new Thread Description
Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.

Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.

Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!

Old Topic Description

This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

It sounds like none of us had played this before now. And the game can be finished in a half hour. It's a shooter!

We don't agree on much besides that Arrow Flash isn't a great shooter. Wheels like beat 'em ups too much. Gypsy doesn't even like the NES. DD likes SoR1 way more than any of us. I think Maniac Mansion is not great. When we do agree that a game like Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania is great it's usually because it is.

It barely made the cut as a game I would play and was my last place vote of games I actually voted for. So, I guess I voted for it kinda.

I was I want to say the 2nd or 3rd person to clear it for GOTM and very much laid out my own opinion formed after beating the game. I commented in the thread specifically about why I thought it was a bad game. I just didn't have fun playing it because the game provided no resistance to my death machine. I didn't read any reviews or look at any youtube videos before playing it.

Counterpoint to your sarcasm: DG and I both don't like Maniac Mansion, which everyone seems to love. Believe it or not like I said before I do just form my own opinions on games after playing them. HOWEVER there is usually a reason why widely loved games are that way. Doesn't mean they will appeal to everyone but games like Super Metroid and SOTN are extremely popular for a reason.

Btw on your previous point that I said no to, your suggestion to people not playing GOTM is to have more GOTM. Think about that. We shouldn't water it down by having more options when some people barely have enough time to clear one game. Plus it's not like that's all you have to play or w/e, anyone can feel free to post about/discuss w/e vintage game they are playing here.

Well heights induce MY vertigo so I still have a hard time climbing around in certain Tomb Raider games.

But I do still love Tomb Raider even when I miss a jumping ledge grab and plummet to my death. It's insane but it's worth it. I don't know if I could play Tomb Raider in virtual reality though.

The whole idea to GotM is so people can play together and talk about it. It may not be your favorite game, it may not even be a game you like after you beat it, but look at everyone participating despite not being their favorite game, and even criticizing it afterward. All is what I was looking for in GotM.

And once in a while you find a new favorite series/game out of it. Right @DefaultGen?

We have all the time that we actually choose to make for whatever we decide to do. So that's just silly. If you choose NOT to play a game and only blame it on time constraints that's literally bullcrap. If you want to spend all month playing something else (I personally play lots of semi competitive Facebook games all the time) if I didn't spend time playing those Facebook games of course I probably would have beaten Arrow Flash by now so I could have finally also finished Golden Axe and got my Gnome icon. Saying you don't have time is a cop out. Saying you choose not to make time is more accurate.

I couldn't guarantee I would play policenauts if I owned it UNLESS I wanted to play the other bonus games after it. This is the only game that I can definitely say I wouldn't play so far just based on its own merits. It looks fairly awful. The animation is just bad. I would have even tried to play the mutant virus despite what people keep saying about it. But I don't want to play policenauts even a little. It looks like torture. And you guys all seem to love it. That's what I don't get at all.

No it's not. Some people have very demanding jobs and/or kids to take care of. That's why picking a game like Shining Force would be a really tall ask. If someone only has maybe 60-90 minutes of free time a day, beating a 20 hour game in a month takes up almost all that time and doesn't leave room for much else. Heck, Policenauts if it does eventually win a vote is fairly hefty at around 12 hours so it might not be the best choice. Of course I think it will get some clears. DG and I for sure and I know many more plan to at least try it.

So everyone can have an opinion and what not but saying Policenauts' animation is bad without context is objectively wrong. Of course I already know you are trolling since you claimed NES cutscenes are better earlier. So the question becomes bad compared to what? It's not going to be able to compete with some of the best old animation, but it's on the Saturn and PS1... There are limitations of the hardware to consider which are going to cause compression artifacts in the video. You need to watch it via your console hooked up to a CRT, not youtube videos on w/e. What would be perfect is a Policenauts remaster. Rescan (or redo if needed) all the animation and release it on a far superior format.

Ok everyone PM me votes for game of the month. Rank your choices in order of preference #1 to #8. You can vote for all games. You can vote for one game. You can vote for any number in between. It is an instant runoff election so unlikely candidates are not penalized for being your top choices, Google it.

