Oh cool, I didn't know they did Ni No Kuni too. I loved the first one, I need to try the newest one at some point.

Ah damn. I was skipping lots of the unimportant dialogue in Trails of Cold Steel by the end.

I've got a friend that is playing Tokyo Xanadu on my recommendation and he is loving it but it's not for me.

It's a pretty tall ask for me to want to replay a JRPG as well for the same reason. With stuff like Uncharted or Popful Mail I know the game like the back of my hand which speeds them up to pretty short lengths.

I did the same thing with SMT Digital Devil Saga, damn that boss was insanely hard.

I died the first time on the true final boss of Octopath and oohhhhhh boy but I'm a stubborn sob. Between the boss gauntlet before it (you can't save) and the length of that battle itself it was 40+ minutes lost iirc. I was very annoyed that much I remember for sure. Had to adjust my strategy and then I got it.

I don't remember any of the main game stuff being too bad. Beelzebub in fly form is tricky. The dragons are tough but fair. Demi-fiend in DDS and Satan in DDS 2 are some reaaaal ass gangster mfers.

So I started over in DQXIs after 13 hours. I just don't do this stuff any more but I really didn't like my name. Silvyn sounded nice but it's too close to Sylvando. Plus I didn't put much time into it. I named him Lucian which is Latin for Light. The hero is the Luminary. I'm much happier with the name now.

after trying all options in battle mode I think I love free form fighting and follow orders for everyone. It starts off with everyone but you fighting on their own in free form. I tried classic camera and that's a fine way to play. But I like this new system. The freedom of just slightly moving around before attacking makes me feel more free and connected to the battle. How does everyone else play?

i messed around with the movement but since it doesnt actually do anything i stopped pretty fast. i moved the camera angles sometimes but stopped moving the characters pretty early on. i assigned all orders manually, there are some good strats in the game that auto battle doesnt let you do.

I wish more handhelds had a tv out option like the psp. Older ones can be modded at least.

Game Gear can be played with Mega SG. GB and GBA can be played on Cube.

The rest of the handheld trash can just die.

I enjoy that option for gba. Don't care about the others. Apparently there are options for DS/3DS which I need to look into.

ive been really pleased with Citra, it prompts you to auto update each time you turn it on to the lately nightly update, so you get even the smallest performance tweaks and fixes, and it takes like 10 seconds. you can up-res to remove alot of the jaggy stuff, and most games looks pretty clean. the only thing is that taking the res up to get the character models and the game world into higher res in turn makes the character portraits a some of the text a little blockier, as those were designed to look nice in 5p or whatever dreadfully archaic thing the 3ds uses, 240p or whatever, so i find going like 3x native still makes the game look smooth while not making the portraits too bad, going like 5x looks nice but the portraits then look like squares.

The 3DS is embarrassing af for when it came out.

My main thing is I want to use the DS/3DS as a controller while playing on a TV like the PSP. Seems like there are good options now.

The Switch screen was definitely big enough for me that I was able to easily use it as a portable. I was probably pretty close to 50/50 docked and portable.

DQXI is so freaking charming. I am about 8 hours into it and loving it. The only thing that is jarring is the 2D stuff. The way the text boxes are in 2D makes me dizzy. I can easily see this being one of my favorite RPGs ever.

Yup I sold me vita collection bc I had very few games and Skelter was one of the easier highest $ one I was able to sell here. I don't miss it too much, now even more so with Skelter 2 coming physically to switch. Only other amazing Vita game I'd love portably is Odin Sphere, that was an amazing game.

Totally get this, but at least Odin Sphere has 5 playable characters to keep things fresh. The soundtrack, art style, and story are also superb so it's one of those games I'm willing to forgive for getting a bit repetitive. Now Muramasa...that's about as shallow as a game gets. All style and no substance.

I did when my dad played, not as impressed. I'm slightly near sighted which is why I think (along with pixel density) games look better to me on handhelds. Unless I'm sitting like 2 feet away from my 65" OLED in my bedroom.

Yep man and when I HAVE worn glasses I'm constantly having to take them off to rub my watery eyes. But when I did wear them and sit like 12 feet away from an HD TV I could def see how sharp it was.

When I was playing Ni no Kuni 2 on my 4K OLED in my bed room I sat at the end of the bed so I was like 2 feet away I was super impressed by how it looked. Not only the sharp resolution but that neon lights gambling town looked incredible with dark blacks and super bright neon lights. So I can appreciate HD games on a big TV. I mean my eye sight is one reason but I just love the comfort and convenience of portables. I can stop the game any time, and pick it back instantly thanks to sleep mode.

