WHO DARES DISTURB MY SLUMBER oh it's just you dorks.

I just hate seeing people throw their money at crappy ports that don't work right because DotEmu won't go and fix the games like they should. If you want to spend the money, okay. But... I warned you. I WARNED YOU. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

... can you tell I haven't slept much the past week

Edit: Serious reply, Karateka is now -published- by DotEmu and it was a fine game before they got their hands on it; Pang Adventures was developed by Pastagames and is pretty good, except for the usual bugs that won't be fixed because DotEmu won't pay for the patches. Sanitarium was buggy to begin with, but I haven't heard anything -bad- about the Steam version.

DotEmu is a lot better about supporting their games now, they just refuse to fix their old crap. It's gotten to a point where SNK outright replaced some of their crap NeoGeo ports on Steam and GOG with proper Code Mystics developed versions.

Yeah, anytime I go back and re-play SMB1 I end up following it up with SMB3 and SMW, at least. The last time I did it, I also threw in LL. I'm not a huge SMB2 fan, so I don't replay that one very often.

Hopefully not much more than $180 since that's the retail new price off their website and it's available for purchase. Two potential buyers, btw.

I had to go for the NT Mini because there is no guarantee they'll ever make a cheaper NES. They might just move on to developing new systems. And I became an FPGa SUPER FAN, like overnight. So I can't pass up this chance.

FPGa is the ultimate emulation. It's like an NES chip inside the system itself. So it is incredibly accurate. It is expensive because it has metal trim. And build in DAC which lets you output to composite to CRTs. It basically has all of the fancy upscalers BUILT IN to the system. The SNES and Genesis ones they made took out all of the bells and whistles.

Now I don't need all of that stuff. But I'm such a fan of FPGa I ordered one myself. Basically you do a simple easy jailbreak, and can play games off an SD card. So you can play the entire NES library, in a super accurate way, with 1080p output, scanline and tons of scaling options. At high res and accurate control and sound.

And of course you can play your carts too. So this is the best way to play your carts because of the incredible graphics upscaling. You can output to current gen TVs without the need of all the upscaler bulk.

Dont let him fool you, he bought an AVS to hold him over until HIS arrives. I think his point is you're going full ham on "authentic" when there's basically absolutely nothing authentic about FPGA in the slightest. And the NT FPGA isn't without it's faults, making its price questionable at best imo.

Like, how much do you REALLY need to spend to play Nintendo games? I'm playing NES and Famicom carts on a handheld LCD screen no bigger than 8 inches with a composite source coming off a generic Clone board, you'd probably barf but it's like, $70, lol

I did ask for a cancelation for the NT mini, ultimately I agree with you guys $500 is too much for a clone NES or whatever you want to call it. Doesn't change how much I love my Mega SG and Super NT though! And I'm fully on board the analogue Pocket when it hits.

By the way, they have new color style SN30 8bitdo's due in June. So that hints to me that they will probably have more US and EUR style Super NT's restocks this Summer. I'll have a black Super Nt and black SN30 for sale at that time.

Rank determines number of points (i.e. first choice is one point, second choice is two points, etc.). No rank equals six points. Lowest score wins, like golf but nerdier.

The takeaway is this: AVS is only $200 new, it's 720p, and it's more than good enough for the price point and is the best and most bang for your buck NES purchase.

Nt mini for $500 is ridiculously priced but the aftermarket prices are even more insane. But it's got a ton more options like analog out(for those who wants/needs it), and ability to load directly off of SD card.

It's even compatible with other 8 bit systems via SD card loading, I don't think there are adapters for actual carts.

Analogue got smart with the snes and genesis ones. $200 is right in a lot of people's comfort zones. And it's got everything I personally need. 10800 output, sd card saving, roms, and scanline/scaling options.

Accuracy of non-standard chips is only as good as we're able to understand them. Some smaller chips are simple logic gate chips that are documented and have known functions. Custom chips on the other hand. Think the PPU, custom cartridge mappers, etc. they don't usually document how they work internally.

So some of these chips have been re-implemented into a hardware description language based on the reverse engineering that existing software emulators have done. Not knowing the spec sheets of these chips, we're mostly guessing as to what set of logic gates has to happen when the chip on this pin receives this signal. The exception to this is the cases in which chips have been "decapped" to reveal their inner workings. From there, you can certainly be more accurate, but it's a pretty large task to do that for everything.

I admit I know nothing of the tech specs. I can only go by personal experience and from what I read. But to me it feels like the controller response is immediate, and the sound quality has more fullness and depth to it compared to most emulators.

It's probably not 100%. But it's the closest to actual hardware you'll get.

That's a lot of it. For the most part you're cutting out even the operating system layer. On the MiSTer, some cores do have direct to FPGA input controller registers which aside from any video scaling on HDMI out is about as direct as you can get.

Of course, og systems with everdrives is a great option. And something I'm looking into for a few remaining old systems.

I'll continue collecting for PS1, PS2, and Switch. And go everdrives or analogues for other systems. Probably do a N64 everdrive at some point.

I don't have the space or the budget to fill shelves, so I play most games on flash cartridges and purchase the original cartridge or disc once I beat the game.

I make exceptions for obscenely expensive games (e.g. Neo Geo) and games that I don't actually have the means of playing (no Dreamcast games, for example, since my drive was replaced by an ODE).

I've also been breaking my own rule with DS games. I've had bad luck with DS flash carts not coming back from a resume, likely because they're sensitive to nudges.

USB GD-ROM

I know there's a supposed timebomb, but I have the updated firmware if I'm ever affected by it.

yes That's what I have. I had some issues with it initially (GDIs not loading), but got it sorted by switching to a different rom set.

For me the space money allows for some nice DS collecting. But when it comes to the old SNES, Sega CD, N64 stuff. I think Everdrives are way to go! I've already started 7th Saga on my Super NT and I don't see myself stopping. So glad I can finally just play some of those games I've been waiting to start.

Let's get real here, people picked SMB as the game to not play this month. Just like Stickers 1812.

This was me. Your post said to PM you our rankings, so I did, but then everyone else posted here. I wasn't wanting it to be private.

Also, I didn't know rank determines number of points in the scoring, and that no rank is 6 points, like Ren said. In that case, my vote would have simply been this:

1. Shantae
2. Wario Land 3

You were the only one who did it right, everyone else is just lazy.

Do you mean the PM part, or ranking ALL of the games?

Not ranking all of them gives your game(s) of choice an advantage, since you're giving less points to all of the others.

Also reading more into election science, score voting is better than ranked choice voting, especially for a situation where many people don't vote for all 6 games. We'll switch to this next month, I think it will be good.

https://rangevoting.org/

Basically, everyone gives every game a 1-9 rating, the highest average wins. If you don't score a particular game, your score isn't factored into the average.

It's ranked choice, not point based. Basically, everyone's first choice is considered only. If there is a majority, that game wins. Otherwise, the one with the lowest amount of votes (first choice votes) is removed from everyone's list and the election starts over. The score based voting above will eliminate some needless complexity or confusion here.
