Doesn't look like there's a discussion thread for PS4, unless I'm blind. Let's discuss PS4, then, in this thread.

Recent news: according to Kotaku, Gamestop is no longer taking preorders for the system. Hope you got your preorder in!

Is 4K and a PS4Pro & Xbox One X upgrade worth it? I get that the X1X isn't out yet but I don't know if it's worth the upgrading and buying a 4K TV and the consoles because it's a pretty expensive upgrade. Anyone else here do that? Is it worth considering more?

If you already have a 4K set, the PS4 Pro upgrade is definitely worth it.

But I probably wouldn't buy a 4K Display AND a Pro just for the visuals if you're happy with current 1080p.

Personally i do notice the visuals upgrade for HZD, UC4 etc. So the upgrade was worth it for me, but I already had upgraded my display to 4K before that.

Also note HDR is just as important, so you need a display that does HDCP 2.2 with HDR and 4K which is pricey.

Got the platinum trophy on Shadow of War tonight. Loved (almost) everything about it - the game just feels so good to play, and it has a steady learning curve. By the end you feel like an expert pulling off all the moves. I'm always someone who prefers to take my time, plan out strategies, and be stealthy in games when given an option, and this catered well to that play style (although there are cases where you have to jump into the middle of the action, but you can usually retreat if you need a breather). The only negative for me was the last act went on FOREVER. I won't spoil anything but you're forced to repeat a certain gameplay element over and over and after a while it gets tedious. Fairly easy platinum, although some trophies were time consuming. Total play time was around 70 hours although I tend to be a perfectionist so I was likely slower than average.

I'd give it a solid 9/10. Mordor was more fun to me because I was exploring the world for the first time; this is basically a bigger better version.

My copy of Mario Odyssey has been sitting under my TV staring at me for the last week and I look forward to finally giving it a go this weekend.

I don't think it's worth the expense on it's own, all at once. I'm going tv first, then upgrade systems later. It sure feels like the Pro and X are half-assed a bit and will take more time to standardize. "Leave it up to the developers" basically means that Sony/MS can market 4k as the future but can't guarantee games will support it. 1080p but with better framerates is certainly great but not for $400/$500 IMO.

There are some tricks in the systems and the tvs to upscale and improve visuals a bit. So I'm going to enjoy the tv and then upgrade the systems once I feel there enough Pro/X-specific enhancements available to get me excited about it.

From what I've read there is a lot more recruiting in War, and that was one of the things I didn't enjoy too much in Mordor. Any chance that's part of the final grind you thought went on too long? Don't you have to build up an army or something? You can put it in spoiler tags if it's something else.

You're on the right track.

You're forced to defend the fortresses throughout all four areas repeatedly, and it just keeps going and going. The problem is if you lose while defending you have to (or should if you want the best chance) go through each individual new warchief's side mission to recruit/kill them and disable the fortress's defenses before re-attacking again (and then you have to go through the new overlord too). There are ten stages total in Act IV but some later stages have you defending three or four fortresses per stage.

So yeah you end up building up a stronger army in each area, but after ten stages it suddenly ends. Would have loved to see one final massive battle using the top warchiefs and overlords from each area so there's some extra payoff.

It just tacked on extra hours that I would have rather spent playing another game. But I must say the "true ending" you get as a reward is pretty damn cool.

the final act of shadow of war is much more manageable if you can take a bodyguard into the overlord fights that can exploit their fear, or if you can somehow do it yourself, a dazed captain is doomed. shaming them is as good as killing for the purpose of taking the fort if they are just too tough

you do have to build up, but you can do that in line with the act, by just recruiting the attacking orcs or if you do die, just recruit the war chiefs as you pick them off to re attack and then you have your high level orcs. the final act is 10 stages, i could have stood it to be about 6, but once you get the knack its not so bad.

iron reinforced gates, spiked walls, hellfire, metal walls, shelobs brood, and fire mines make the fort defense easier imo, or it seemed that was the setup that made it easiest for me. setting your highest and best captains as your warchiefs of course helps as they will repel attackers best.

Those sound like good strategies. That's one thing I realized just last night -- I kept forgetting to assign bodyguards to myself. Would have made things a lot easier at times. Woops!