I am playing Dragon Quest XI and just got to the part where the world plunges into darkness and your party is separated. Two questions: Will I still be able to complete the side quests that I haven't finished yet? Also, a guide I looked at said that you would be playing as the Hero after the Yggdrasil events (it showed him as a fish), but I'm playing as Sylvando. Does something determine who you start as during the second half of the game?

@tonymack21, maybe you can answer these questions.

Yep I asked my Dad about it. So these are those new "character stories". Just shows you what some of them were doing after the break. Veronica and Serena didn't get one, not yet in my game at least. So instead of Sylv just showing up with a parade, you play about an hour or so of game time to see how it all started.

And then I asked "In your version, did I get up in the middle of the night and hack in the sink?" Because we are always quoting wierd science, spaceballs, and big trouble in little china to eachother.

Ok, I see. I was wondering why that guide just skipped over the part I'm at. I'm playing as Sylvando and he's gathering party members to help make people smile or something. I hope his section isn't too long because he is my least favorite character to use in battle.

Parasite Eve is such an awesome game. I'd love to see Square Enix revive the series.

Just started up Wild Arms 3. It's the first game in the series I've played and I'm really digging it so far. Music is top-notch and the combat is a lot of fun. I've heard it's only about 30-40 hours long so it shouldn't take me too long to beat.

@tonymack21 Lol. I've already watched most of the cutscenes on Youtube so I'm all caught up on the story stuff. Still slowly chipping away at my second BEE playthrough and trying to recruit everyone this time. I'm actually thinking of holding off on playing more of it until some DLC drops so I have a few new things to do around the monastery.

ya and all the new characters too. i have been thinking of some different runs to do like mages only or something but going to wait for the dlc in case i want to include any of the new people. i'll prob do another regular run with the new people starting with BEE as id think thats the one Jeritza will be playable on. Anna probably will be available to all. the other 4 that havent been revealed may be path specific as well. and more monastery activities will certainly be nice. hoping the hot springs/sauna is more than just one or two characters at a time.

I did play WA1 way way back and beat it. How about Alter Code F the PS2 remake? Is that generally thought of as good?

Sprites always win. Alter Code F has new play elements and characters but IMO loses the charm of the original.

4 is the only one I found to be a weak link. 5 is a total love letter that should be saved for last.

In theory it should be better but I prefer the original.

Three Houses is soooo good. I shouldn't have waited so long to get it. Its like Awakening mashed up with Persona. I'd really love to see Nintendo releases Awakening and Fates on the Switch. I never played Fates, and I'd love to replay Awakening and finish it this time. I hate the 3DS, and I find it very hard to play games on it. But fat chance that happening. Nintendo doesn't seem to have any interest in bring 3ds games to the switch for some reason.

it is so good, its easily my runaway game of the year one of my top few games of all time after spending near 270 hours on it playing all 4 paths and there is more to come. be sure and make a save at pegasus moon to make playing the path split quicker so you dont have to repeat the school phase unless you just want to. i love the mix of persona like stuff in with the fire emblem stuff. each path is great in its own right and after playing all and seeing the different sides and putting the whole story together its really something. you get hints and things throughout but then they throw a surprise or something in and its pretty nice. the next two dlc's are going to be the really good ones as well, adding more things to do in the monastery and more playable characters and quests. of course the obligatory anime/rpg hot springs/sauna is coming as well as some things they havent revealed. cant wait.

i am playing awakening now never having finished either, i just cant play on 3ds, but im playing on citra, the fire emblem games work pretty well, but not perfect, some slowdown during battle effects but its not that bad and its worth it to be able to play with a controller on pc. three houses will spoil you, the great presentation, the extra elements, better weapon system, it really feels like a step back and i guess thats because it is, but im determined to finish this time. id love to see the older games make it to switch but since you can upscale with citra its probably better on citra anyway.

for FE17 i really hope they continue with this trend and take it up to an even grander scale. id like to see more choices that really affect things like in the older bioware games, a fire emblem on the scale of a mass effect would really be something. i think you could retain these elements and not have to do a school or academy next time, you could do it as a military camp or something and keep the training and bonding mechanics intact.

