well, it is just a portable, but it is really difficult to guage what kind of demand there is for the PSP. After the "gotta have it" crowd gets their psp, then we will see how well the PSP sells.
I own one, i have to admit, it is pretty nice, i plan to get a memory stick and watch movies on the PSP(stuff that isnt available on dvd), it has a really nice quality screen. The umd movies supposedly all have a msrp of $30(!) and i have a very hard time believing that they will sell many of those at all
As for the games, lumines is my favorite game, i also like need for speed.
I will say this: the only reason why i bought one was because ebgames had a really crazy promotion in february- they were giving an extra $5 in credit for ANY next gen game(no sports games) when you traded in games. I traded in so many of those pennied out jampacks and 99 cent xbox xhibitions, as well as a lot of cheap games to pay for my psp, i think only someone with a lot of cash to blow would drop $250(+ tax) on a hand held.
there is another really good promotion going on at ebgames for PSP games: trade in any 3 non pox games, and get a new sony brand PSP game from this list: ape escape, wipeout, twisted metal, world soccer, atv, gretzky, nba, mlb.
And yeah, they are still accepting the xbox xhibitions as part of that offer. So it is pretty easy to take advantage of ebgames offers and get a psp+ 8 games for next to nothing. There is no way i would be buying all these games at msrp, i am only paying a fraction of that.

The two GameStops near me don't have any in stock, but they are still taking reservations for their next shipment. On DS release day, they had more systems than they did for PSP, but were taking reservations for at least a month away. That's just my area, obviously, but it indicates it is not doing great. | dracula

if you are having a hard time getting one(unlikely) you can get them from www.bestbuy.com for $229
Best buy gives $10 off a purchase over $100, or $20 off a purchase over $200(psp is $250 msrp)
they come back in stock early in the morning but sell out pretty quick.

There's plenty in stock around me, I'm actually a bit surprised. Everywhere I went still had lots of units to sell. Either Sony actually made enough to meet the demand, or the demand just wasn't there. I'm curious to see which it will be.

Because of all the hype about PSP I was like this can't be possible. That article at IGN seemed like it was written up by Nintendo fanboys.
But I guess considering the huge price tag on the PSP I guess its a little pricy.
Surprisingly though I thought it would do bettor here in the states then it would in Japan.
But that Ridge Racer game looks pretty damn cool though.. gotta love RR

The DS RR sucks
I actually almost picked up a PSP yesterday. What actually stopped me is being able to look at the extra $60 worth of "bonus" pack crap. That turned me off. The store associate that helped me out opened it up for me so we could take a look at the contents. There is nothing included I'm interested in except possibly the case, which I didn't think was that hot either. By the time my wife and I walked with the PSP and 1 game up to the register line, we had decided we didn't find the system worth it and simply dropped it off with the cashier so they could get someone to put it back in the case.
I think if we had not been able to open up the box we would have bought it, but after seeing what you really get right out of the box kinda takes away the surprise I guess. In this case, I'm glad.

I agree, think that price tag turned off many people. I would never pay that much for a handheld. I have only once for a console(ps2). I'll just wait for a few months when the game list is larger and better and price is lower. The next batch of PSPs that Sony releases will most likely be better as well. Look at the launch PS2s and Xboxs compared to the ones after. Hardware was better.

| | #10 posted March 27, 2005 at 3:06pm (EST) |
Thats true the price tag is definatly a turn off for many... I was actualy considering getting one myself but looking at the price over here it cost 375$ so I was like thats insane.. cost as much as a PS2 when it first came out.... and I don't even have a PS2 at the moment....
So what do you guys think? How do you think the PSP and the DS compare?

If they wouldn't have bundled in the extra junk, I really think they would've done better. Would've knocked the price down a wee bit. Hell, if my wife and I both got one of these, we'd have 3 freakin' Spiderman 2 movies including the dvd we already have. And considering every PSP has one packed in pretty much guarentees you're never gonna be able to get rid of the damn thing either. Sorry, the movie wasn't good enough to warrent 3 purchases.

