park: The Fractured but Whole + every bit of its DLC is currently on sale on the eshop as a bundle. Think it's usually like $80-$90 all together but it's only $22 for the lot right now.

I snagged it because I've only played through the main game once on XBox One and never played any of the DLC, so figured I'd just get it for Switch to play handheld and eventually go through the DLC when I beat the main game again. If I were to buy each DLC individually on XBO it'd likely cost as much as this sale bundle anyhow.

Played some Katana Zero, reminds me of Hotline Miami a bit.

I've heard that a lot, but I've only played the first few levels of HM. Loved KZ tho.

Same premise, kill enemies, move screens but it's not side scrolling

Katana Zero is awesome. If you like that check out Ghostrunner.

Ghostrunner was cool, but man was it infuriating at times.

Yeah there were some bs moments. Good thing the checkpoints were really generous though.

Was browsing the games on sale page and found the perfect game for @Kommie. America Wild Hunting. Logo is a rifle scope targeting a bald eagle. This game is total trash.

"If you love to shoot with the most well-known guns, rifles, hand guns and machine guns of the market, you will love playing this shooter.

You'll find in this hunting game the real birds you can shoot in real life hunting on North American territory from Albatrosses to Eagles, Swans to Ducks, Pigeons to Bufflehead and many more.

With its high-paced action, America Wild Hunting will challenge your dexterity and ability to concentrate."

Nothing like taking a pistol, rifle or machine gun to hunt birds of flight... or are those to fight the authorities after you illegally take an animal? Grand Theft Aviary. lol

I expected it to come out of China, but I'm guessing it's French Canadian?

what makes you think I like to play bad games on purpose? The only recent game I did that with was The Quiet Man, but that game is notorious for being bad.
