I got the remastered trilogy on Switch and have been having quite a bit of fun with it.

Crash 1 certainly is the meanest, though. Crash 2 and 3 are remarkably less difficult, and also quite a bit better designed overall.

I was a Saturn person back in the day, followed by Dreamcast and then bitterness at Sony when that system was discontinued, so I didn't really play Crash until the mid-2000s. I don't really have the nostalgia factor for it, but Crash 2 and especially 3 hold up quite well in my opinion. The first one is OK, and I'm glad they have it on there, but it is way fiddly.

As for DKC on the SNES, I never found them appealing to look at or play. Just collectathons featuring trash enemy design, hideous pre-rendered cg sprites, and overall generic level designs. Maybe if they had been hand drawn I would have enjoyed them more. I've repeatedly tried them in later years, and I still don't particularly care for them. The one good point I guess is how many secret areas you can find. But most of those are pretty generic too (though it is fund to find them). I really like the newer ones on Wii and Wii U, though, so go figure.

I don't care if I die 1000 times in a platformer as long as the deaths are fair and not the result of bad controls or terrible game design, but I don't think I died once as a result of my own mistakes, every single time I died it was total BS and that's what makes these kinds of game not very fun to me.

My friend quit after she got to this stage and I can completely understand why. Even 20 years later it's quite brutal. I had to cheat and use the side ropes to make it thru. Such wonky level design in this stage.

How did I fudging know it was the Turtle Bridge stage before even clicking on it. I didn't even know the stage's name and I knew soon as that loading screen was over I'd see a bridge and clouds.

edit: Oh wait, no, it's just an identical looking stage with something else other than turtles. Hilarious. Also they keep cutting the video to points where they actually cleared that part of the stage

There is MORE than one stage with that design too. I gutted it out for Game of the Month. dead face

I started Marvel's Spider-Man Sony PlayStation 4 Pro last night. So far it's about a 9/10. Getting around NYC is awesome. The combat is fun but getting somewhat used to the controls is hindering me and I've died a few times where I don't think I would've if I had a better grip on countering. I went back to Arkham controls when it's similar but not exactly the same. Altogether though I'm really digging it and I look forward to playing it more. And maybe I'll find the puddle that everyone was doging about a couple months before.

I was dying in spiderman then when I stopped trying to play like arkham I starting doing much better. inclination is def to play like shadow or mordor or arkham but once I let that go im doing much better, thinking about what I want to do, using the environment and learning what moves work best against which enemies has been a big difference, arkham and mordor condition you to just play defensively and wait for that counter icon but its better to get offensive against certain enemy types and use aerial combo to build focus for finishers, and once you get a few levels getting some more abilities and gadget stuff helps immensely as well.

Yes this was yet another stage that caused many controllers to be broken lol I could not do the jumping over those fire pits myself unless I had a voodoo face to absorb the hit and give me a second chance to get across to the next checkpoint. So damn aggravating. Naughty Dog were quite the a-holes back in the 90's.
dustin11
Double Gold Good Trader Global Trader - willing to trade internationally This user is on the site NOW (6 minutes ago)
* 3-Dec(#14)
The very last part of the stage where you had to bounce on 3 fire things was infuriating. No matter what I did I would get hit and die. There were even times when the fire wouldn't even make direct contact with me and I would still burn up. I thought I had that part finally all figured out, I would get the mask, take the hit from the final fire bouncy thing, then jump off to safety. I tried that and after I got hit from those fire things it stopped my upward momentum entirely so I ended up falling to my death because I couldn't get the height to make to jump to the next platform. If I wasn't so stubborn I would have quit right then and there.

The company who did this remake should do one of BUG! and BUG! 2. Those were much better 2.5D platformers from the same era.

