Five more days, so I'll go ahead and start a thread. This is probably the most excited I've ever been for a Mario game. Anyone else?

from that ive seen these are some of the moves you need them detached for. but a couple things ive seen have seen said out of 500+ moons they have needed the extra controls to get like 2 of them, so sounds like you can play how you want almost all the time

To you folks that have issues with 3D Mario - is it just 3D Mario, or 3D platformers in general? Are there any you enjoy?

I know it sounds like I "hate" 3d Mario a lot of times, but I don't hate it, 3d platformers just aren't my fav thing. I did like the jak and daxter trilogy quite a bit but I don't know if id actually call them 3d platformers? the first one maybe was?

I don't have issues with 3D Marios. 3D World was great, and both Galaxies were excellent.

3D Platformers for me. Just something about them is not fun to me.

I prefer the single player of Odyssey over the single player of 3DWorld, but when played with 4 local players, 3Dworld is still my favorite overall Mario experience. I haven't beat Odyssey yet though.

Is there any moon for collecting a specific amount of coins? What happens when you collect all the special coins in a world? I got 50/50 in the first world but didn't notice if a new moon appeared because of this.

I've only collected all purple coins in one or two worlds, I actually don't remember if I got a moon for it, but I don't think I did. Maybe because the worlds I did it in only had 50 each instead of the usual 100.

If you don't get anything I'm not sure what motivation there is to collect them. There must be something. In the second world you can buy stuff with them, but only the coins from that world. So what were the 50 for in the first?

The purple coins are required to buy everything in the game. Each world has a store where you can buy stuff with regular and purple coins. Purple coins buy outfits, hats, stickers (for the ship) and statues (for the ship). You need all purple coins to buy all purple coin items. You need an assload of regular coins to buy all outfits/hats; one outfit (the priciest I've seen) alone is 9,999 coins. More outfits/hats get released for purchase as you unlock more moons.

I got the music notes on first try, but took a few attempts to get through that area for the second moon. You just have to make use of the brake button.

Yeah, I readjusted myself 4 or 5 times in the middle of the straight note line to readjust myself, and I still had time before the timer expired. Maybe try that strategy. I am really bad at jaxi and the brake adjusting really helped me to get my barring.

That's what I meant, Jaxi. It was in the desert when you ride the Jaxi down into the pyramid in the area with the purple poison stuff. I could not get him to line up for the life of me, and I was using the brake. The second one farther into that section was pretty easy, but that's probably because I had been working on my Jaxi skills for half an hour.

I got about 200ish? maybe? But I'm kinda bummed there is no easy way to find the final few purple coins without a bowser amibo. Kinda hoping for like a $2 DLC that helps you find the remaining coins. I might hold off on moon collecting til something like that happens.

So, I know I said BOTW was GOTY earlier...

but, I finished the game yesterday and...

When I got to the Mushroom Kingdom, it brought back so much nostalgia... from finding Yoshi on the roof, to the sea creature in the lake, then doing all of the bosses in the various areas of the kingdom... I loved it. Then I bought the SM64 costume. I think they should've given us the entire Mario 64 HD game AFTER you beat Odyssey. That would've been a great surprise...

However, the story line was great and I felt like it was kind of short in a way... and a bit easy (would've liked a harder difficulty.

Definitely enjoyed the game all the way through (and after). I can see why everyone thinks it's GOTY and I think HD remakes could 100% stem from this game as Nintendo wanted to show off the system's true power. I take my initial vote back and give it to Odyssey... super fun game and it's definitely Super Mario 64 part 2.

I'm also going for 100%. After playing last night I'm around 210 moons. I finished the main objectives of the Seaside Kingdom, but I still have my exploring to do before moving on. I chose that one before the Snow Kingdom, so I'll go there next. Getting all of the purple coins is going to be tough. I finished my thorough exploring of the Metro Kingdom last night and ended up with 98/100, sigh...

Those of you who are going for 100%, are you going to use Amiibos and/or Hint Toad to help find them? Using Amiibos seems kind of lame, but with Hint Toad being built into the game, it seems ok to use him. I'll still try to find as many as I can on my own, but once I'm stuck on a few I'll probably start getting hints.

I believe I found all but 3 in the Cap Kingdom as well. That one drove me crazy because the Cap Kingdom really isn't that big. I went through it 2 more times, searching everywhere, and still couldn't find them. I'm starting to wonder if some purple coins can't be reached until the additional moons are added later in the game.

The only Kingdoms I've found all of the purple coins in my initial search are Cascade, Lake, and Wooded.

it's either the moon you buy in the hat store, the hint art that you get a moon in another world, or a picture portal from another world to an innaccessable area in mushroom kingdom world.

I've been waiting for more people to try the mini-games! I only played the jump-rope and volleyball games enough to get the moons, but I did put a little more effort into getting a solid time on the RC Car game. If I had gotten my best lap on all 3 laps, my time would be 22.xx.

Getting the power moon in the 2D section of the Mushroom Kingdom is a pain in the ass. I breezed through all the 2D sections in the other worlds, but this one is just pissing me off. I really dislike being forced to use an analog stick to control a 2D character, it just doesn't feel right. I think the Joy-Cons not having a proper d-pad is going to affect my enjoyment of Super Mario Maker when that eventually comes out on Switch.

8bitdo has a couple of reasonably priced solid options. Nintendo has a wired pro-style controller for $25-30. There are more and more mods/cases that add a d-pad. Or pay the assload for a pro.

If I get SF cheap I'm going 8bitdo. Still hoping N or 3rd party's release cheap retro joycons with a d-pad as the main alongside their online/VC service. They can drop the HD rumble and IR ports.

