Micro Machines World Series - 7/10

I grew up with MM and loved the NES game so I had high hopes on this. What's here is actually pretty good, graphics/controls/whatnot but it's so bare bones. It really needed more cars, more tracks, oh... and a SINGLE PLAYER MODE! There's no circuit mode, no real progression other than cosmetic unlockables for the 12 cars.

There's a battle mode a la Twisted Metal with capture the flag, bomb the base type stuff. Mildly fun for a bit. There's an elimination mode where the camera stays on the race leader and if you fall behind the screen you get eliminated. That got old quick. The real fun here is (surprise surprise) the RACE mode. All the more frustrating that it's entirely one and done races. Plus, no ones playing so it'll be one other person and the rest is bots.

There's fun to be had here for sure, but with the limited cars, tracks and modes it only goes so far. I expected just a little bit more meat on these bones. The machines are micro but so is the entertainment value.

Three Fourths Home ??/10

I'm not really sure what the heck it was that I played. Story didn't make much since, didn't really lead anywhere, and there was pretty much no back story....plus it was only like 15 minutes long. Easy 1000 achievements though, so I guess that its not really a total waste of $1.50.

Really fun so far. I hope that Microsoft starts getting more games like this for the Xbox One. Great humor, reminds me a lot of an older Rare game.

If you want a better understanding read the journals in one of the menus. Takes a while but it's interesting. There's also a bonus chapter after you finish the main one. Obtuse for sure but I like heady games like that.

It's a good game but $10 is the sweet spot. $30 is definitely asking too much for what's here.

Crash N' Sane Trilogy. Loving every drop of it right down to the really difficult levels from the first game. I've been waiting a long, damn time for this game, like many I suspect, and it will be really hard for me to personally score this less than a 9, even though that wild hog level just took me about 12 attempts to beat. 90's Crash can do no wrong in my eyes.

Not done yet. Loving it so far. The only thing I find a bit silly is the weird cutscenes they sometimes do. Where the characters are like basically still, mouth doesn't move etc.. but they are talking. I assume it's to save money, or be artsy? Idk, either way I just think regular cutscenes would have sufficed. A small complaint though, doesn't really detract from the game. I can hardly wait for 6...

Walking Dead Season One - 9/10

Replayed this one and still one of the best experiences I've had with a video game. Even remembering most of what happened, that crap still hits you hard.

Walking Dead Season Two - 6.5/10

I liked it, but it can't help but fall short of the bar the first game set. The lack of a clear narrative or relationship arc made this one have less emotional punch than the first one though. The deaths of characters also didn't seem to have the same weight as the first one, but that could also just be part of the evolution of the series - the world has gone to crap and people die. The decision they force you into making at the end is absolute crap though and completely illogical.

LEGO Mario Super Heroes Nintendo Wii U 7.5/10

I tried playing this co-op with both my sister (separate attempts), but I'm not a fan of having to use the Gamepad in most cases given its resolution. And it seems you can't use the Pro Controller when you're playing single player either (not a fan of that either). Also, and I'm noticing this more and more with third party WiiU games, there seems to be a fair amount of motion blur. I just don't like motion blur. The game itself is pretty fun. I've only completed four missions so far, but the story is weaving the characters in and out well. The flight controls for Iron Man still suck though (no surprise since they didn't fix this in LEGO Marvel's The Avengers). The WiiU didn't get any DLC (unlike LEGO Marvel's The Avengers), but there's still a ton of characters here. I'll probably just finish this out myself, and get the second game on PS4 down the line to play co-op.

Lego marvel was one of my top 5 games the year it came out. Avengers didn't live up to that for me and im afraid LM2 won't either but I hope it does. What I loved about the first not only that it was fun was that it was a lot closer to the marvel universe I grew up with and all they want to do now is mcu and they leave my beloved xmen and fantastic four out of everything because of saltiness and movie rights. Now given they are right those movies suck soooo much but just do them properly in games and Dont worry about it so much til you get the movie rights back.

I grew up a marvel fan more than dc but like dc more now... bring back my 616 and we may have reevaluate.