Yeah the one nice thing is this was a proper remake and very well done. There were also some quality of life improvements such as the game pretty much constantly saving instead of the horrid save system of the PS1 version.
TalonJedi87
Double Gold Good Trader Has Written 4 Reviews
3-Dec(#16)
Right, they did add more checkpoints in the remaster because the company who remade it were not as masochistic as Naughty Dog was back in the day and actually empathized for our frustration and did what they could with the time they were given to remaster the trilogy. It would have been nice if they were able to fix the wonky and stiff controls like Toys for Bob were able to do in the Spyro remastered trilogy. I guess there were some time constraints there to get Crash out on time.

3-Dec(#17)
Yeah, I have to give the devs some credit for how well they handled the remake, this terrible game definitely wasn't a fault of their own and they stayed true to the original games while giving them a fresh coat of paint. Its just a shame that their material they were working with was such garbage. Sypro looks like a lot of fun though so I gotta give that one a spin here soon.

Yeah, same here. I never played the original Spyro's back in the day but I do hear from even overly analytical critics like Jim Sterling that Spyro Reignited is a grand ol' time.

Shu {Nintendo Switch} 7/10
This is a pretty fun little 2D platformer. I didn't know much about it before buying it, I just knew that it was cheap (on sale for around $6.50) and I kind of was drawn to the art style of the graphics in the screenshots and trailer (it automatically stood out to me just for not using 8-bit graphics like so many other indie games in the eShop do).

The game's difficulty level is not high at all. You start each level with 5 lives and each level has multiple checkpoints and each time you reach a checkpoint your life count will refill back to 5. So as long as you are the least bit competent at 2D platformers, you might not see a single game over screen. The controls are perfectly fine except once in a while the wall jumping didn't seem as good as in NSMB games. The music is pretty good as well, it sounds very relaxing but gets faster during chase segments.

Each level also has a ton of collectibles. I get that they are added to try to get you to replay levels, but there is such a thing as too many (the first level alone has over 400). You don't get to upgrade anything by collecting these things, so they're pretty pointless unless you just enjoy going for 100% completion.
Another way they want you to replay levels is to speed run them and beat a dev's set time. If you're like me and are not really interested in speed running or going after all of those collectibles and are fine with just beating each level once and then moving on to the next game, you're looking to get roughly 2 or 3 hours out of this game. I'm very close to beating the game now and while it's probably not something I'll replay anytime soon, I'd still recommend giving it a shot the next time it's on sale if you like 2D platformers.

Quake II PC / Windows - 5/10?

I love Quake, both multiplayer and single player it's one of the best games ever. It's this dark, gothic, medieval lava-filled castle game that's like nothing else. I could never get into Quake II and going back to it for maybe the 5th time I still can't. None of the weapons have any oomph (they feel like the default Quake shotgun at best) and the setting is generic space marine in brown hallways. I know this game wasn't originally developed to be Quake II, but it's so painfully average let alone "not Quake" that I think I'm giving up on it yet again.

I loved Q1&II, but I played Quake II before I (and, basically, the day it came out). They're both way better with mods nowadays.

PS VR is the best entry point and it's tons of fun. But you will never shake the "I see the graphic issues" thing. But it's still more interesting than a standard game and I really enjoyed that about it.

Once you get used to it though, you'll feel that it's different and great, but not better than just playing AAA titles on a UHD tv. It'll feel like a fun novelty and I miss it but I never played any game for very long.

Its a gigantic map where you choose where you want to go and along the way you have to complete battles to progress further. You have a skill tree for our character and get skill points to spend, little mods that you can add to your character too which really give this fighter a ton customization option. I think there are like 1600 mods or something and each one gains experience and gets stronger when you have them equipped at the end of a battle, or you can just give them EXP items if they're low level and you want to get them stronger without having to equip a low level mod. Its a really cool. Think Melee's single player but more "choose your own adventure", and with RPG elements, plus a massive map.

You start out with Kirby then you unlock other characters as you progress further. Marth is my main, and I unlocked him within the first 30 minutes or so. Once a character has been unlocked then you're free to use them whenever you want.