For all the overlord fights I ended up using the same strategy: run back and forth and scale the walls with the archers, then slowly wear down the overlords with arrows. The one time I thought I was screwed was when I got a level 65 arrow-proof overlord with a poison weapon that could take me down in two hits. Just as I was out of "last chances" and about to be killed I had some deranged ally captain jump in and save me with a single killing blow to the overlord. Then he just let out a maniacal giggle and ran off. Was my favourite moment in the game.

ya i had a follower save me from one of those in an overlord fight as well, but he said something to the effect of "figures id have to be the one to save your hide, i trust you wont forget this" or something like that. but ya taking a good bodyguard into overlord fights is great, that was really the only time i used them, i found iron guard better during standard fights due to their numbers. you can dominate orcs in the overlord fights but they seem to die fast and get replaced, can be a good way to heal though. i kept swords and armor that would light enemies on fire and elven light doing poison that way i could hit them with all of it lol.

Haha right on -- yeah those regenerating orcs in the overlord fights were a pain. Sometimes I'd be sniping from up top on the sides and four archers would appear right next to me.

Eleven Light was one thing I didn't use enough of either...my main strategy was always jump in and get a few hits in, hit the overlord/warchiefs with headshots until I ran out of focus/arrows, then retreat to recharge. As a result the game probably took me 10+ hours more to beat than it should have. smiley:::raspberry

Ok this thing is as beautiful as the game itself. This is the sickest art book ever. It's paperback but has a book cover or dust jacket whatever, and it's made out of this super slick and glossy material it's awesome. The cover itself that wraps to the back is like the steel book but all red and black.

Inside is like every piece of art from the game seems like plus so much more and design sketches and prototypes.. each character has a section with portraits from the game and info on the thoughts for their design etc. This book is siiiick.

I can see why it got delayed a couple times putting all this together must have been no small feat.

Had to grab another year of PS+ from Amazon, at that $40 price tag, even though i'm already good into mid 2019. Tough to pass it up at $40. I think the cheapest that i was able to find last Black Friday, was around $45.

Mine just came in as well. It is a gorgeous art book. I was surprised that it's SC as well, but that may actually help the binding in the long run. This thing is thick! I'll take my time flipping back through it when I can. For now, my daughter just ran off with it and is holding it hostage in her room. She's a good artist, so I'm sure it will give her some inspiration.

All in all, a fantastic pick up for around $25. yes

so Blue Reflection. (edit, this game is also subtitle only, which i am fine with, i like the Japanese VA's in most games and since this game is VERY Japanese it def fits better, anime schoolgirls should sound like anime magical girls lol)

this is an interesting(ish) game so far, im like in the 4th chapter or something like that. imagine a moderate to ok slice of life magical girl anime, and playing it in a kind of persona-lite style, but kinda not, but kinda. youre a first year student in an all girls high school in a Japanese town. you were a very talented ballet dancer who was heading for a career in it but an injury means you cant do it anymore. turns out you are a reflector (blue "reflection") and these people can turn into reflectors and your leg is no longer injured and you can fight demons. you have limited-ish control of the passage of time, but sometimes it lets you choose who to hang with, and sometimes it decides for you if its in a sequence that's moving the story along. the girls you form bonds.. social links..lol, but not really, in certain boss fights can help you, and the power of their ability seems to depend on your social link. the more bonds you build also gets you feeling fragments you can use on your abilities to make them more powerful. this is very Japanese and magical girl-ish, which im digging so far.

there are only three characters for battles, and they can be somewhat customized, but its clear that Lime is your bruiser, Yuzu is your healer and support and Hina, "you", are the middle ground and buffer/debuffer/all around-ish character. there is a level cap and you cant learn all skills so you kinda need to plan. there is no exp system, and battles only net items. to level up you do missions that have you exploring the school, or spending time with the other girls and doing enough of this gets you growth points, which levels up your attack, defense, support or technical. combat even takes place mostly in an area called momentos... i mean the common, which is the manifestation of peoples feelings and subconscious. each area is very small, very small. combat is not the point of this game though you do it fairly often. the girls have attack with different attributes, like impact, slash, pierce etc and some enemies resist or are weak to these. each character so far tends to favor one of these traits.

if you have played all the big rpgs this year (and last year maybe) it maybe worth a look if the pull of the weeb is strong, but if you haven't played persona 5, nier, tales of berseria, FF15, etc then play those first for sure. this is a b-tier game so far. check out some youtube of the game in action if you are curious,

if you are a long time Gust fan, which i am, you will find things to like but it so far doesn't seem as deep as an ar tonelico. and speaking of tonelico, check out the writers room in the school for a neat easter egg.