here are my opinions on the psp vs ds
psp has a much better library at present time, and seems to have good third party support.
nintendo ds has some nice first party games like super maio 64(havent played yoshi or warioware touched, but they are supposed to be good0, and sega made a nice game for the system(feel the magic) but other than that the system really suffers from a small library.
As for the pictochat, or the online capabilities, it doesnt have any.
the psp can be used to play mp3s and watch movies from a memory stick. (ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR)
the ds is just for playing games at present time, but i imagine they could come up with some sort of palm pilot software, turn the ds into an organizer of sorts.
As mentioned, the PSP is more expensive, if they sold the stand alone system(no extras) for $150, then they would probably sink the DS(but really the DS is just supposed to tide us over until the next gameboy?)
I will say that both systems have some nice upcoming games that I am interested ing: ds has castlevania ds and katamari damacy ds, psp has Ys arc of napishtim, and hopefully a castlevania game as well.
The PSP can play umd movies, which will retail for $30, and no doubt be a total flop.
if you are just looking for a portable game machine, then get the DS, but if you want to make use of the PSP;'s other features(like the watching movies or playing MP3s), then the psp would suite you better.
My big complaint about the psp is that it has no protection for the screen, and they only offfer the value pack, that has crapty extras as mentioned.
the libraries for the games so far are pretty lame, and mostly rehashes.

Good assessment Drac. looking way into the future I see the PSP being the greatest handheld on the market handsdown. Once it's library reaches over 50 games and the movie prices drop forget about it .

i dont think the umd movies will ever drop in price, sony spent a small fortune developing the technology and are trying to charge an arm and a leg for the movies to pay for it.
It is more likely that the umd movies will never catch on, they will become obselete like the laserdisc format, either that or they will eventually drop in price. I imagine stores like ebgames and gamestop will sell the umd movies used, for cheaper, but if the movie studios dont make money on the sales of the umd movies(bc no one buys them) then there is little reason for them to support that format.
I am guessing that sony will sell the PSP for $150 as a non value pack for the holidays. the DS will probably drop to $100 for the holidays, or nintendo will give up on it all together and concentrate on the new gameboy.

I see your point about the movies unless the technology becomes cheaper to produce which would take several years. Serious bomb on Sony's part. They cant really think anybody least of all gamers would spend the same ammount on a movie they would a new game.

the Play-Yan adapter will soon be here and it will only be $50, which the DS is still cheaper than the PSP

Actually, if you cut out the extra BS with the PSP, it would come out as the same as the DS with a Play-Yan. I think anyone would honestly prefer a PSP for their multimedia purposes instead of a DS with an odd-ball adapter. We just gotta wait for Sony to cut the fat from their system.

Yes they will, they are counting on the hype to push through alot of cheap accessories. It is simple marketing. Eventually you will be able to buy the plain system for sure by the holdays.

the PSP will be fine, this thing rocks and I am not saying that has a fanboy
I am very impressed with it so far,
the only thing holding it back are the stupid UMD movies that they will push and nobody will care about, and the lack of great games, but that is only because the unit just came out. It had some good launch titles
I think it will do fine better than the DS come this fall
The launch for this was at an odd time, if this were near X-mas this thing would have been flying off the shelves

Honestly, I think the PSP will flop. Now, I'm not a Nintendo fan boy because I think if Nintendo doesn't get some more good stuff on the DS, it will become extinct too. The PSP does look spiffy, I'll give it that, but if all the things from the Japan launch are still in the US systems, a lot of people won't be happy that their large amounts of cash aren't working properly. I also think that the price kind of turned some people away from it. | citizen_zane

Once the new GB comes out, both will be extinct, and this will be a mood point. The DS is just there to be a spoiler so the PSP doesnt take the market away from Nintendo. It will have minimal support, but enough to keep interest in nintendo.

people keep saying you can play movies on the psp but unless you add 100$ to the price you really cant. I mean you need a minimum 1gb mem stick and that runs around 100$. As a result It is "just" a game machine. If it was able to play movies out of the box Id think about it. But bottom line once you buy this, a couple games and a memory stick you are really looking at 500$... And that is WAY different than a ds.
As for the umd movies, lets face it, that solution blows. Who wants to pay 30/pop for a new format that is inferior to dvd.
Personally I will wait for a while. I think the ds will be dead by next year, but this thing needs to drop in price. | lordkaosu

With the Play-Yan tho, doesn't it just use memory cards as well? Although I really can't remember much about it, maybe Kirby or someone that knows more about it can enlighten me again. But if it uses memory cards, then your again stuck with the same problem of having to buy a large enough card.
