Which of these Nintendo franchises do you consider to be the best overall?

Zelda positive
Mario negative

I only got the idea for this topic after seeing that I could use positive to represent Zelda and negative to represent Mario lol. I'm talking about the main series in each (so action-adventure Zelda games vs. Mario platformers).

Here are the Wikipedia entries that show the main games I'm referring to:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zeld...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario

So pretty even, in terms of overall output.

Feel free to post which franchise you voted for. (Mario is running away with it so far.) Optionally, list your 3 favorite games from each series if you'd like. (I'm sure most have already done that in the past, but maybe your top 3 has changed with the release of BotW and Odyssey last year). Here are mine:

1. Breath of the Wild
2. Majora's Mask
3. Ocarina of Time

1. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Super Mario World
3. Super Mario Odyssey

I've played all of those games listed on Wikipedia above (except Super Mario Run), so I really am a big fan of both.

Tough. The top Zelda games are the best of any series, but there are so many great Mario games.

1. BotW
2. OoT
3. LttP

1. SMB 2
2. SM W
3. SMB 3

Ultimately voted Mario. So many Zelda games I have no desire to go back and play is what ultimately swung the vote.

They're both amazing and in my mind equal in awesomeness, but if I HAD to choose one I thought was better I would choose Zelda.

Top 3 Zelda:

1: Ocarina of Time
2. Breath of the Wild
3. Wind Waker

Top 3 Mario:

1. Super Mario 64
2. Super Mario Odyssey
3. Super Mario Sunshine

Zelda without a doubt. As much as I love Mario games, a new Zelda game is a g*d d*mn event in my house.

Top 3 Zelda:
1. Ocarina of Time
2. Breath of the Wild
3. Link to the Past

Top 3 Mario:
1. Super Mario World
2. Super Mario 3D World
3. New Super Mario Bros U

Mario never sunk as low as Skyward Sword in a mainline game, so Mario. Pretty much every Mario game is amazing in some way.

That's not a mainline Mario game, so his point stands lol. Skyward Sword might be the low point for me as well. I would normally say Spirit Tracks, but I am recently getting the urge to play that one again.

The games developed by Nintendo. Hotel Mario is in the same camp as those CD-i Zelda games.

Bottom 3 each?

Super Mario Land
NSMB (DS)
Super Mario Bros Dx (bad port)

Adventures of Link
Spirit Tracks
Phantom Hourglass

I'm not counting none mainline releases like Super Mario Run or Four Swords. I'm real close to putting up Majora's Mask instead of Phantom Hourglass. The Lost Levels would take Dx's place if we don't count ports.

Bottom 3:

Phantom Hourglass
Skyward Sword
Spirit Tracks

Super Mario Land
NSMB 2
Lost Levels

I enjoyed all of those games, btw. When it comes to Mario and Zelda, I'm not hard to please. Those are my least favorite Zelda games because of the forced touch and motion controls. Those Mario games are simply the ones I'm least likely to play again.

Mario running off with it again!...I was just curious to see which one more people would choose. Pokemon is right up there with Mario in terms of sales, but doesn't seem to have the same reputation as Zelda or Mario. (Or Metroid, to a lesser extent. That's mostly just Prime and Super Metroid, I think.)

Absolutely! People knock on this one too much! The overworld is weird, some of the caves are too hard, but the dungeons are just flat out MASTERPIECES, and the music is some of the best the series has to offer.

Childhood memories are the reason those are my favorite Mario games as well - I haven't played either of them since... @Heavyd814life, nice to see another GTZer who ranks Majora's Mask as highly as I do.

If I went solely with the 2D games, I'd go Zelda in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, that's only half of it. Mario made the jump to 3D well. Zelda, well... in my opinion, didn't. All of the charm and love I had for Zelda was dead in OoT. It was too easy, and things were not well hidden. So I have to give the total nod to Mario.

I never opened a guide while playing it, and I think I finished the game with 93 of them? The handful I didn't get were the only things in the game I missed.

I've beaten most of the main series Mario games. Off the top of my head, I think Sunshine may be the only one I haven't. And the Yoshi's Island games if you count those.

For Zelda, I have beaten the original, adventure of link, ocarina of time, four swords adventure, maybe Minish Cap (I don't remember), and Breath of the Wild. I lost interest in the others before the end. Not to the point where I didn't want to finish them, but to the point that some other game distracted me from it, then another game, then another, and I never got back to them.

So Mario wins for me. Even though I like the idea of them, they just don't keep me fixated for the long haul the way a Mario game does.

lol, not even close to me. Top 3 Mario versus least favorite Zelda. Zelda II is not a Zelda game, completely different in almost everyway (in a bad way imo). At least Mario 2 is still a platformer that looks and feels like Mario.

Doesn't bother me that people like it though.
It's not terribly done, and is on par with other NES games in terms of "Nintendo polish". Just none of the new game elements in it appealed to me.

Zelda 2 very easily could've been a non Zelda game, and we all know SMB2 actually wasn't a Mario game originally. They both added a ton of new characters and mechanics that added to their respective franchise. For me though, Zelda 2 is in my top 5 NES games, so this is an easy one.

Nintendo re-releases Zelda games way more often than they do Mario games. That's because all the Mario games are already perfect as-is and don't need fixing.

Looks like I have some catching up to do!