In Marvel's defense, they really do want the properties Fox owns back in the fold. So for that I am looking forward to LEGO Marvel 2. I think it'll be good, but they definitely seem to be going to MCU route by way of magic and cosmic as opposed to just being literally down to earth.

I can't help but think maybe I'd enjoy the game more on the 360 than the WiiU. I got the WiiU version because of how they handle split screen, but after using the Gamepad for it, meh. I enjoyed LEGO Avengers, but I've only played the Vita version. I still prefer the handheld versions of LEGO games for their shorter levels.

Also, and this is a personal boast, I love the 616 the most if for any other reason than that is my area code.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed {PC / Windows} 8/10
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe {Nintendo Switch} 8/10

Because I've already played Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and Mario Kart 8 to death on Wii U, now that I'm playing each game on a different platform I will make this into a little comparison review.

Graphics: Both games look good. The tracks have a lot going on in the backgrounds but I think moreso in the Sonic game. Both games keep a steady frame-rate at all times, it's really hard to pick which one looks better, so I'll say this one is a tie.

Music/sound: This one is a bit tricky. I don't often care about videogame music. Still, I get a nostalgic feeling when I hear the old Super Mario Bros. or The Legend Of Zelda music, but I usually disliked the music in most Sega games and most of it is still corny as hell when I hear it again in this game. Another thing the Sonic game has going against it is the annoying announcer. I recommend just going straight to the options menu and muting him asap. For this category, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wins.

Roster: The Sonic game has a decent number of characters to choose from, but who cares about racing as "Football Manager" or "General Winter" from Company Of Heroes? Something that bugs me about the Sonic game is that my main character is AiAi, but when racing online no two people can pick the same character, so if someone picks AiAi before me then I'm stuck using someone else. I'd say Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wins this category, too. Link almost feels out of place in a kart racer, but everyone else on the roster blends in really well.

Tracks: The Sonic racer has only 20 tracks while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has more than double that. While the Sonic racer has some really good tracks, it just feels like there aren't enough of them (even Mario Kart DS had more than 20 tracks). Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wins this category, even though it does have its fair share of boring tracks, the really good ones make up for it.

Multiplayer: Well, if you have enough players to play locally this could be a toss up as both games are fun, but if your only option is online multiplayer then Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wins easily as there are way more people playing at any time of day. I bought the Sonic game at launch on Wii U and even then I could never get into a full lobby of players online, and it's rare that I've been able to do it on Steam.

Overall racing: Very tough to choose a winner here. These are two of the best kart racers ever, as far as I'm concerned. The Sonic racer has a bit of a Diddy Kong Racing vibe, as you're going to be changing vehicles from karts, to boats, to planes. And as the name implies, the tracks transform during each lap so you're not driving the same route on every lap. It's a brilliant idea that I wish Nintendo had used in Mario Kart. There does seem to be a lack of shortcuts, though. There is also a career mode with missions that add a lot of replay value to the game for anyone who wants to play single player. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the other hand, is not very enjoyable to play alone (why don't they bring back mission mode from MK DS?)

So, kart racers are infamous for having rubber band AI that can really piss you off, so which of these does it worse? In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe if you're too far ahead of the guy in 2nd place, you should expect to get bombarded with shells, or lightning bolts or any other item that can screw you over just long enough for the 2nd place character to catch up to you. In the Sonic racer that isn't much an issue because the 2nd place racer will never be too far behind you. But the AI isn't cheap, so as long as you're good enough to get to 1st place, as long as you don't make any major mistakes you can expect a fair race. The Sonic game offers no equivalent of a blue shell, and that's not a bad thing, imo.
The difficulty level is a bit higher than Mario Kart's. At times, Sonic's "B level" (medium difficulty) is almost equal to Mario Kart's 150CC. But the AI racers in the Sonic racer never really feel unfair as far as item usage, and a couple of days ago I even got the achievement for winning a race without getting hit by any items. Just think about how low the odds of that ever happening in a Mario Kart race are... So this is definitely a category where Sonic's game wins.

So I guess adding up the categories would mean Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the better kart racer, but I'm alternating between the two of them and there are times I'm playing MK8D and wishing I was playing Sonic and vice versa. The Sonic game really needed more tracks and a better selection of characters and it doesn't dethrone Mario as the king of kart racers, but it's a close #2.

