new Thread Description
Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.

Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.

Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!

Old Topic Description

This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Did I vote for TMNT and give my rationalizations for it? I meant to say Astyanax. Change my vote to Astyanax.

Yes lol. Long winded justification for a vote not needed! Plus I'll prob skim and end up skipping right over it.

I'd say vote in one single line then feel free to give your heart felt reasoning why.

Does anyone have experience with the Rhea mod (SD drive enabled) Sega Saturn? I heard about it on My Life of Gaming. The problem is I don't have any technical experience to complete the mod myself. The only one on ebay is $800+.

Does anyone think they could do the mod for me?

It's pretty "rare", but more like no one bothered to look into it. I've seen some auctions ended it around 300-400. DC has a similar mod I believe, really not worth the trouble.

There is one for PS1 as well (PSIO or something like that I don't remember for sure). These things aren't always for sale. The cheapest option is to wait for a batch to go on sale and install it yourself. Otherwise you are going to pay a premium.

I'd just stick to cdrs.

Top 4 Signs the Polymega's a Stackable Vapor Machine

image

1. Social media account dormant for five, going on six months, a sign that they aren't paying their social media manager anymore so they aren't posting. Or that there's never been a paid social media manager, and that there's just been absolutely no developments to speak of since then. One's financial insolvency, the other's precarious for a product in development. Both their recent tweets were them saying "Site maintenance!" so people didn't think they'd packed up and left during site downtimes.
2. Weird posts that DO exist where they invoke their own name, but the link has absolutely nothing to do with their product, nor mentions them at all, but the inattentive would be led to believe that Polymega got a mention in a Time article.
3. Still tons of prerendered stuff, but I'm not seeing internals, pictures of guts. Proof of more than vague concept. I hear whispers of legend like a CD drive that'll fire up Dosbox and ...Saturn game playback, Neo Geo? I'd need a refresher from Gredler. But most of this stuff is easily enough cobbled together for non-critical eyes to glaze over quickly. The Colecovision Chameleon was a SNES Jr. stuck in a taped cardboard box with a flash cart inserted, remember, and when their angel investors gave a deadline for some form of actual physical proof of concept that they'd done anything but buy Jaguar shells and make some nice looking renders, the end result was the investors pulling out. Like, I'm getting MEGA echoes of this crap in the Polymega so far.
4. HYBRID FPGA EMULATION CONSOLE RECREATION
5. BONUS: Highlighting huge new features like PS1/PS2 memory card integration with a stock photo of a Sony product without actually demonstrating the feature. If only we could all prove our work with vague Tweets. IT JUST WORKS!

Yeah they don't have a social media manager, the dude who handles that is a producer/manager at the company.

The link is to an article where the "Sony global sales chief Jim Ryan" says "...and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this". The tweet says "Classic PlayStation lives on #Polymega". Seems like a straight forward attempt at marketing to fans who felt slighted by the Sony representative's statement.

Yeah the version I played was the disc only version, none of the docks, and it played NeoGeo CD and PCE Arcade cards very nicely, as nice as any well configured PC emulator

Agreed, they should have said nothing at all until it was ready

Yep, check out the patent they've filed. This is supposedly a unique new technology.

Yeah they are hesitant to show any physical hardware until the production molds are finished.

POLYMEGA SQUAD! Yeah, these are just my feels on this, obviously only Polymega knows what Polymega's up to, but their website's also gone completely dark since like... JULY. That's pretty awful.

I'm not really giving a crap about production molds, show me PCBs, show me hardware. Show me the FPGAs that rival Kevtris's work! Show me this isn't all hot air and bullcrap, because this is frankly all hard to believe when even the best FPGA head that we know of is like "N64 would be very difficult, anything beyond Playstation seems far too complex currently." So if we've got a new brainchild in the FPGA videogame arena we're not aware of, it'd certainly behoove them, and bring much more credibility to their ongoing work if it exists, if they'd stop shrouding this in secrecy and "filing patents on unique new technologies" and fudging lay it on us.

I wanna be wrong about everything. Believe it. Long as the base isn't $150 and the modular slots aren't $100 a pop, I'm down to clown. But if it's a Retrofreak and it's literally YAEB (yet another emulation box) then come clean on THAT. The lack of technical details to this point, if there's a meter going from "Marketing Bullcrap" to "Technical Breakthrough" it's pointing heavily to the left.

If this is the Zimba 3000 and has $100 modules I'm definitely down to clown. I just don't think it's going to be that or else they avoid the word emulation altogether since that turns off FPGA nerds.

Well, $100 modules for what equates to an optical drive labelled "PSX" and one labelled "Neo Geo CD", they're just soft-locking you out to get $100 more from you. That'd be a crapty game to be playing, too, so this had REALLY better be something different or they're going to get crucified. Which may be the hold-up, frankly.

I wasn't an FPGA nerd until I got my hands on the Super NT. This is stuff worth paying for. Emulation boxes, for ease of access, that's fine, but this is advertising itself as something proper Retro.

Yeah dude I am not 100% sold on it, but they gave me a hell of a pitch haha :P

Like I said above, they should not have shown crap or told anyone about the project until they had something they were allowed to show publicly and answer questions on. They shot themselves in the foot with their eagerness to show stuff, and announced it too early. Of course people want to see real hardware, wtf were they thinking saying it exists but not having the OK to show the hardware.

I am excited to see the final product, they are certainly doing a lot of work on it and have a large staff of people, so I have high expectations, but who knows it could be a big budget lemon.

The disc drive plays all of the different supported systems, AFAIK, but the modules allow you to use specific controllers and memory cards from that platform.

I'll keep an eye on Polymega because I'm all about downsizing and simplifying. The less system boxes I have the better. I would need sega saturn, gamecube, OG xbox, and Dreamcast.

Rallisport Challenge 2. Best arcade rally game ever made. OG XBOX exclusive. Any way I like the fact the Polymega has a cool interface like snes classic does. With pics/box pics etc. . I will likely get it and start with just the genesis module.

NHL Hitz gets a pass because I haven't played them. I haven't played RSC2 but I played the first for a while and I played it a lot more than Sega GT so I guess that gets a pass too. Steel Battalion doesn't get to be a reason to own Xbox. That's like saying Eye of Judgment is a reason to own PS3.

I was considering it as a emu machine a few years back, but nowadays, anything can be an emu box and can output HDMI. And takes up less space than Big Duke.

To be fair, the gamecube version of Hitz is second best, but the controller isn't as good for it as the XBox controller. The PS2 version has a bad frame rate, unfortunate :(

They really are some of the best hockey games of all time, if you even slightly care about hockey videogames definitely play them. Paper rock scissors moment to moment decisions constantly with and without the puck. You can do two things as a forward, do a fancy maneuver with the puck or a spin move. As a defender you can try to poke the puck away with your stick, or body check the other player. Bodychecking a player who's doing a spin move causes you to bounce off and fall backward, while trying to poke the puck away while a player is doing a stickhandle maneuver and you will fall down forward. This makes for a constant guessing game, is that player going to stick handle or spin, or is that player going to try to poke the puck or body check me. There are a lot more neuonces to the game (if you're checked while alongside the boards you get knocked through the glass and then you're down a skater briefly giving the team that checked you a mini-power play.

This is just talking about the actual gameplay, don't get me started on the RPG mode where you start as a minor league team (custom made including uniforms, complete with EXP and player progression), or the awesome rinks like medieval castle, old wild west street, alien planet. Did I mention licenced gear for that loot grind?

Yes, easily one of the best series of hockey games ever.