Nominations
Policenauts
Popful Mail
Astal
Aladdin
Sonic The Hedgehog 3
Pikmin 2
Balloon Kid
Prince of Persia

Those cut scenes from Ninja Gaiden do look way better to me. I do love Ninja Gaiden.

Art is beautiful or not in the eyes of the beholder. The art is ugly. It has nothing to do with any limitations of the system. Hire new artists who can make the game look better maybe. I mean hell Braindead 13 on jaguar cd looks a hundred times better than Policenauts.

Just because you don't much like NES doesn't mean I wasn't being completely serious and honest.
I spent at least two minutes watching policenauts and I also skipped around in the "playthrough" I'd never seen
It before and it is rather repulsive. The story must be amazing because everything else looks like you guys seriously
must be joking.

Also don't compare 20 hours of Shining Force to anything when you're trying to get people to spend 11 hours on this "game".
It's the same exact thing. Choice of what you spend your time doing. It's bullcrap. Everybody here plays video games probably every single day. If you choose to play policenauts that's on you I choose not to. If you choose to play any games of the month it's your choice, but you will never convince me to vote for that game over literally any other game that's ever been nominated. Yes I would play maniac mansion over this any day. But it wasn't a game I voted for and I didn't even bother getting a copy after what @DefaultGen said about it.

You guys have been talking about policenauts for two months and it's literally probably the worst game (from what I saw) that's been nominated since this has started.

I had never heard of it until I saw it posted here. That was when I knew I had to have it!

My votes for the month are in. Only did 5, since there was only 5 games this month I could see myself getting to. Maybe if one of the others win I'll still give it a go!

Huge part of the reason I joined this thread was to find some games I've never tried! I want to open my gaming horizon, and am always looking for suggestions.

Pikmin 2 is a fun game, it even received 90% metacritic score. I have 100% complete both 1 and 3 and had a blast the entire time. Collecting the treasures never felt like a chore, it was fun with some challenge without being frustratingly challenging. I am confident 2 is just as good based on what the reviews say.

http://www.metacritic.com/game/gamecube/pikmin-2

Here is a nice video review for those on the fence. Pikmin 2 is a fun game smile

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yq5cVPrGyK0

I don't know why you say 12+ hours for Pikmin 2 is so horrible, but spending 12+ hours on Policenauts somehow will be enjoyable? Isn't Policenauts gameplay similar to Maniac Mansion, a game you all seemed to hate?

I'm not exactly a Policenaut-head but BV, what exactly is wrong with its art direction?? It looks like a typical Anime you would find in the 90s, and the art generally considered pretty incredible. It still holds up quite well in modern times.

Do you hate anime in general?

No, I don't hate anything. I'm definitely not a fan of anime but I'm trying to get into some of it. It's just this game is unattractive to me. There are many animated things I don't like and some I love. Like in popful mail I didn't like the elf girls face but I did like the landscape of her running up the mountain. That was a cool effect. When I saw the gameplay of popful mail it looked very interesting to me.

I don't even like that gimmicky mode 7 stuff they tried to do on the snes, but the weird thing is as much as I thought I preferred the snes I may actually like the graphics and art design on the Genesis better. One of my favorite things about sonic 1 over Mario World was the amazing backgrounds. In Sonic 2 it looked even better than sonic 1 and it played way better as well. Sure I prefer Marios gameplay but even with better graphics I liked the levels and characters better in Super Mario 2 and 3. I felt like the art direction in Mario World wasn't as appealing to me.

Art aesthetics are important to me in a game and if it's totally unattractive to me it's really hard to get into. Ive played some very weird games and loved them though. But just from what I saw the only thing I could possibly find interesting is the storyline if it's good.

I can't say I hate it because I haven't played it, (I couldn't hate it even if I did) but that game does not look good to me in the slightest.

I just watched a video (finally) its gorgeous 😊 Does it ever speed up though? The main character moves a little slow. It reminds me of Rayman with those awesome graphics though.

I probably would have bought it when I had a Saturn if I had the money then. Of course I would have bought Shining Force 3 first but neither one was cheapback then.