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, why do I still rate it an 8 even with the improvements it offers over the Wii U version? It may be a great game, but the bottom line is it's still just an enhanced port and it might end up being the only Mario Kart we get on Switch, so it's disappointing that it was "wasted" on a port.

I prefer the Wii U version of MK8. Bringing back the two items at a time thing was a bad idea with 12 racers on the track. Screws first place even more than usual, with double the chances of getting blue shelled. Or, if you have a horn, your chances of losing it are even greater with twice the opportunity to get hit by lightning, AND the new opportunity to lose it to a Boo. Mario Kart desperately needs item toggle switches like Smash Bros. has.

That being said, I think the overall track theming and layout is better in Mario Kart. That might be partly because they're significantly shorter in MK, so it's easier to keep the design very tight. The levels in Sonic that totally change from lap to lap are cool, but most of the levels don't change much, if at all.

In defense of the announcer, what if you DO like him? Mario Kart doesn't even have an option for an announcer. I fail to see how this is a win for Mario Kart when it's an optional feature in Sonic. Besides, it is my understanding that the Japanese version has Takenobu Mitsuyoshi (the "Daytonaaaaaaaaaaa!" guy) as the announcer, which is always a win when he is involved.

I haven't played Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but I would like to see Nintendo release the additional content (especially the Battle Mode) for WiiU at some point. They won't, but I want it.

MK8 and Sonic Transformed are really close for me. I like the character roster and diversity of the tracks in Transformed more, but the karts and the actual course design in MK8 more. MK8 still suffers from horrible rubberbanding, but the higher levels of difficulty in Sonic are just unfair sometimes. Items are a wash for me, but Transformed is an improvement over the first game. As for the announcer, I liked him in the first Sonic Racing game, but turned him off completely in Transformed.

I have Sonic Transformed on Vita and WiiU, and have unlocked everything in both sans the mods that require winning on the highest difficulty. I go back and forth on getting the Steam version when it's on sale for the PC specific characters, but haven't yet.

Sonic Transformed is bland. The whole game is just an exercise in drift mechanics. Just win races and then play them again and again on harder and harder difficulties until you start questioning life. Not to mention the tank battles, it's truly a wonder that those ever made it past quality control. But then again this is Sega we're talking about.

Speaking of Sega, I'm currently playing Phantasy Star Portable 2. There's a pretty decent action RPG at the core of it but so much time is spent walking around and picking up loot only to sell it later. When you beat a mission you can't just start the next one because you can only carry 60 items at a time so you can't just let it build up, you wanna immediately unload your loot in storage then sell what you don't want to keep, and carefully inspect your new weapons and upgrade the ones you plan to use. I've probably done over a thousand upgrades because each weapon requires you do it ten times for some reason. This made more sense in previous games when each time required materials and increases the chances of the weapon breaking but now you just pay a small fee, so there's no reason not to just go straight to level 10.

Also the maps are annoying to wade through, I just wanna fight enemies not walk around breaking boxes and looking for the next door. The poor camera control doesn't help either. Can you believe the camera is 100% manual in this game? Run... stop... turn.... run... stop... turn... 60 hours of that.

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier - 7.5/10

First two episodes had great twists at the end, but then the last three episodes definitely seemed to pale in comparison. I liked the writing a lot and the new characters were pretty interesting for the most sort and I also like how they weave in elements of the tv show and comics to their narratives. Biggest problem I had is that they set you up to make a couple of big decisions with Clementine that I think are heavily influenced by the fact that you've spent two games with her so it sort of skews the decision making process (at least it did for me).

Titanfall 2 (PS4) - 8/10 - I think I have just 1 more mission left for the campaign and this has been enjoyable. The movement/traversal stuff feels great and adds a nice layer to a standard, linear FPS. This also feels really polished as I've had zero issues or glitches. It's a shame everyone thought it was an X1 exclusive and didn't buy it.

The one thing that I'm having trouble with is the titan loadouts. I keep finding new ones and now with a list of like 6-7 it's tough for me to remember which one(s) I preferred. It's usually trial-and-error of "I think it's this one...no wait, where are my missiles?". But I'm sure if I player multiplayer a bunch it was be easier to appreciate.

