new Thread Description
Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.

Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.

Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!

Old Topic Description

This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Hit me up, we will workout some agreeable pricing.

Why do I have two copies of Evolution Worlds? One is sealed, one is not.

Why do I have two copies of Wind Waker? They are not the same. One of them has two more games included (OOT and Master Quest)

The Japanese games can go alone but Freeloader has to be the last or part of the Japanese bundle.

@ErickRPG Is there any noticeable lag via component for retro games on you 940e and LG Oled? I don't play well enough with precision required for speed runs, but I was just curious if you noticed any difference from your old sets. Mike Tyson's punch out comes to mind when I think about possible input delay.

both scored decent for lag. I'm not sure if component is the same but the 940e is supposedly really good at around 35ms. The LG is at about 50ms. But even at around 55ms I don't really notice and it feels good.

Does hacking the NESC fix the sound lag? If not, gimme NESTopia.

Moot point, have a Sharp NES TV, for redundancy. And doesn't NESC add input lag?

If not original hardware, FPGA.

Anyone have a modern co-op campaign recommendation for me and Ada PC / Windows / PlayStation 4? Has to be same screen, not split screen. Good co-op framerate and some amount of challenge are huge pros. The best stuff we've played recently is Overcooked and Snipperclips. Thinking about Divinity Original SIn.

Absolutely. If the NT Mini had a solid cart slot, though, probably not that. But the old analog systems, two less reasons to own a CRT, definitely. Mod the systems up and play your ass off. Enjoy those FDS games without having to worry about your stupid fudging piece of crap not doing what the fudge it's supposed to do.

This sounds legit, I think I cleared the first stage once? I'll have to pull a Philly D and just JUMP into it. And the first story of the day, by far the MOST requested story from my followers is the question, "Did Tad lose his game?" GameTZ RTT's GOTM was chosen as Astyanax, but it seems like he's having some... issues. To further explain, he skirted through the first three stages without much trouble but it sounds like he's hung up close to the start of Stage 4. And I'll pose the question to you; how do you think he's doing so far, and what are your thoughts on his chances of finishing the title before the end of April? I'd love to know your thoughts.

And that's actually where I'm gonna leave it; if you liked what you saw be sure to hit that LIKE button, if you loved what you saw, be sure to hit that SUBSCRIBE button, I love your faces and I'll see you tomorrow.

Astyanax down. I don't think this game should roadblock too many people because it has infinite continues and you don't lose any progress when you continue, so it basically has infinite lives. I also beat the final boss on my first try, so he's kind of a joke.

Here's how I feel strategy-wise, spoilerrrr (not really)

It's always worth waiting for your sword to recharge to full strength. Doing quick, low power chops is completely worthless. Make your hits count. Full power chops 1-hit most enemies and kill bosses quickly.

If Ninja Gaiden is like a 6/10, this is like a 3/10. Comparable to Monster in my Pocket I would say. Slightly harder, but balanced out with infinite lives. Game becomes way easier when you figure out my spoiler evil

4-1 is probably the longest and hardest level in the game, besides maybe the "maze" level at the end. Also, you only restart the level, not the "world" you're on! That's friendly.

4-1 definitely gets pretty spicy pretty quickly! But seems doable so far. Also, was I just not aware? This DEFINITELY seems like an entry in the Legendary Axe series. It's obviously not Makyo/Ankoku Densetsu... Is it literally spelled out as "The Lord of Kings" on Famicom, or is that just a translation?

I don't know the story there but seems like Makyou Densetsu (even though on wiki Victor Interactive Software is listed as the dev) is listed as one of their games.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aicom

So the resemblance isn't imagined. Also, ザ・ロード・オブ・キング is katakana for The Lord of King

Yep, saw they had the same lead developer upon further curiosity exploration and the mystery was more or less solved. The arcade game for Astyanax actually looks pretty dope

Golden Axe.

Forward, forward, attack with the OP pretty lady through the entire game just like Streets of Rage 2 with Axel. Then the final boss is tapping buttons hoping to grind his health before he grinds your credits. Freakin' beat 'em ups.

So Astyanax is like the American version of the Japanese console port of the spiritual successor to the arcade version of Legendary Axe. Did Lunar just accidentally pick two sorta related games?

DiamondDave
GameTZ Gold Subscriber 350 Trade Quintuple Gold Good Trader Has Written 4 Reviews

The Astyanax came first, if I'm reading the timelines correctly. NES was a port of the Arcade title, developer then made Legendary Axe. The Astyanax and Legendary Axe are two completely different games, other than all the mechanics being rather identical. With Legendary Axe, they relied more heavily on the NES title for, ahem, inspiration. So if anything, LA is the sequel to Astyanax, spiritually. And nearly literally.

Listening to the RTT podcast right now during commute, just realized I pronounced Lunar the normal way instead of Lun-Arrr, the way it should be pronounced when refferring to the game. I'd like to apologize for any Lunar fans who might have been offended. And also, I will keep pronouncing Ass-Tee-Yan-Ax, don't care about Astyanax fans.

I picked Legendary Axe as a bonus because I remember Asty resembled LA, and picked Golden Axe because you know, the whole axe theme.

The Astyanax was 1989 in arcades, Legendary Axe was 1988 though 🤔 I remember this fondly after looking it up on Google just now. Both games by Tokuhiro Takemori, who can forget him.

and if anyone was wanting to raid ErickRPG's mint games now is the time. The games I am selling that are absolutely pristine are my Nintendo GameCube games. Have black labels of some of the top games ever made. I also have very minty straight edged N64 games of the more affordable variety like Excitebike 64, 1080, Zero Hour, and a couple others.