How many students should I realistically recruit? I've recruited two so far, Felix and Lysithea. And one of the teachers/church people joined me (Shamir, who has amazing bow skills), which I wasn't even aware was a thing but she had the option so I did it. Which puts me at 12 roster members. And only 10 can go into battle. And the one adjudicator spot for half xp or whatever) So is it even worth going after more students? Seems like it would be impossible to keep them all leveled having them just sit on the sidelines all the time. I am playing on classic, so thinking maybe I should get 2-3 more just to have backups in case I run out of rewinds to reverse deaths and lose someone. But at the same time, the rewinds kind of make classic mode pointless. I think I've got 5 rewinds per battle right now. Seems like it would take one hell of a screw up to lose someone.

you can only have 12 in the final battle. You already have like 9-10. So not many at all, or none.

You will eventually be able to have 3 adjutants, and the more support paired up characters have the greater the bonus from them. I recruited everyone in all runs to get all the support stuff and endings etc. Having the characters also unlocks their paralogue and all of those are really good some of the best missions and maps in the game and most carry very good rewards including relic weapons. The cast is so amazing in this game hardly any of them are just bad or uninteresting. If you play all routes you really get to know them all very well and it's one of the best casts in anything I've ever seen.

Make sure to get Lorenz since you have lysithea. His paralogue gives a weapon that gives 4 magic range and is compatible with lysitheas crest. She's already the most busted unit in the game arguably and that just makes her stupid powerful as enemies can't counter at that range usually and makes up for the low movement of the magic classes. Hoping for dark flyer/malig knight in the dlc classes.

You will eventually have like 13 uses of DP as well lol. So losing a character takes really botching things.

I'm 50 hours into DQ 11 and don't like how Act 2 basically forces you to traverse the entire world all over again. It's not like Final Fantasy 6 either, where the world is drastically different in the second half. It's honestly starting to get tedious, having to find all the party members again and reclaim all the stones. It just seems like a cheap way to lengthen the game really. On the plus side, I guess it doesn't take that long, since I have four of the stones back already. And the only party members I need to get back are Veronica and Serena. Anyway, I do still really like the game. Again, it's just starting to drag a little due to the backtracking. I'm tempted to start Witcher 3 tomorrow since I have come to prefer open world RPGs to JRPGs. Maybe I'll just finish the main story in DQ first and then do the post game (which I hear is really long) later.

ya post game is a bad term for chapter 3, they should just call it chapter 3, its not a post game or an epilogue, its a full chapter that finishes the story and adds so much. it was a strange and poor design choice to put credits at the end of chapter 2, there is so much it doesnt reveal. you may want to go ahead and do chapter 3 after you see the rest of 2. you'll have to let us know. witcher is huge beyond comprehension and is more than twice as long as DQ11, but you cant lose playing either game.

did i send you or post the witcher videos?

Yeah, you posted some above, and I've been looking at some game play videos of the Switch version on YouTube...I already stated this in my previous post, but I do really like DQ 11. I don't think it's going to top 8 for me, but it's up there with 5, my second favorite. I just didn't really like having to travel to all the locations again during Act 2, since you lose the ability to warp. It's been going along pretty quickly, though, so maybe it's not that big of a deal. I've been wanting to play Witcher 3 for a long time, so I am probably going to start it up as soon as I get it in the mail. Maybe I'll try to juggle them both simultaneously lol.

there is only the witcher, once youre on the path, you dont come off lol. and good deal on the vids, the knowledge really helps the immersion into the world which is a big factor.

you'll have your abilities back and that will help alot. i think the full dq11 experience including chapter 3 and the true ending.... still get goosebumps thinking about that, takes the top spot for dragon quest, or at the least sits up there with 8 for me, they are both really incredible.

I feel similarly about the 3DS. The Fire Emblem and Etrian Odyssey games are really all I could force myself through on it and I love those two franchises.

something happens that does put some differences in the world and resolves some things in act 3 at least even though you will visit some similar places, different things will happen in some of them and things you couldnt do before you can so they do vary some things in act 3.

chap 2 really hasn't bothered me. It's flows from area to area pretty quickly, there is new stuff happening you have to fix in each area. And most characters get more attacks or specials they unlock at the end of their arc.

the art looks horrendous. It's a huge turn off. And immediate dismissal. For the same reason I think Nintendo's incredible art and level design helps their underpowered console. IE they take full advantage of it. I also feel crap talentless hack art ruins a game.

ya it doesnt look great, looks like a quick cash in off the back of three houses popularity, the story is split similar to three houses between multiple characters.

Finally finished DQ Xi S after 114 hours. It was great game the post game quest was a great story completion. Also getting to the finale of the quest filled in some holes. Did seem like micheal bay had a hand in the finale tho lol.