I'm halfway through and it's been a little bit of a letdown so far. It's heavy on the climbing linear paths and talky bits and lighter than previous Uncharted games on engaging gameplay and flashy playable set pieces. It definitely felt a bit long. I'm not sure where you are at but, I don't think it ever really improves in the areas you are hoping it does. There is a long sequence as young Drake that I didn't care for. There is also an epilogue part that you play as well

I guess Uncharted 4 has been out long enough now to where people are going to start picking it apart more harshly. I respect differing opinions but I personally thought 4 smashes all of the older ones. I've beaten all 4 of them at least 3 times each (in January I did a full series playthrough on PS4 as well) and 4 is just head and shoulders above the rest. Loved the story, loved the character arcs, loved the set pieces and variety. They're all fantastic but 4 just felt so complete and polished.

All of the Uncharted games set the bar high that 4 just felt like more (and I was fine with that). I loved it and enjoyed the ride.

On the other hand, Uncharted 3...the only thing I remember is a cruise ship kinda boat level. I can't recall even the slightest story premise or anything else about it otherwise. I wasn't a fan of 3.

Life Is Strange {PC / Windows} 10/10
To quote Ron Simmons, "Damn!" Just f'n fantastic is how I'd describe this game. One of those rare story driven games where your choices really do matter, so you've gotta pick carefully. There's not too many ways I could think of on how this game could've been improved, but I do wish the episodes were a little shorter. In other games that are heavy on the story, like The Walking Dead and Until Dawn, I preferred it when each episode is around an hour long and I'd play through one episode per day. But in Life Is Strange each episode is closer to 3 hours long (or even longer if you're taking your time to hunt down everything to take photos of) and so I don't get to play an entire episode in one sitting. That's just a slight inconvenience for me though, it doesn't make the game any less great. Anything else is just a minor complaint, such as the lip movement is often out of sync when characters are talking. And speaking of characters talking, the voice acting is excellent. It feels like everything is being said naturally and not off a script. The writers and the voice actors both did a hell of a job.
I've just finished episode 4 and will try to play through the remainder of the story tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to it.

If you're a fan of golf like I am this is a must buy. I've played a lot of golf games in my life and this is probably my favorite. It's not arcadey like Tiger Woods, it's actually the closest thing to a real golf simulation I've ever played. I can't tell you how many times I've 3 putted from 30 feet away. It's frustrating (just like real golf). Graphics are solid, course designer is a ton of fun and I love online tournaments. It would have a higher score if it didn't crash so much but I'm sure they'll work out the kinks.

I just booted up Marvel: Ultimate Alliance again, on XB1 this time. While some of the graphics look dated in some areas, it still plays really well and the story feels right out of the comics with tons of cameos and characters to play as. I miss that kind of beat 'em up RPG, Diablo-esque camera game. I can still see myself giving this an 8/10 after completing it a 2nd time.

Yeah, it was a bit buggy on the 360. So far, luckily, I haven't experienced any issues with the XB1 port, but it's still early in the game. I'm only on Act 1. I 'd love a part 3 also, but in this day and age, since the MCU is on a "no X-men in our games" kick, it would most likely be without any X-Men characters, or characters they don't have the movie rights for, sadly.

was just thinking that, it would be lacking so many key characters it would hardly feel like a marvel game. marvel was my childhood, to see the state they are in now is so sad, its not even the same thing at all. thankfully DC is still killing it with their animated series and movies.

tekken 7, love it so far, if you have and it wanna match up lemme know. at first I was like ehhh they have gotten too far away but the more I play the more I like it, it retains enough feel from the old ones while feeling newer.

ghost recon wildlands, if you have friends that will take the RP and tactical element seriously this is a tremendously fun game.

Worse yet, they may replace all the characters from the new comics where all the characters are all changed.

yes, they would do like the already pretty much do anyway and just ignore 616, that is what made them and going away from that has alienated a lot of fans. MCU is awful to me, but I grew up with a very different and better marvel. give me games, cartoons and animated movies based on 616, the other is all awful.