You did call the art horrendous, so I was just trying to see if you just didn't like Japanese animation.

In other news, you mentioned the two series I am going to do a Series Attack(remember this?) on.

I mentioned it before about a Series Attack, where I am going to play a particular series in chronological order.

I am going to do this with two series' at the same time, alternating between them so I don't get burnt out.

Sonic the Hedgehog vs. Super Mario Bros.

Hopefully I can get a consistent streaming schedule set up.

Well the series attack should be pretty cool for sure. I know I'm not the biggest fan of the gameplay in Sonic 1 because one of the best things it has going for it is when you can gain speed and run wild in a level. There's too many places you get stopped by things.

Mario 1 is really not attractive in a lot of ways but you can sprint full speed a lot which is pretty cool. Also there's a TON of Easter eggs and weird little movement tricks you can do in the first Super Mario Bros which kind of make up for the graphics. Like the Gumby slide was always a crowd pleaser 😉

Instant-runoff voting (IRV) is a voting method used in single-seat elections with more than two candidates. Instead of voting only for a single candidate, voters in IRV elections can rank the candidates in order of preference. Ballots are initially counted for each elector's top choice, losing candidates are eliminated, and ballots for losing candidates are redistributed until one candidate is the top remaining choice of a majority of the voters. When the field is reduced to two, it has become an "instant runoff" that allows a comparison of the top two candidates head-to-head.

I was just thinking about series attack too, and since its something that would run over a long period, maybe that's where something with longer games could work in, then there isn't a time constraint of trying to fit it in a month. Mario and sonic are def obvious choices as the biggest mascot brands, the early ones don't look good but what did in the mid 80s really.

yakuza and Ys are two series im going to try and do quite a bit of over the next year, two series I haven't played and have always wanted to, just started yakuza kiwami and its amazing. I know those are too big for the actual series attack though.

I don't think there are many if any miss-able side stories but just check online for that.

I'm going to leave voting open for one more day because I said I'd give warning but there's already an overwhelming winner, so unless like 7 people sign up for GameTZ and vote for Policenauts, it's already decided.

I feel like there's only 3-4 people in RTT with access to a Saturn, so I find it funny that these games keep hitting the nomination list.

Policenauts is in second place. I miscounted, if only 6 more people vote for Policenauts and none of them rank the current winner higher, it will be Policenauts surprise

Do you mean frequent participators or anyone on the who is on box?

Because in the who is online box I know at least 14 people in there that for sure have a Saturn.

Saturn is easier to play cdrs on original hardware but PS1 emulation is gas. Either way, it's plenty accessible.

Most games we've nominated are fairly approachable legitimately. Saturn games aren't, hardly ever. Just seems weird.

The game that's going to win is $10 max btw. I think it will be a popular month again. I'm going to clear it for sure.

I mean, is there anyone in the thread that could even play through a retail copy of Policenauts without a guide?

Which is another reason why I wonder why it shows up so frequently. That's not much of an RTT GOTM title imo but it keeps getting nominated. I hope it never wins but I get this feeling eventually it will.

This is just my opinion mind you. I don't think Saturn games are good GOTM candidates, that's all. You know me, I'll spin that crap on an emu without a second thought, but I'm questioning how many people here will actually drag the Saturn out and either pay for these games or has the stuff to burn it instead. If it's a playable game, it's generally stupid expensive.

that's the key for the Saturn games, emu, Saturn emu may never be perfect but a lot of games are playable just fine. when it eventually happens oyubause will be there. that's how id have played astal as well if it won.

I think Saturn keeps coming up because though the system itself had some troubles due to lots of factors there are a lot of quality titles and there are a lot of sega kids here.

What? Of course I could pass it without a guide (if I actually wanted to play it) I'm sure anyone here could. Why are we so dependent on other people playing games for us?

You said it was a 12 hour game, now you're saying the only way to beat it is with a guide? That sounds like way more than 12 hours to me if someone doesn't "know" that it can't be passed without a guide.

Okay. Do it. Play an adventure game in Japanese without any help. I await your game clear screen shot.