I remember last gen Sony was pushing 3D gaming to the point where they even released their own little 3D monitor where 2 people could play together and each would see their own separate screen. Do any PS4 games support 3D, or have they given up on it?

I've tried Trine 2 and Bound in 3D (both were pretty good), but I don't think there are many more 3D PS4 games out there. I'll link a list of 3D compatible games if I find one.

Yeah, For most people HDR is a bigger deal than 4k itself (even though HDR is not really available on 1080p sets...but could be). Some of the more expensive 4k tv's still do 3D but you kinda have to go out of your way to have it now. I think once VR showed itself as "super 3d", regular 3D was all but dead. It's certainly proven to be a fad...once I got PSVR I haven't bought a 3D bluray.

On PS4 the only games that do it are PSN titles which says a lot. I played Trine 2 and it looked really nice but I certainly miss how the PS3 had so many more 3D games available.

As a very big 3D fan I can tell you, in 2017 pretty much every major TV company did not have a 3D tv. I have 2 3D tvs. Both are 2016. An LG OLED and a Sony FALD. Even LG ditched 3D for their OLEDs and they were doing passive 3D way before everyone else.

I agree with that. I have a decent Sony 40" with decent black levels. I wish they'd make higher budget 26" - 40" TVs.

No, but only because it's $35 at Target on Black Friday. I have enjoyed pretty much all of the Need For Speed games.

So LEGO titles are on sale in the PSN Store?

ya there is a warner bros sale. not many titles but some good ones.

neg on need for speed, I don't have time for racers anymore. the last ones I did were the first three Gran Turismo's, but I literally had unlimited time back then.

got .hack, don't know when i'll play it lol. but wanted to support that one no doubt

amazon has only ever gotten me one game late, and I get a lot from them. they aren't getting me my xbox one x til Thursday, but I wouldn't have had much time to mess with it before the weekend anyway.

Hoping to snag the new Need for Speedalso this Black Friday at Target yes Haven't really enjoyed the series in years but this one looks pretty cool, despite the mediocre reviews coming in.

I'm sure Amazon will match Target's price on NFS, as well.

I love the NFS games but the new one is getting blasted for heavy level grinding which is all about pushing micro-transactions. I hate that. But I will still get it at some point.

Really appreciate the review. I've considered picking this up after a good price drop, but it will likely be a ways down the line. If I'm honest, I think that I probably just like the dream like look of the art more than anything.

I picked up .Hack as well. It really took me by surprise on the PS2 and became one of my favorite series of games. Sounds like they have made some pretty nice improvements, not to mention the convenience of one disc as opposed to three. It'll be a while before I can get started but I'm looking forward to it.

Still wasting too much free time on Dragon's Dogma: DA. As usual, I'll likely screw up my build by switching vocations constantly. Oh well, at least the game will remain somewhat challenging at level 200.

lol. ya I feel like I should be playing something "better", like DD:DA or .hack, or etrian odyssey, or the list goes on, but as a long time Gust fan and not playing one of their games in a long time I just really wanted to check it out. I don't think i'll be trying to do such a "complete" run like I did with persona where I try really hard to get as many links up as high as I can etc, combat is not at all challenging yet so if I don't need to grind out a lot of levels this one may go a little faster. i'll play some tonight mostly likely and probably get a lot of play in this weekend, I need to look up about how long it is supposed to be.

edit: apparently someone on howlongtobeat.com submitted a clear time of only 30 hours, and a 100% of just under 36.

apparently its also the final game according to the description there in Gust's ""Beautiful Girl Festival" Project, so gotta look that up, as ive never heard of it edit again: its just what they called the release schedule for this game, atelier firis and nights of azure 2, since they had several games releasing closely with female protagonists.

