new Thread Description
This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PalPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Holy #%$, Wheels617 got himself a twofer :) I knew that this set had a 2nd set of maracas from the auction pics, but was not expecting it to have a 2nd vinyl mat and 2nd control bar. Yee-haa. Price I won it at was definitely avg. of what one set goes for.

I see you throwing that subtle Wheels wheres my damn modded Nomad pics shade @Lunar. I will get that duplicate setup tonight and try and get some pics that show how nice of an improvement there is. Honestly if you picked up the modded one you probably wouldnt think it was anything special, but once you pick up the stock one its like wow that was a terrible screen even back in the day.

It's not that I'm against mods, heck I considered a modded Nomad. But I want to play GBC games on an actual GBC. And I know only a frontlight can be modded in, so pass. Plus I already have a GBA unit, a Micro. Just subtle things like, the cart won't stick out in a GBC, also the nostalgia of having to sit in front of a light. Plus the colors are really cool! AND it has some good games. Haha, I might do it guys! GBC Here I come!

Framemeister or OSSC?

Framemeister
- S-video hookup?
- audio pass through?

OSSC
-Line double and tripler

How many different connections can I have at once with the framemeister and do I need additional cables? What are my options of running SNES through it to take advantage of it's scanlines and upscalers?

I also want a backlit GBC or GB. Half nostalgia for the form factor and it is nice to not have the cartridge sticking out (especially when actually using it as a portable!). Unfortunately as far as I understand because of the reflective screen it's basically impossible to backlight mod it. Because of the very low resolution, tiny size, and awkward aspect ratio, there are no good candidates for replacement screens either. The best we get is things like GBBoy Colour with it's stretched screen.

I'm fine playing it on a non lit GBC.

so I'm guessing that's a gameboy player through framemeister on your 32" Lunar?

You'll need an adapter for the scart input on the framemeister if you go that route.

yep I see the UK site sells it. Can I run an s-video system through it? So just 2 at a time then? Also can any of the non RGB systems I own do s-video? SNES, Cube, N64?

You can have a composite/S-Video, component, SCART, and 2 HDMI inputs at once. It comes with the SCART adapter for the RGB port.

If you want pixels so sharp they'll cut your eyeballs you'll need a 1CHIP SNES or an SNES Jr. Once you upscale SNES you'll notice the original one looks a little blurry and once you post pictures we're all going inception into your brain that you need to upgrade.

You got me confused with @DefaultGen, I have a DVDO.

Game Boy Player going through Nintendo GameCube would need help with RGB or Component($300 cable).

It's just my trusty AGS-101!

I'm surprised your model 1 SNES can't output RGB, I wonder if it has to do with your upscaler. It worked fine when I tried.

Nintendo GameCube can do S-Video natively. So can model 1 SNES. Not sure about N64...

Yeah the GCN YPbPr is mildly better than Wii YPbPr playing GCN but I really can't be bothered to pay that much for a single cable.

nice, cube, snes, and 3do is reason enough for me to invest in a framemeister. So I can play those systems on my non s-video TV with a nice upscaler like that. Also, were you talking to me about the SNES and RGB? I got sound but no video. I might open my system up and find out for sure if it's not 1chip.

Thanks Wheels! With all the money I'm spending on upscalers and such I decided not to get a Nomad, but I appreciate seeing your pics!!

So my original big SNES should support RGB right it's just that the 1chip would look better? I guess I just got a crap cable then from ebay because I got audio and no video, and it was sort of lagging audio as well. I just want to ask this before I order from retrogc.uk.

Well I pre-ordered my Framemeister. $354 with express. Sheesh. My games better look NUTZ. I selected express because it sounds like they move you ahead of people who didn't select express. I love the way my genny games look. But I really REALLY want to see what they look like with some further upscaling and scanline options. I want it to look as "CRTy" as possible. Hah smile

I think someone mentioned a while back they come with euroscart converter cables now? Is that true? Or should I order my converter cable from retrogamingcables.uk?

New firmware is messing around with line quadrupling and quintupling on OSSC. It doesn't sound like much supports it though. Even a VP50 Pro doesn't like 1280x960. At least when paired with a compatible video processor this puts OSSC on par resolution-wise with FM. I assume a DVDO Edge can windowbox the 1280x960 for a 1080p display and have it look all nice and crisp and perfect with a few milliseconds less combined lag than a Framemeister?

Still waiting on a package with Mushi (sat in Tokyo for 9 days lol). Heard that the PS2 port looks really blurry but I really don't want to get a Japanese 360 just yet.

PS2 has a huge import shootie library. Also some pretty cool random titles. I've done a lot of looking into the import library recently.

You can scale and output however you want on the Framemeister because it's redrawing the whole image. For 1080p displays the most popular settings would probably be a 4x scale with black bars on all sides to maintain pixel perfect scaling.

The top link on this site has a bunch of premade 4x and 5x scaling profiles with optimal settings for different consoles.

I mean, does it look any different from frame quadrupling? I'm just trying to grasp how they will differ visually on a 40" LED TV. Does one look better than the other? How do they look different? Or do the come to the same place only in different ways?

Scaler nerds need to chime in. Your plain old TV won't support the line quadruple resolution as-is, so OSSC will need to be paired with a video processor to output 1080p. With similar scaling settings I'd imagine they would look just about identical. I know OSSC handles color processing in RGB color space, Framemeister converts to YUV color space, but ultimate your plain old TV probably converts to YUV color space so maybe the colors are a little different in the end? Again, you scaler nerds can guess what the difference in the image might be.

Ultimately Framemeister or OSSC + video processor is going to look great either way.

The way it really works is a 240p image would look super small on a 1080p set. Upscaling means the image size is increased. Your TV has ways to do this but it doesn't do it in a smart or uniform way so you see a bigger representation of your small image which shows all the problems at a magnified level. The image is usually stretched or compress in so way.

Scaling through a device like the framemeister or OSSC can give you a better image because they handle scaling better and are able to support more resolutions. The double/triple/quadruple wording simply means "integer scaling". Example, you take your 240p image and quadruple it, this gives you a 960p image. The upscaler in your TV (most of them) would simple stretch the image or try to fill the screen by converting it to the closest match or simply not display it at all depending on what modes it supports. The framemeister will allow you to retain the aspect ratio and place black bars on the top/bottom/left/right to fill the screen instead of stretching the image itself.

To fill the screen through a framemeister with 240p, you'd pick a 5x resolution to retain the original aspect ratio or you have the option to set custom ranges inbetween. The idea is that it gives you freedom to change the resolution, upscaling and aspect ratio, while also letting you crop/stretch, etc the image manually creating your own custom type of display scenario that works best for your TV. So basically it lets you fine tune things to work best and gives you more compatibility options for your specific TV.

thanks for the explaination. Do I honestly need a video processor on top of the framemeister? I went with framemeister because not only does it upscale really well it's got lots of options for scanlines and stretching the image how you like it. I personally am not interested in an iscan.

You don't need one on top of the Framemeister, it's already a video scaler.

The OSSC is just a line doubler ("just" is underselling it, it's a line doubler because it saves on processing time). It outputs 480p (line doubling) that most TVs do a good job upscaling to 1080p themselves if you want to use it alone. The 3x, 4x, and 5x "doubling" of the OSSC is off-spec so many TVs won't support it and you'll need a video processor to normalize the signal on top of giving you fancy scaling and processing options.