I actually just discovered those two yesterday. Do you get moons for reaching 100 on both of them? Volleyball will just take practice, but how the hell did you get 150+ on the jump rope? I think I got up to 40 or so.

Yeah, you get a moon much earlier on, then another at 100. Jump rope I just found a good rhythym. I thought I was going to go much further, not sure how I messed it up. The world records for these games are ridiculous.

Stupid you can't turn off motion controls all together. Was planning on playing some while on a treadmill, nope.

I just got to New Donk City and the jump rope today. What a cool level! I spent a lot of time jumping around rooftops finding purple coins and stars, then explored the ground a bit and found the jump rope game. Got to 100 after a couple tries, topping out at 135. Gave it one more go and got 435! I just got in a good rhythm. I checked the world record scores and they're unbelievable. The top one is 55,555. That would take like 10 hours I think. U don't know if there's a way to cheat or some guy programmed something to hit the button, but that doesn't seem remotely possible.

Can you pause the game while doing this? I haven't got to this part yet. If so then maybe I can see someone doing this for an hour at a time. But even then I imagine someone has some programmable turbo controller. They could even set up a robot to press the button, I'd imagine even those simple lego sets could get the job done.

You can pause it, but it's nigh impossible to keep your timing after resuming. I paused it once when my eight-month-old yelled out from her nap, then immediately biffed it when I resumed (luckily was only at 30 or so).

I actually thought that's where the game was going, and was disappointed it didn't happen.

When the Toad asked me to come back wearing the SM64 suit, I thought the non-HD classic Super Mario 64 port was going to be hidden behind that pipe. I enjoyed the secret SM64-style chamber, but I really wish they had given us a port of the entire game. I would much rather have that as an epilogue than a thousand more moons spread across the world.

Nice! I've been wanting to re-visit the jump-rope and volleyball mini-games and try to improve my scores, but I can't tear myself away from progressing through the kingdoms. A friend of mine got just over 1000 on jump-rope, I might try to top that whenever I go back to it.

I didn't think about just how long it would take to reach that score...that's crazy!

I finished up the Seaside and Snow Kingdoms last night, and I'm about halfway done with the Luncheon Kingdom. My son beat Bowser over the weekend, he's so proud of himself. This is the first full game he's beaten completely on his own.

You need some kind of Jedi reflexes to get to 100 for that 2nd power moon in that jump rope challenge, haha. I can't get past like 65 myself so I gave up for now. I can't believe how some people in the leaderboards top that challenge at over 55k jumps. Metro Kingdom was by far the best kingdom I played so far. That musical retro number at the end was amazing. I'm on the Snow Kingdom now. I just do not want this game to end.

Before the game came out, I wasn't excited about the Metro Kingdom at all. It just wasn't appealing to me for a Mario game to have you running around in a realistic city. Now that I've played it, I really enjoyed the overall objectives/story of the kingdom, that aspect was a lot of fun. But I really didn't care for the exploration too much. It was kind of a pain trying to get to the tops of the buildings, and making sure you checked every single one, not to mention each side of each building. The Wooded Kingdom is my favorite kingdom so far.

I still think Metro Kingdom was a swing and a miss save for the ending, which may have been my favorite moment in the entire game. Otherwise, the whole "Mario in a real city" thing didn't vibe well for me and found it to be the most boring area, exploration-wise.

I'd rank the kingdoms

1. Wooded Kingdom
2.

Mushroom

Kingdom
3. Sand Kingdom
4. Metro Kingdom
5. Seaside Kingdom
6. Luncheon Kingdom
7. Bowser's Kingdom
8. Lake Kingdom
9. Snow Kingdom
10. Cascade Kingdom
11. Lost Kingdom
12. Moon Kingdom

My rankings might change as I keep exploring the post-game, but I think it's safe to say the Wooded Kingdom is my favorite. Seaside Kingdom might go up. It's not as imaginative as most of the other kingdoms, but I keep going back to it to explore. It's a really cool area.

Now, as for the mini-kingdoms, I'd rank them:

1. Cap Kingdom
2. Ruined Kingdom
3. Cloud Kingdom
4. Dark Side of the Moon
5. Dark(er) Side of the Moon

To be honest, I'm not a fan of the Moon Kingdoms at all. It's a disappointing unlockable, but that doesn't take away from all the fun to be had elsewhere during the post-game.

I'm digging the Dark Side (don't know what the Darker Side is yet). The moon-gravity Broodals gauntlet and some of the linear platforming levels there are the toughest parts of the game I've seen. I love the exploration, but also like when Nintendo gives us a sweet platforming challenge.

I love a good platforming challenge, and I don't mind the fact that I haven't been able to beat the Dark Side gauntlet yet. However, it is straight up frustrating that when you die, you spawn at the other side of the electric wire, and you have to sprint your way through the wire and through the cave to get back to the gauntlet. That's not a challenge, just a tedious way to stretch your time in between attempts at the gauntlet.

@bonham2 lol was it that close?? I thought it was a couple tenths of a second.

@TerrHeel That was my third try! First try was just figuring out the mechanics, second try I got my triple moon but was 1 second slower than bonham, so I tried once more and beat his time. My best lap was 19-something, so I'd like to go back and try for sub-1:00.

I'm trying to see what is the max number of power moons you can get before they stop keeping track on the left side of the screen. I'm guessing it's probably 200 and right now I'm at 150.

I haven't even found the race game yet. Where is that? I just got to the Seaside Kingdom and the volleyball game today. That one was fun. Got around 35 on the first try, 80 the next one, then 131 on my last one. May go back and go for a crazy number, but it's pretty tough once it's really going.

Snow Kingdom...I just beat the game. Only found 242 moons, so plenty of reason to keep playing. I'm about to check out the Mushroom Kingdom now.
