new Thread Description
Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.

Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.

Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!

Old Topic Description

This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

Windjammers 2 is a thing. One problem: DotEmu is publishing it.

So either it's going to be a good game, or it's going to be a good game with bugs that will never get fixed because DotEmu took the money and ran away until the next game they repeat the process with.

Wtf, Windjammers 2. That's amazing. I sure hope the art doesn't suck. Cartoony graphics can range from cheap-ass mobile game to Guilty Gear Xrd, so it's hard to tell from still images.

Shenmue Sega Dreamcast

No one is saying it's the SNES but it's more respectable than some people would lead you to believe.

Donkey Kong Country on the Super Nintendo (also on Snes Classic)

If it's playable it's completely overpriced, just like Saturn. Bad systems hoarded by bad people.

I thought we were going for animal characters. I love Rayman I thought about him
For last month and Voodoo Vince? I didn't even think of him. 😢
I have always wanted to play that game though.

My other thoughts were Conkers Bad Fur Day, Banjo Kazooie both easily
Available on Rare Replay or Yoshis Island also available on Snes Classic.

Also I just read that Earthbound and Yoshis Island can maybe be played
With two players on Snes Classic. Were either of these games originally
Two players? I technically have yet to play either.

Price shouldn't be a factor in judging a console game library.

Alright, if we disallow one of the hugest, non-arguable downsides to Saturn and Sega CD acquisition, the loadtimes are atrocious, the hardware's fickle, and the crap-to-okay ratio's like 6:1 (GENEROUS) for SCD and 5:1 for Saturn, and other than a small handful of first party titles, most of the good Saturn crap was on Playstation and performed better. and is available there for a fraction of the cost, but I'm not allowed to talk about that.

I always struggle to find more than a dozen or so exclusive titles for each that I'd even consider to be worth owning, same issue I have with N64. There's too much crap. Saturn, at least Sega had a really decent-ish first party showing; Sega CD is a barren wasteland of bad feels and Sewer Sharks.

Saturn also had a respectable import scene which is what wins over the PS1 library for me. As much as I did like PS1, it just looks too much like crap. Saturn, at least you just avoid the 3D polygons.

Saturn Import's a whole 'nother ballgame. At that point it becomes somewhat respectable. If not for the moon speak. They did good with the Capcom library, although that quickly got overshadowed by the Dreamcast which just kinda blows the Saturn out of the water without even fudging trying.

That's my benchmark. Sega CD and Saturn are like water up to my ankles; Dreamcast it's a twelve-footer. SCD, you need to whip out the tweezers and magnifying glass to find a couple strands of golden hair inside the huge piles of horse crap.

Dark Wizard, Earthworm Jim, Fatal Fury Special, Final Fight CD, Flink, Keio Flying Squadron, Lunar, Lunar Eternal Blue, Popful Mail, Road Avenger, Robo Aleste, Shining Force CD, Snatcher, Sol-Feace, Sonic CD, Terminator. Admittedly many of these aren't exclusive.

Sure Sewer Shark and Night Trap are crap but w/e.

Saturn you should be embarrassed for not finding 12+ exclusives. Not sure I even need to go there with a list. ;)

I love the Dreamcast and still have triple digit games for it but the Saturn import library is better.

Iunno, maybe you should... I get a feeling like N64 most of them are going to be first party. Say Super Hydelide so I can beat you within an inch of your e-life.

I'd argue that while the import library makes Saturn better, it doesn't fix the Not Much To Playitis, especially considering many of the "better" titles aren't really playable, other than SOTN and the Capcom Arcade conversions, due to language constraints. Couple shmups? Most of the good crap got a stateside release, and the list is still pretty meh to wah. To me, even the domestic-only Dreamcast release list is light years ahead. Even the "bad" games are very, very good in comparison (to most of the "playable"). Draconus, Time Stalkers, Silver...

ROAD AVENGER? SERIOUSLY?

If someone handed me a grand to spend on Dreamcast, A. I'd be very happy, and B. it'd be very easy to hit a grand and still be like "Ugh, but I want more..." Still, even the more expensive DC titles rarely hit Saturn prices, so that's something. I think the most expensive DC title's something like a hundy? Unless it's some bullcrap 12 people ever got a chance to own.

Giga Wing 1 and 2, Mars Matrix, Gunbird 2, Power Stone 2 (ugh), Skies of Arcadia, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Cannon Spike (ugh), pretty much the only games that touch above $50.

Power Stone 2 is a $30 if you let it be.

Cannon Spike and Giga Wing 2 are two of the games, but I'll just wait for an eBay sale/big eBay bucks of course. The other two are Twinkle Star Sprites and Cosmic Smash. Which were two of the games that I really killed a Dreamcast with by playing burns. Those 4 are...pretty much what I want to just finalize my DC. I've always been on again off again with Mars Matrix, I can definitely live without it. That's for expensive games anyway. I should get Puzzle Bobble 4 but that should be doable for ~$20.

My lord, Gunbird 2 has shot up ATROCIOUSLY. I remember when it was like $35-40 for a US copy. FeelsBummerMan.

@WithinTemptation Nice nomination! It's not going to win, but I'm putting it in my top vote slot.

Wasn't even that long ago, then people remembered it's a good shmup and stopped listing it at chump change. That's the thing, if it's not selling because of lack of demand, if everyone reaches a consensus on pricing it WAY higher, easy free money. Prospective buyers see that and go "Wow, must be a rare gem, need it now." Honestly with the market where it is, I think a lot of DC titles are "undervalued", but don't take that as a complaint. ROLW and Bangai-O should both be in the 80s range if a title like Gunbird is.

Yeah. Bangai-O is one that has NEVER left my collection, which is saying something. I confirmed and it's add date to my collection here matches my join date. I want to say I bought it in like 2006 but I can't be sure. It's got to be close to being one of the longest tenured games in my collection.

I don't have the same love for ROLW but it's not a bad buy at all for 30 something.

Genres that no one else gives a ff are where it's at. The absolute best puzzle and pinball games cost next to nothing on Saturn and DC. Twinkle Star unfortunately has shmup splashover syndrome but it is a fantastic game at least.

@DiamondDave brace your butthole. Bangai-O is $90 now. It's firmly getting into swap it for a Japanese copy range. One of the reasons I didn't do that in the past is because the Japanese version used to be more expensive than the US version.

Well, you'll want to note that Langrisser is fairly hardcore and is nothing like any mainstream RPG you've ever played. It's not really a "check it out" kind of game, it's a "Whoa this is totally my jam" kind of game. (It's totally not my jam)

Careful with the art style, the new artist isn't very good at preserving the original aesthetic of the games they remake. I think it's gonna lose a lot of its appeal, so hopefully you like the game more for the mechanics.

Odds are you didn't since there isn't a release for the series on PSP. You are probably thinking of Growlanser IV. A weak entry in the Growlanser series that the stiff translation from Atlus didn't help.