Zelda vs Mario

This is really hard. I love both franchises. A lot of my best gaming memories are from both of them, not to mention some of my favorite games of all time. Super Mario Bros. was the first game I ever played. Link's Awakening was the first full-length game I ever beat completely on my own. I loved both of their entries into the 3D world about equally. The 2D Mario games are great because they're easy to just sit down and play at any time, and can be beaten in 1-3 sittings depending on the game. The 2D Zelda games are great because, no matter how many times I've played them, I'm still just as captivated and drawn in by them as I was the first time. A major point against Zelda is that the 3D games haven't aged well for me. I thought Ocarina of Time was amazing and played the crap out of it in the late 90s and early 2000s, but now, it doesn't hold my interest. None of the others I've tried to replay have been able to either. Breath of the Wild was good, but it lost a lot of what makes Zelda special. If the next 3D Zelda game can keep the improvements BotW made, while bringing back classic Zelda staples, that could be a game that really changes my tune about 3D Zelda. A point against Mario is that it's kind of bland when compared to Zelda. It's just mindless platforming, with no depth/story/etc. As much as I love me some platforming, it's hard to rank a bunch of platformers over full-length adventures. So I have to go with Zelda here, even if I've mostly lost interest in the 3D titles for now.

Top 3 Zelda Games

1) Link's Awakening
2) Oracle of Seasons
3) A Link Between Worlds

Top 3 Mario Games

I really hate to rank the 2D and 3D Mario games together, but if I have to...

1) Super Mario Bros. 3
2) Super Mario Odyssey
3) Super Mario 3D World

Zelda II vs Mario 2

Zelda II

I enjoyed Mario 2 a fair amount as a kit, but not as much as SMB1/SMB3/SMW. The older I got, the less I cared to go back to it. Now, I can't even remember the last time I played it. The game has an overall weird feel to it that I can't fully explain, but I don't like it. Zelda II is tough, and very different from the other Zelda games, but it's still really good.

A Link to the Past vs Super Mario World

Super Mario World

I love ALttP and considered it the best Zelda game for a long time, but as I've replayed the Zelda games in my adult years it's dropped in my personal ranking considerably. I still think it's a great game, I just think that many of the subsequent 2D Zelda games do things better than it. Super Mario World, however, is near perfection.

Ocarina of Time vs Super Mario 64

Ocarina of Time

This one was tough. As I mentioned, I've not really cared for the 3D Zelda games as much in my adult years. I've tried re-playing Ocarina of Time three different times now over the last few years, and each time I eventually got bored and quit. However, I haven't played Super Mario 64 since probably 2000. I loved it back then, but I fear if I play it now I'll find it's aged poorly. I'm pretty sure I'll have a lot of the same frustrations I had when I tried Sunshine recently. If my assumption is correct, then I have to put Ocarina of Time over it.

I'm kinda surprised that so many prefer SMW over ALTTP (2-7, counting the opinion of lpeters). I can't really argue with SMW having the most replay value though, and it did introduce Yoshi, my go-to guy for almost every multiplayer Nintendo game in existence (that features Mario characters.)

Seeing Scott's post reminds that I forgot this matchup:

Super Mario Bros. NES negative

Legend of Zelda NES vs Super Mario Bros. NES

Gotta go with Zelda here. It's such a more in-depth and complicated game than SMB1. I still can't believe it came out when it did. It holds up surprisingly well today, having a unique style and charm to it that no other Zelda game has matched. SMB1, however, does not hold up well with it's extremely basic gameplay and awful controls.

You would be correct about Mario 64. It HAS aged poorly. 3D platforming in general wasn't really good in that era wry smile and Mario 64 isn't much different sadly.

64 is still okay, just a pretty bad camera impacts the gameplay. And Banjo Kazooie is still a very good game as is Conker's (if that's considered a "platformer"), so there are still some platformers from that era that have aged nicely.

Top Mario Games:
1. SM64
2. SMB3
3. SMW

Top Zeldas:
1. OOT
2. ALTTP
3. BOTW

You traded Keio for N64 games and you still can't appreciate one of the few games N64 games that's still great in its genre frown

Speaking of, here is an interesting list from Polygon about Mario games...(No way in hell I agree with #1, or Mario Land 2 being better than Mario 2 NES - but overall not a terrible list)...

You know your list is stacked with good games when SMW end up at #6.

I always really enjoyed 6 Golden Coins. Kind of feels like the "Link to the Past" of Mario games in that its a very solid game but never really comes up in the discussion in its own franchise.

I didn't dislike it, but I really do like Mario 2. Mario games on the old GB didn't really "feel" like Mario games. They had much different jumping physics and stuff.

Wait wait wait....Link to the Past???? It's merely "solid" and it doesn't come up in discussions about Zelda games? raspberry You lost me.

Whoops, I meant Link's Awakening.

Ah, yes...Link's Awakening doesn't come up as much as it should. But we can disagree on how solid LA is - I think it's phenomenal.

I thought it was a fantastic game. I have probably beaten that Zelda game more than any other in the franchise.

Link's Awakening is the one I've played the most from start to finish as well. I always try to remember my first time playing a game when I rank them. If I put more emphasis on replay value like others do, or made a list of Zelda games that I would rather play now, then LA would be in my top 3 instead of OoT.

I honestly can't give an answer to this one. Well played.

I think Mario 3 was the more important game just because it set the ground work for every 2D Mario game that has come after it. Which one did I enjoy more? I don't think I have an answer to that.

ALttP & SMW for me. The difference between SMW and SMB3 for me is like .01.

My biggest gripe with the LoZ is the lack of a diagonal control. Up, down, left, right.

Voted Mario 3. LA is stellar though (beat it twice), especially considering GB. But Mario 3 is legendary to those of us who grew up in that time. Seriously dominated playground/ lunch room discussions across so many grades, and the Wizard.
