I am really thinking about picking one up - it looks like it has everything I would love to have in a top box..

I am looking for the latest one - but is there something I need to know about so I dont get an older one? or are they pretty much all the same thing?

Would like one that has the 4k and all that in it.. but I didnt know what I would need to search for it (as in if I look for one on ebay - for a cheaper price than paying from Nvidia

The old ones and the new ones have the exact same hardware inside. Same processor. Same RAM. Same storage (except the 500GB Pro, but you don't want that one because it's like $150 more for 500GB of on board storage that you can get with an external HDD anyway)

They all do 4K, stream games, etc. Performance is identical.

The new ones are smaller, but are missing the Micro SD slot. Some people use the Micro SD to expand the storage, but I tried that over and over again, and my Shield TV corrupted the cards multiple times. I went with a USB Thumb Drive and it works great (and they are cheap).

I don't know anything about a 2019 edition, but there are rumors of a new tablet from Nvidia.

I have both a Pro and a vanilla. The vanilla Shield has a slightly different remote. The remote that came with the Pro has a USB micro charging port on the bottom, but the vanilla remote doesn't. In fact, I'm not really sure what to do with the vanilla remote when it does run out of charge.

The remotes in general suck, though. The Pro remote will regularly refuse to charge, even when plugged in, and it loses its charge quickly. Really quite frustrating, and a pretty big blemish on an otherwise great product.

Agree with Admiral on the SD card slot. It's unreliable and useless for expanding storage, but semi-useful for one-time copying from your PC or something.

If you're looking to save some money and never purchased from Google Express before you can get 20% ($20 max) off:
https://express.google.com/product/NVIDIA-Shield-A...

It's $179.99 right now with $20 off it would be $159.99

the shield is definitely awesome, check out personal forum which is devoted to this awesome little box, link in my sig. there is so much you can do, its worth it i think.

admiral already summed up most of what id have said, there is also a difference in the game controller on the new and older versions, same overal layout but i think the newer one looks more comfortable, not that the old one is unusable. and you can use other controllers too so its really not that big a deal. but definitely dont bother spending a ton on the 500 gig model, you can get external drive way cheaper than the price increase.

You dont know how excited I really am for this... I have done more research and watch tons of videos on the Shield than I have done on pretty much anything electronics lol.

Already got rid of my 2 amazon fire tv boxes..

Making it into a Movie/gaming box is going to be awesome!

this can def replace all those things.

Simply Austin and ETA Prime are great youtube resources for shield emu stuff.

note that for ps1 and DS you need to get the paid versions of those, the free versions are intentionally incomplete, but they are like 4 bucks.

There's a badass set of addons for Kodi called "Zack Morris" that is really badass for retro gaming, especially if you don't have additional storage. Check it out.

I bought a Shield tv on eBay with gaming controller. It didn't have the regular remote though.

that remote is nice to have, but there are inexpensive remotes you can get for it that work just as well if not a little better. you can also control with your tv remote depending on settings, my samsung tv remote allows me to navigate and use several functions. the game controller does all that too though. did you get the older style smooth controller or the "rock" one.

It sure which style yet. It was a buy it now at $135 with free shipping. It just said it included a gaming controller. I figure if anything is wrong, I can easily return.

What is ds emulation like without a touchscreen? That seems like it'd be weird for sure!

That MIGHT be pushing it a little. Sure, the Shield can run all of the older stuff, but it's not perfect with N64 and every game. Plus, there is still input lag with the emulation/HD video, and it's near impossible to find that perfect retro controller replica.

I actually stopped using my shield for emulation other than slower games and RPG's. I still need to play that PSX Policenauts translation I started years ago...

Agreed. I have official remotes for all of mine, but if I didn't - I would definitely buy a $15 remote that has voice input and would skip the official one.. The official one is way overpriced, and often doesn't function 100% perfectly.

Ive also gone mostly to PC for emu as well. Older slow stuff like rpgs is fine though.

Ds emu without a touch screen is as you'd expect not perfect for every game. Anything that relies mostly on touch is tough to play with the right stick as the cursor. But I'm only concerned with the exclusive rpgs and most of those are playable

ES File explorer and sideload launcher will be a couple of the first things you'll want to get.

It doesn't have any sort of parental controls so I abandoned it in favor of an Apple TV for streaming where I can atleast passcode restrict apps. Major gap IMO.

Great in other ways though.

oh dang, that was a good file manager for shield. zarchiver is another option, for some things it worked better at going into detail and digging into files, but i didnt like it as much for general stuff