.Hack on the PC's nice and smooth once you enable vsync and I'm sure it's great on PS4 too, 60fps makes a world of difference, though in small ways it does break the game (Rengekis execute at doubletime so the voice prompts can start to overlap for instance, other pre-rendered particle effects and menu navigation are still 30fps which is a bit disjointed and battle overall has less lag which means it's harder to hit Rengekis or gauge hits in general). Cutscenes all look suuuuuuper better now though. Really hope they consider polishing the original quadrilogy, biggest reason I spent money on it. Hoping they decide after seeing the money that there's a market, the G.U. series was the safe bet for HD upscaling but the original quad would benefit most from it.

You guys and gals need to try out Hidden Agenda. It's an Heavy Rain/Until Dawn type game you can play with as many as 5 other people. It's only about 2 hours long so it's something you can play through in a sitting and the way the game's story is structured makes it a really cool experience. We didn't get the best ending, unfortunately, so we may try again some other time. It's the first mature, non-party game I've been able to play with my mom and all my siblings and it was a blast!

Also spent about an hour with .Hack this morning. It's just as I remember it (lip syncing and all lol). I'm going to have a lot of fun playing through this again!

Oh, I'm not getting that on PC, weird.

Also seems a lot harder to pull off Rengekis at least in the start... I think they boosted damage, and they DEFINITELY boosted XP gains. Looks like this will be a lot easier to beat than it was on PS2. Kinda disappointed about that.

I'm also really looking forward to Detroit!

I'm pretty sure it's the same experience whether you play solo or in a group...you'll just be making all the decisions on your own when you play solo. I'll boot it up again when I get home to see if there are any other differences.

You're in for a treat then. The Wind Waker was my favorite Zelda until I played Breath of the Wild.

But as much as I loved Breath of the Wild, P5 and Nier have the edge over it, in my opinion. And 2B is the runaway winner of the best girl award. It's not even close!

that's cool. im in the super minority in that they just don't grab me. i have tried to play OOT and MJ, i see why people like it but i guess just not for me as much as some other games are. i have only played a little bit of botw on the wii version, but its no Nier for me, or P5 or horizon.

I'm really excited for Zelda. As far as best girl. Makoto Niijima (Queen) still has my vote. But 2B is a finish line second place.

My top games thus far are

1. Nier Automata
2. Persona 5
3. Super Mario Odyssey
4. Destiny
5. Puyo puyo Tetris
6. Prey
7. Cuphead

I am in a rush to play both Wolfenstein, Horizon, and LoZ. I'm sure they'll tound out top 5 based on reviews, word of mouth, and of course and most importantly what you guys have said.

Sadly, I have not played as many games as I would have liked to this year much less finished them.

Here are games Ive watched others play and my kids play that are just superb

Final Fantasy Stormblood
Resident Evil Biohazard 7
Fortnite
Arms
Splatoon 2

i think my tops this year would no surprise for the top three be,

P5
Nier
Horizon
Tekken 7
Shadow of war
Ghost recon wildlands (was really surprised by this one but really had fun with it)

i feel like cuphead will be on this list when i get a chance to play. as will lego marvel 2 if its as good as the first one but i don't think its gonna be, looks too MCU-ified and lacking the characters of the first.

cant argue with 2B/A2 (i think A2 may have been my personal fav part of the game) or any of the p5 girls as best girl, of course Ann for me

My top 5 are:

1. Horizon Zero Dawn
2. Zelda: BOTW
3. Crash Bandicoot; N-sane Trilogy
4. Resident Evil : Biohazard
5. Rime

Honorable mentions are Prey, Everybody's Golf, Uncharted Lost Legacy, and Dishonored: Death of the Outsider.

I have yet to buy or play Mario Odyssey, Wolfenstein, Evil Within 2 or Nier, Probably get Nier and Wolfenstein on Black Friday. Mario and EW2, sometime down the road. I have Ghost Recon Wildlands and Vikings: Wolves Of Midgard, waiting for me to play them, from stuff released this year.