I liked 90's Xmen, that's what I grew up with. What they've done recently is horrific. They'll learn though, and then they'll come back around after their audience has faded.

Finally had some VR time this evening:

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood (PSVR) - 9/10 - For what it is (on-rails shooter) it's stellar. I actually felt like my swivel chair was moving slower/faster when climbing/descending hills. Very odd feeling but crazy that I felt that way. This is a great game and one of the best as your virtual body extends out full arms. So when you aim someplace you see your arms and torso move which is nuts.

Star Wars: Battlefront -- VR Mission (PSVR) - 7/10 - I bought this game used for $5 just to download the free VR mission. It's limited but rather fun. My stomach dropped a few times when I was piloting erratically. But by the end it felt great and was a solid 15 minutes. As a full game it would need more variety and pacing but as an experiment it's a blast.

Allumette (PSVR film) - 10/10 - Unbelievable experience. It's a stop-motion short film (10-15 mins?) but since you can sit/stand and peer around, it's a crazy 3D experience. Everything is adorable and I was absolutely captivated. Will be checking out new VR film options like Ctrl next.

I thought the story, characters (except Fran and Balthier) were very boring. The Hunts were very frustrating as well. Music wasnt very strong neither. That being said, it was better than i remember it being when it debuted.

I do like the speed up option. More rpg remakes need this.

The score is fine. No beef with a 7/10. But the ZZZZZZ.... There is a good reason/excuse. Balthier was intended in its development to have been the main protagonist. Somehow, in its writing and development cycle it became less focused. Which is why you have this whack ass focus on Vaan and Penelope. Who are just the worst. So yes you are correct it seems to lack a clear story that is all too convoluted but that has been the status quo with the franchise since VII.

I find this game to be one of the most underrated in the series. The most underrated actually. It's the last FF I finished. It's also pretty much the DNA of FFXIV. I loved Matsuno worlds and design I love Ivalice so I have an affinity for it the game anyhow.

I disagree on the music I think its fantastic in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics and Brave Story Vagrant Story. I love the composition.

ALL RPG REMAKES NEED SPEED UP.

To each his own though absolutely. A lot of folks didn't love the game, its flawed certainly, so its understandable.

I agree with pretty much everything you've said, Karaiya. I don't love the story in XII because it isn't exactly original. I do like it well enough though because it's pretty much just Star Wars. What I do love is the world and the journey the characters go on together. That's the real hook for me. Sure, you have the usual convoluted Final Fantasy crap, but you don't have to sit through too many overly long story beats after the first few hours. As you journey from one corner of the Empire to another, the bits of story you do get are so few and far between that I cherished those moments. Especially because I absolutely adore the cast. Vaan is pretty much the only character I can do without, but I love Penelo so it's easy to tolerate him. Penelo, Ashe, Basch, Fran, and the main man Balthier are some of my favorite characters in the entire series. And I really like some of the supporting cast like Gabranth and Larsa.

FFXII gets a bum rap because it's a slow paced game that plays so differently from the other mainline FF games. Ivalice is huge and while I loved all the traveling back and forth, I know tons of people who hated it. I've heard a lot of people say it is too similar to an MMO and just isn't "fun". In fact, I don't have a single friend who played the original for more than a few hours. I've tried talking up all the improvements this remaster makes to the game, but they still aren't willing to give it another shot. It makes me so sad. It's such an underrated game and one of my favorite JRPGs of that generation.

being different from the other FF games that came before it was its blessing and curse all in one. I agree I love Ivalice and I love the music in this game. if somehow square could have two teams capable enough to make really good games, I wouldn't mind seeing mainline FFs continue the tradition of new worlds each time and a side series of games in ivalice, maybe even a new FF tactics.

I'm replaying Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 right now on the XB1. It's more fun than I remember. Almost finished with the pro registration Iron Man side then I'll replay it for the anti-registration Cap side. Feels like a solid 8 for me after re-playing it again 8 years later.

True, we would have have to accept the Inhumans in place for the X-Men. Yuck.

I believe it should. I got Juggernaut as a playable character right off the bat. I haven't searched yet for any other DLC, though.

