Played some Sega Ninja Gaiden for CQ last night. The SMS version is decent, but kind of ruined because you can't attack and run at the same time. So choppy. The Game Gear version appears to suuuuuck. Sega got shafted from this franchise which is why I didn't play it as a kid frown

Those USB ones? I feel like I have no use for them. There are better 6 button alternatives on PC, and unless there is a stable emulator and you want that authentic Saturn experience then you should play a real Saturn with real controller instead.

Weird. The game is like $5. I have no doubt that the game and the guide have low productions runs because it's an Agetec release but low guide productions runs are much lower I'm sure. If it's anything like ultra low manga runs...yikes.

I beat Katamari Damacy on the PS2 yesterday. What a fantastic game! The gameplay was addicting and the little side story was interesting. I'm not sure if I'll start We Love Katamari or move onto something else. Maybe a PSX title like MediEvil? I played a little bit and the graphics... are tough to work with.

Since this game is basically never talked about, some more thoughts on Eternal Ring.

So there is a STEEP difficulty spike. It hits when you get to the Cliff Forest. You go from it being near impossible to die (unless you are really bad at these kind of games), to running into Lizard Men that kill you in two hits. The game warns you that you aren't strong enough, but you also can't circumvent going here it so it's a bit of a wtf moment. Your sword quickly becomes relatively useless and you want to focus on one type of Magic for the most part because in addition to attribute buffing rings simply having more rings of the same element type equipped increases your power with that element. The gems used to enchant or make rings are also your currency in this game. It's important to note that regardless of the power level of the gem for enchantment purposes, it's worth ONE gem in the shop so I ended up going back and grinding out gems for currency in the early areas to stock up on MP restore items since magic is the only effective way to take down the enemies in the forest.

One more thing: R2 and L2 change the height of your sight. This ends up mattering quite a bit for talking to people, opening chests as well as being able to hit enemies with attacks.

Done with Beyond Oasis. I'm not a big fan. You guys tricked me with a beat 'em up disguised as an overhead action game. The hit detection is crappy and you play through like 90% of the game with your default dagger. You rarely get limited-use swords and ranged weapons are basically worthless.

image

PRO tip. Towards the end of the game (the last area of the main island) do not jump off this ledge. There is no simple way back because the overworld is mostly an unconnected circle. You will have to play through multiple dungeons again to get back!! I lost over a half hour to this.

So Kuon is really something else. It's absolutely worth playing and I recommend burning it off or emulating it to do so if those are ones only options. I wanna talk about it though, so yeah...

Warning: Rambling and some spoilers

If you had someone with just the knowledge of playing games and not when they were released or anything else they could tell you this game came out after RE2, but before RE4. It's 100% Japanese and set back in time so if this kind of thing interests you that makes it even more of a must play. I absolutely loved the setting. Kuon is super weird in that it's most definitely a horror game but it has real gameplay and From had a lot of interesting ideas here. It's actually quite similar to Resident Evil 2 (kinda alluded to this already), which I hate. So then why did I enjoy this game well first of all the controls are infinitely better so that helps a ton. But moreover Kuon just tweaks and experiments enough with the gameplay to make it more interesting. Whether or not this detracts from the horror experience or not really depends on the user. After all Rule of Rose is beloved in horror circles but the gameplay is a complete mess. My assumption is that most people play horror games for the experience, and the gameplay could get in the way here. So this is a game kinda caught between the experience (something Uncharted excels at) and the gameplay (something very few games excel at). The experience overall probably outweighs the gameplay. There are some moments where it's better to hide, but they are pretty few and far between. This game certainly isn't Haunting Ground. There are boss fights and I feel like the best thing you can do is use your summons (don't waste them otherwise and use the spike for regular enemies) which will attack them and also distract them giving you a chance to hit. Just attacking them with your spike or even the polearm you get later seems like it would be a fool's errand but I'm sure someone has beat the game that way before, it just wasn't me. Some of the bosses are insanely creepy but it's kind of hard to take them in because the gameplay is such that you can dumpster them by playing well. There is no real forced structure or staging to the fight like there is in some other horror games. Going back to RE, that series is much better at boss delivery for THE EXPERIENCE. Though I do have to say after one boss when a woman pops out of the dead flesh of the thing you just killed, I screamed loudly.

Overall, I give it an 8/10. One last thing: PLAY IT IN JAPANESE AUDIO.

Still not ready for me to buy, but I will keep an eye on this. I like the design of the Analogue systems too much.

Speaking of Analogue, what do you guys think their next system will be? I am leaning towards a cheaper NES FPGA, N64, or PCE.

I have all the retro consoles configured with RGB and scart out to OSSC > HDMI. I'll probably stick with that setup until there's finally an all in one FPGA with cartridge slots that outputs HDMI (+analogue would be a nice bonus). That's really the holy grail.

He's gone on record saying that there were no plans to release another NT Mini, but hopefully, he's just talking about the original NT models, and that there's still a chance for a brand new design.

My co-worker thinks it'll be another 16-bit console. The NES is trivial to emulate, there's another FPGA NES clone on the market (the AVS), and the demand probably suffers as a result. I'd trade in my AVS in a heartbeat, though. The design is so unrefined compared to Analogue's products.

I imagine the bit width of the N64 makes it an unlikely next product. PC Engine would make a lot of sense, but it's a blip compared to the SNES and Genesis, and the CD add-ons that add a lot of value to the platform are harder to track down than a Sega CD.

@DefaultGen senpai told me the AVS > NT or something like that.

@Renaissance2K I'll be interested to see how they handle it if they do PCE. There are so many CD solutions for it. There's no way it will be integrated so the console needs to have the EXT bus connector and be small enough to fit in an IFU because that's much more ideal and cost effective than tracking down a NEC Super CD-ROM 2 . Of course it would be simply the best if it was able to have CD bios selection (too many reasons to list) and could boot up roms and isos from an SD card.

Genesis has built in RGB and the Mega Sg costs more than an OSSC, so real hardware about the same price as the Analogue. At least some of the appeal of these is similar to the Classic Edition consoles of "Ermagahhhd tiny Nintendo Sixtahh Fourrr". If you really cared about having an HDMI N64, you wouldn't need to wait years for an FPGA implementation.

I mean, call me crazy but I use my $200 FPGA NES to play all the NES games and use all the NES accessories, also sure some of the fancy features the Nt doesn't have like interpolation is nice. If you're just looking for a casual experience that's almost as good as an average emulator, $1000 on an Analogue Nt is great wink

I made a video about the Sirius Movie CD, a failed media format. Not retro gaming but I think you guys will find it interesting.

The music in that port's awesome. Honestly overall just a solid port.

Sega Genesis prices on the rise. Wonder if it's more fallout from the mega sg release. Looking at hyperstone heist and moonwalker in particular.

I was looking at Valis and some others like Contra, SOF3 myself and noticed they took a nice jump in price....I was like *sigh*

Wow...look at that spike for CIB Hyperstone Heist. Moonwalker is a little less dramatic. Castlevania Bloodlines is another good spike. Wish I had gotten Bloodlines sooner. Was constantly on my passive search list, but I probably won't own a copy at this point unless it's in trade.

I didn't think Valis was too bad. Just an earlier spike from all those Renovation completionists. Some other notable Renovation jumps are Elemental Master and Gaiares.

Valis is so incredibly good. That series literally just gets better. III is the pinnacle, I feel.

I bet @Antipop is pretty happy with what he paid for Bloodlines from me. Never sell games ever kids. @DiamondDave agrees.