Yeah it's ridiculous how deep and structured the adventure mode is. I'm very impressed they took the time out to make it so intriguing and addictive. Astro Bot: Rescue Mission {PlayStation 4} 10/10

The killer app PlayStation VR needed has arrived. If you enjoy 3D platformers even only a little bit, you need this game in your life.
I haven't completed the game yet, but I'm up to the 4th world now (out of 5 I think) and I already know when I beat the game I will go back and 100% complete it. This is not hyperbole when I say that I rank this up there as one of the best 3D platformers I've ever played, right alongside even the sacred Mario titles that pretty much own the genre.

This game has obvious influences from 3D Super Mario titles and I'd say the "cuteness" rivals even Yoshi and Kirby titles, but what exactly is there left to do in platformers that hasn't been done before? Even Super Mario Galaxy was accused of "borrowing" ideas from Ratchet & Clank. It's like there's not much new things to do, there are only ways to improve on what has been done before, and adding VR is definitely a way to improve. I never would have thought 3D platformers could benefit from VR this much. Prior to playing this I feel there hasn't been a major "wow" factor in this genre since Super Mario 64 which was 22 years ago. Until now.

A swivel chair is pretty much required because the levels play out in front of you, behind you, to the left and right of you and even above and below you, so you're going to be looking around everywhere to keep track of the little robot dude as you're controlling him and look for all the collectibles (actually I feel like there should more things to collect, but I'm glad they didn't overdo it like Super Mario Odyssey did).

Sony has a hit on their hands with this game, character, IP, whatever. I hope they don't screw it up by letting it sit idle until people forget about it like they have had a habit of doing in the past (PaRappa for example). I want need more of this game, I don't care if it's just an extra world or two added via DLC or a full on sequel (I'd prefer a full sequel though), I just don't want this game to end.
This is my 2018 GotY. I haven't played RDR2, GoW or Spider-Man but I don't think they'd have the same impact on me that this did.

Yeah, one of the two games I wanted from LRG and it released without me knowing. Guess I'll get the digital when it's dirt cheap. I think I'm gonna sell Cosmic Star Heroine and ditch LRG completely. I just don't have time to constantly keep up with their random releases.

Digital Pinball Necronomicon 9.5/10

Still the GOAT pinball video game. @DefaultGen mentioned some PS2 trash (that I tried and quickly wondered why I wasn't playing Necro) awhile back which got me in the pinball mood so I've been jamming on this again lately. This is the only pinball game you ever need. Though Lost Gladiators is close to the same thing. It's not as good but it is much cheaper and still like a solid 8-9 and better than anything else.

Overcooked! 2 {Nintendo Switch} 9/10
This is some of the most fun I've had with any multiplayer game on Switch. I always thought the first Overcooked! looked fun, but the fact it only supported local multiplayer is why I decided to skip it, but they added online to this one and it was a wise decision.

It's such a fun and chaotic multiplayer game. It's you and up to three friends in a kitchen preparing food and then serving it to customers and I know that might sound lame, but maybe you've gotta play it to realize how good it is. When playing online on the Switch version it's a bummer that you don't have a way to communicate with your partners outside of little pre-made emotes/phrases you can have your character say. That's not an issue though if you have the option of playing with everyone in the same room.

Like I said, it's a great multiplayer game. If you're looking for a single player game though, don't waste your time with this.

Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice (X1X) 6/10

Just added to Game Pass a few days ago so I figured I would give it a shot. Not really too impressed with the gameplay, pretty barebones, slow, and boring. Story is okay, but I'm not really into these narrative driven "emotional" gritty 3rd person games which have become so popular this generation. I play through 1 chapter at a time with the reward of playing Smash Brothers once I get to the end of whichever chapter I'm currently on. From a technical standpoint it a very impressive game. The visuals are great (playing on the X so I chose 60fps mode but 4k with HDR it looked great), and the voice overs and acting are all top notch, very well done on NT's behalf. I just don't really find the game to be very fun and there is very little that makes me want to turn on my console and play this right after work. I'll still finish it up because of the easy achievements, but its really a slog right now.

