it will take off hard after the second dungeon, the first six hours is getting everything going. I put in over 100 hours and would have gladly spent another 100. I miss this game every day. anime high school life is so much better than real life. id much rather be goofing around with ryuji and spending time with my waifu Ann and phantom thieving than adulting today.
if you can put a marathon sessions in sometime over the next couple days you will be able to start to get into the meat of it, its like an anime, there is some set up but once its running its hard to stop.
we had a topic a few months back that was largely spoiler free with lots of tips, and I could talk about this game forever and not get tired of it, so if you hit any snags or need tips just post. I look forward to re-living this experience through your play through, this is my #2 game of all time.
definitely prioritize Kawakami's and Takemi's social links when they become available is one of the #1 tips, the rewards from leveling those are important, as well as Chiyaya. be sure and hit the drink stand in the subway every sunday. use the bath house on Monday and Thursday I believe it was, and do the burger challenges as they become available. oh and always make sure you have a couple books with you, on the subway its free leveling. you get more points for studying at the diner on rainy days. doing things on certain days grants bonuses to that stat, like the bathhouse, you'll know its the right day because it will say something like special herbal bath, but its always the same day. don't underestimate buffs and debuffs in battle. there are just so many tips lol.
the dlc personas can be a boon early if struggling, Kagura (sp?) and a couple others are pretty great but are OP early but don't level much til you get higher level as you don't earn enough exp early to level them really, but gotta balance as you want your other personas to level for fusions.
money is tight early but will get much better after a bit.

Yep, Tony seems to have good advice on lockdown. To be honest, I almost always do whatever I feel like doing when I start a Persona game. Eventually you get a feel for what you should or should not be wasting your time on. Just make sure you take a lot of opportunity to up your Social Stats (Knowledge, Guts, Proficiency, Charm, Kindness) when you can, since they will aid you in progressing certain Social Links down the line.
Don't worry, it may feel like you are locked into a linear path for quite a few hours, but the game will open up and let you do what you want to do eventually. It has a very slow start as far as freedom goes. Persona 4 was pretty notorious for this as well.
yes definitely, you will get to a point where you have pretty relative freedom with how to spend your evenings. the Kawakami social link is important as once high level you get an ability to extend your evenings and get more time to do things, as well as not spending time on menial tasks
early on in the game it may be hard to do dungeons and momentos runs in one go, because you will start running out of SP. Sojiro will show you how to make coffee early in his social link and it can be used to restore it, and Takemi (the doctor) sells SP restorative accessories which are life savers in the mid game when you can start doing dungeons in one run and not using up multiple evenings.
I'm finally working on beating this, its been amazing and a great improvement over the others.
My only gripe with it is a few social links are just not useful compared to others. They really needed a little more balance to make them all useful. That plus guns are mostly useless aside from a handful of enemies weak to guns and even then you can always get gun skill on a persona.

which ones do you feel aren't that useful? some are definitely MUCH better than the others, kawakami, Chiyaya, the politician, I feel like Hifumi Togo is undervalued, the battle skills are great especially being able to sub characters in and out.
also you still have quite a ways to go, but some of the best parts of the game lie ahead.
the guns are weak until you work on the link with the tower persona, but a couple of skills are pretty nice, the insta-down is great but takes all your bullets
oh another tip is get all party members enough levels on their links to get baton pass as soon as you can.

Takemi - past level 5 doesn't really add much Ohya - unless later ones become harder security level is never much of an issue so far Oda - Gun skills seem basically useless Sojiro - With Sp Restorative accessories it makes SP restorative items basically useless. Iwai - Gun skills seem basically useless
Lots of them are unbalanced. Like Yusuke grants great skills with blank cards and other party members are just generic skills. If each party member had unique contributions to battle and not just the generic chance to survive fatal hit, chance to cure status ailment etc it would have been a lot better imo.
The gun skills just don't seem that useful because of the limited nature of them and I tend to do the entire palace in one run so i'd rather not rely on something that can't be renewed.
Overall though its much better then 4 with your social links imparting actual benefits to you instead of just extra persona xp. Its a really nice improvement and it adds a lot to the game.
yes I love the way it adds real benefit to the game and makes them matter.
ya at some point when money isn't an issue the discounts at the dr shop aren't that big a deal, at max the selection increases but I never bought a lot of stuff there
ohya is a great example of one that's not as useful, but I used a lot of persona's that a high level with her helped In fusions
sojiro eventually teaches curry and its good to have, especially once kawakami can start making it and coffee for you. the accessories eventually don't restore enough and you will need some items
iwai and oda, I didn't get many of these til the late game and didn't use them a ton. at rank 5 you get more bullets, and at 6 you get reduced cost for down shot. warning shot which you get on the way to those is good for negotiating.
oh and another good tip is to always prioritize weapons and armor and buy the upgraded guns as you can, you will use the melee weapons much more and an enemy weak to guns will be downed either way regardless of overall power.
I know I mentioned her, but work the fortune teller hard when she comes up, for some money you can greatly increase the speed at which you level your confidant ranks and your stats.
I loved it from the beginning too maybe its a problem with you Longhorn.
I'm just kidding seriously, after finishing the game I have a lot to share about it that people are going to find really unpopular. Its still my favorite JRPG and I love it but this game I have realized is FLAWED.
I wont saw it couldn't do some things better and there aren't some flaws but I also love it, its my top jrpg for sure and was a wonderful experience that I thought about constantly when I wasn't playing it. that sweet art book should be coming in soon, its been delayed a time or two.
> OK I've been in this palace for an hour, almost died a few times, keep running out
> of SP. But I jumped into the palace pretty fast.
> Going to keep on gong hope I can make it thru.
Yeah, you'll be short on SP in the first couple of palaces. Just call it a night if you run out of SP and live to fight another day. As you keep playing, you'll learn to manage your SP and find ways to replenish it as well so you can knock out dungeons in a night or two and have more time for the social stuff.
> He's at the square in Shibuya iirc Older heavier set guy
Awesome, gonna go hit him up.
I'm at the 12 hour in game mark after beating the 1st palace. Can't even imagine how all the other palaces are but funny thing is it doesn't feel like grinding at all, like some FF games where it's a big time grind in some areas.
God I wish this was a Switch game. They REALLY need a game like this, the graphics and gameplay are perfect for it.
Crazy thing is when I heard it's a long ass game where you're in high school and you have to gain social stats and read a lot I was like PASS but everyone here raves about it and I was mid games so figure hey let's try it out.
Come to find out I got hooked man. Passed the 2nd palace and now I'm trying to up my stats more and get my politician rank up and stuff.
