I recently got a PS2 wireless controller.
I was told that it was in VG condition. Cosmetically, it is. But due to corrosion from leaky batteries in the past, it doesn't work. (Seller failed to mention the corrosion. )
Is there someway I can fix it?

pics of damage may help.
depends also if it is not making a good connection or if it was so bad it shorted something out but I may be able to help with some pics of the troubled area. |

I do controller mods and repairs so we should be able to figure out something unless it is fried from shorting somehow. |

The seller said that the controller worked fine before he took the batteries out to ship the controller to me.
Right now I'm waiting for a friend to return my camera so I can take the pictures.

Definitely clean the contacts, as was stated, the batteries could have poor contact. I have a gameboy color and had batteries in it for who knows how long and the batteries leaked. It would not turn on but once I cleaned it all up, it worked like new...Then again, gameboys are very very tough. Good luck with your controller.

well in the meantime take some fine grade sand paper and sand the battery contancts down a little until they shine where the battery toach's them.
if you have a dremel tool with a wire wheel or a polishing bit that would be even faster but you may need to take the parts out of the controller or risk bumping something with the tool in confined area's and the wire wheel will do a number on plastic real fast and leave a nasty mark.
after that take a Q-tip with some rubbing alcohol and scrub the place's you sanded clean.
another thought is sometime's the spings inside the battery pack compartment need to be pulled back out in the battery terminal but if you do that just pull them out a little to stretch the spring back out but to pull them to hard or to far just a tad is plenty.
just try cleaning it first though to see if that is all in needed before pulling on the springs.
also do any of it lights come on if there are any?

The springs look rusty. Could that be the problem?
On the controller, the lights do not come on. On the reciever there is one blinking red light and one steady green light.
(Still waiting for my friend to return camera. )

yeah they wont make a good contact through corrosion or corroded spings if you clean the point that the battery actually toach's then it may work but the way it sounds so far there not getting any power. |

The batteries were brand new. I even tested them in another item after I couldn't get the controller working.
I'll try the sandpaper tip. What grade should I use? Will I have to take the controller apart?

it may help to take it apart but if you can sand where the battery actually toach's then that would be fine also.
pretty much any kind of sand paper will work you just need to sand it down to clean fresh metal is all and then the alcohol with clean it that much more when done and if it dont work after you have done that then either the corrosion was so bad it broke the solder point where the part goes into the PCB or it had shorted and fried something wich would make the controller useless,
worst case if needed I have two like new 3rd party wireless controllers with reciever for $20.00 shipped and I will garuntee they work or your money back. |