Smash Brothers Ultimate 9.9/10

Most important thing to me with games is that they're fun, and Smash Bros delivers on that like only Nintendo seems to be able to. World of Light has an insane amount of content, and thats only a small portion of the game. There has never been another fighter with even 1/3rd of the content that Smash Bros brings to the table, and everything they did with this game feels like a labor of love and not just thrown in for filler. Most of the game is a nod to gaming in general, not just Nintendo franchises but even then Nintendo gives the same amazing treatment to all the 3rd party content that they do their own 1st party IPs. Its pretty incredible what Nitnendo has done with this game. Its only not a 10/10 in my book because some of the fights in WoL are total BS.

Escape Doodland {Nintendo Switch} 6/10
Just another mediocre endless runner.
I do like the art style and actually give the game an extra point just for that, but it doesn't really have much else going for it.

You're always being chased by some big monster thing and you have to out run it. As you are running, there are two kinds of collectibles for you to...collect. One is beans, which you use as a currency to buy extra characters and power-ups in the shop (you can replay earlier levels to keep collecting them over and over) and the other is matches. So your character has the ability to use those matches and light his farts. You can use a fart to temporarily stun the monster that's chasing you, or use a boost fart to jump higher/farther than the normal jump button allows. As you collect beans in each level you will be awarded golden beans which you will use towards unlocking later levels.

I died a lot on most of the levels, but that shouldn't come as a surprise from a game whose only difficulty choices are "hard" or "harder". I'm up to level 10 now which seems to be the last level, but I admit that a big part of the reason I made it that far was from dying and restarting levels enough times to where I memorized when I'm supposed to jump and when not to.

Just to add a little bit of variety to spice things up a bit, some levels morph into segments that play like flappy bird. I wasn't a fan of that and am just glad it doesn't happen in every level.

I find this genre has gotten very stale, but if you're in the mood for this type of game there are better alternatives to pick. I don't recommend this over something like bit.trip Runner 3, but I still think that game is overpriced for what it is.

Spyro Trilogy (X1) 9.25/10

I've only played Spryo 1 so far but it was a lot of fun. Very easy and straight forward but also very enjoyable. Only issue I've come across so far have been some weird glitches like falling through walls and enemies glitching out all weird after being killed. Not game breaking though and I find them more humorous than anything. The dash system is a bit ghetto and I often find myself dashing the wrong direction because its hard to gauge where you're going to go once you start running. Also not a fan of the super dash game play element. Its really weird and often times more of an annoyance than anything. Still all minor gripes though that won't deter me from enjoying the overall experience. I fished Spyro 1 in about 7.5 hours with 120% collected and all 1000 achievements. Speaking of achievements, I really like how they're structures in this game. They abstained from the typical "collect all of these" objectives and instead put a little mission to complete in each stage. Still kind of amounts to collect 100% of everything, but its designed in a way in which is less of a grind.

Spyro over Crash and it's not even close. Crash has always been more popular and I never understood why. The Spyro games are some of the best 3D platformers ever made, imo.

I think Crash may have been marketed better than Spyro back in the day. Crash, to me, was always more for the nostalgia as the platforming was very frustrating at times, uneven and some stages were downright impossible without cheating. Spyro, on the other hand, I can't wait to play. I only played the demo in the 90's on one of those discs that came with the PSX magazine. I never got fully into it back in the PS1 era but I heard nothing but good things and it looks like that Toys for Bob dev really gave it the overhaul it needed for a true remaster.

I want to grab Spyro but I need to clear some other games first. I've actually played some of the newer games in the series but not the first three.

Yeah, its not even remotely close as to which game is better and which one I prefer. Crash was a horrible gaming experience to where Spryo was very enjoyable. It had better game play, better controls and a lot more charm, pretty much everything you want out of a platformer. I think I gave Crash a 3/10 and 2 of those points were purely because the effort that went into the remaster, if it wasn't for that I would have given it a 1 because it was legit almost unplayable. I think the popularity surrounding Crash was because he was "extreme" and catered more towards teenagers. I always found the marketing behind those games irritating and like it was trying way too hard to be cool, kind of like Poochie from the Simpsons.