Tales From The Borderlands {PlayStation 4} 7/10
I consider myself a fan of Borderlands (though I admit I haven't tried the pre-sequel yet), but when I heard about Telltale making a story based game on the Borderlands franchise, I wasn't sure how it would turn out. While I really enjoyed Borderlands and Borderlands 2, it wasn't so much for the story. With all the time I put into each of those games (even 100% completing the first Borderlands and all the DLC too) I couldn't tell you much of what was going on with the story. But, Telltale pulled it off. This game is fun. It is story driven, but it also has action scenes (via QTEs) and they nailed the humor you would expect from Borderlands. Having just finished Life Is Strange a couple of weeks ago though, I don't feel like quite a few of the choices I've made in this game really meant anything in the end. And...

Claptrap is awesome, but he was nowhere to be seen until the end of the last episode? Whyyyy...

I'm currently playing Shadow of Mordor too, on PC. I'm enjoying it, as formulaic as it is. I've played about 9 hours and am nearly 40% done. Some of the environmental geometry is annoying, because your character can't move around them well. My only real complaint is that enemies spawn again way, way too quickly. I was doing a stealth mission to kill 10 archers. One building had three, so I took them out, moved to another that had one, and before I got to the one, the other three had respawned already. This made it so I didn't have to get the rest if the heavily guarded fortress. But it's really annoying when you get surrounded and they just keep coming, whether the alarm is going or not. Best advice, just run. Everywhere. Makes things way more manageable.

Agreed. Getting stuck on every invisible corner when trying to sneak around is one of the worst parts. And having to press the combo buttons for a combat finisher four times before he will start to do it makes them not even worth trying. Simple hack/slack is simpler, so you end up not utilizing a good chunk of the games moves. While I love games with variety, this one is just all over the place. It wants to be a hybrid of Batman Arkham (any) and Assassin's Creed with some Infamous thrown in. Too much, considering they didn't perfect the programming for any aspect of it really. I liked Mad Max better. My favorite part is the "Sauron's Army" stuff. The hierarchy and promotions and linking of bodyguards to warchiefs and such.

It's the GOTY version for PS4.

Maybe going in with zero expectations has made it easy to overlook its flaws, or maybe it just feels really good to be in the Mass Effect universe for the first time in half a decade, but I am really, really enjoying Mass Effect Andromeda. It took me a couple of hours to get into it, but I love the characters, the interactions, my FemRyder, the combat...all of it really. I feel for the folks who bought it at launch because it seems the patches have fixed most of the issues I saw people complaining about. It's still a little janky, but it's easy for me to overlook minor imperfections when I'm really enjoying a game. Definitely going to be playing this and nothing else for the next month or so.

It runs horrible on PS4. The frequent texture popping, and the framerate dropping to a freeze, the animations are decades old and I could continue on. Its one of the worst optimized games this year.

I absolutely hate male Ryder, I shouldve chosen the female Ryder. It is unfortunate because I loved the default Sheppard in the previous games. He was so amazing that I never did use a custom character or the female version in any of the games.

That said, the game is pretty fun, just like the others were. I love that they brought back the boogie, I loved it in ME1 and I love it now. I still havent finish it, far from it. Ive been wating time just doing sidequests and I havent gotten bored yet so thats good. Id give it a 7 at most.

This makes me feel better about going back to it. I played through the finish of the story on the first planet Eos and put it down for persona 5 and haven't wanted to go back. Mass effect is one of my top 3 or 4 series ever so I was in on day one and was pretty let down. Glad to hear they have largely addressed the problems. It ran ok for me on x1, I've heard ps4 didn't run as well at launch.

Now to get my femryder back on the Suvi hunt... I mean habitable planet hunt

Edit...no..it's the Suvi hunt...ain't even gonna lie.

I'm borderline obsessed with Andromeda right now. About 80 hours in and I'm getting close to the end game. It's a real shame that so many think it's a bust. After a dry start and some patched bugs it becomes the same good ol' Mass Effect we all love. It doesn't quite have the bombastic urgency of the OT, it's a slow burn exploration game. But it kinda reminds me of Fallout in that the main quest is just a framework, but all of the little sidestories are where the meat is and what makes it so interesting.