I'm a huge fan of 3D platforming games and Spryo isn't as good at the likes of Banjo Kazooie, but its still much better than more recent releases like Yooka-Laylee and A Hat in Time. When platformers get too complex and convoluted then I don't find them to be as fun as when games have more straight forward game play elements.

Momonga Pinball Adventures {Nintendo Switch} 5/10
I give these dudes credit for trying to do something new in the pinball genre, but, ya know, doing something new doesn't automatically mean that it's going to be fun to play.

They made a pinball game where the ball is replaced by a flying squirrel and they made a back story but I don't care enough to follow it all. It's something about evil owls.

If you're a serious pinball fan, I don't think this game was made with you in mind. The pinball physics are not very good. That's pretty much what caused all of my game overs. But on the other hand, it wasn't that big of a deal having to restart because the levels are short, not very difficult, and there aren't a lot of them (I have only 3 levels left to go and I've barely put an hour into this).

The graphics are nothing special, but they are probably fine for kids, who I assume they were aiming for with this game. And the music, there is only one song in the game that just loops over and over as you play. I got to around 5 levels in before I turned the music off in the options menu.

They expect you to replay levels with extra goals added, but once I complete the story mode I'm done with this game and I don't plan on returning to it anytime soon. Supposedly the game is easy to get achievments/trophies in, but that doesn't mean anything to me playing it on Switch.

That's unfortunate, I like pinball but I rarely check out new pinball video games because I'm happy with the old ones I have. I did try one on Vita recently that was okay. Tons of DLC tables though.

Inb4 @DefaultGen says all pinball video games are awful. Something something metal balls.

Momonga is really easy and short IIRC from when I played on iOS. For adventurey pinball I'd go with Flipnic or Sonic Spinball. Also all pinball games are awful, play with metal balls.

Spyro 2 8/10

I'm not really liking some of the new gameplay mechanics so far. I don't really care for the more open world feel of the game or the little missions in each stage or that you can't complete a stage 100% your first time through but have to come back once you've leaned an ability further ahead in the game. Its still a lot of fun, but these extra added gameplay elements make it a little less enjoyable than Spryo 1 was, and having stages inside of stages inside of stages makes the overworld more convoluted and confusing to navigate.

Must still be a pretty incredible game if it's getting an 8/10, that read like a 6 or 7, pending positive comments, otherwise more of a 5

Its still pretty good but it was kind of a surprise to see a bit of a different approach than S1 took and it takes a bit of getting used to but I still enjoy the time I have spent with it so far. I'm still pretty early in the game so the score has the chance to go up or down some depending if these new elements are something that I can get used to or not. I'm trying to play these for what it is rather than what I hoped it was going to be, I think the game will end up being much more enjoyable that way.

My son has been playing Spyro 1 and is about 20% through it. It looks and plays well but the level design certainly shows it's age IMO. Very haphazard. And I know the jump and glide is important but gosh darn there are a lot of ledges and outcroppings just a literal hair out of reach of a normal standing jump...way too many. "Hey, go up that step"...."I can't".

Yeah, there some parts where that issue came into play, but it didn't really stop me from enjoying the game since most of the time you can run around pretty unhindered.

Shovel knight PlayStation 3 5/10

I do not get the love for this game honestly. I've played about 3 hours of it and it just feels meh to me. Most of the levels (besides the scenery) feel like you are doing the same thing over and over. Collecting treasure, buying upgrades, defeating the boss, repeat. And maybe it's just me feeling like platformers have the same feeling nowadays. This game doesn't really know what it wants to be, are you megaman, castlevania or what? Again maybe it's just me but the controls feel clunky at times and that will lead to your death. It's just not for me I guess. Wasted 20 for nothing.

You're definitely in the minority on this one. One of the reasons so many people love Shovel Knight is that it takes some of the best elements of classic platforming found in Mega Man, Castlevania, Duck Tales, etc. and also incorporates a number of things that have been learned about game design over the past 30 years.
