I don't mean to break this to you but, this game was never imported to the us -- most of its actual development at Mistwalker was abroad in the States. Even the character's lips where synced to a English script as default. After all, Mistwalker came about when a Final Fantasy director over at Square confronted the President of Square, and ended with him joining forces with an ex-RPG composer and the front-man for the Dragon quest/warrior games after meeting them months later [by chance] at a friends party in California. They came to the US [Hawaii and CA specifically] and started up the company in a matter of years, spitting out their first game, Blue Dragon, on the XBOX 360 in winter of 07, shortly after Namco released Eternal Sonata on the same system.
The XBOX 360 also has seen more WRPG and JRPG's than the PS3 and Wii combined, I would hardly call the 360 lacking there. Infact, Microsoft has made great strides to attract Role-players from PS2 era -- who where the sole reason the PS2 continued dominated the Xbox.
Yes, Lost Odyssey was amazing, I agree. But it's my personal opinion that it deserves no higher than a A- because of pacing and issues with its broken plot.
Plus, when you write a review, always place you're mindset in the time that the game was released, not in the present. In late spring "07, Lost Odyssey was one of only three games [on the xbox 360] sporting 'Unreal Graphics' and was only the third JRPG released in the U.S [Ubisofts JRPG Enchanted Arms doesn't count because it wasnt even designed by the Japanese] -- so naturally it looked unbelievable and was clearly the best JRPG yet. Now we have games like Fable 2, Tales of Vesperia and Fallout 3 [yes, I know its multiplatform], plus, contrary to you're review almost every major critic agrees that both Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant where [though plagued by technical issues] both highly original and highly successful titles -- The Last Remnants Battle system even received great praise for being revolutionary for the genre. And I noticed you totally dismissed Star Ocean -- The Last Hope, which is by far the most brilliant JRPG released on a next-gen console period, and if the first title to run on Final Fantasy XIII's Source and graphics Engine -- It also features a lot of the same voice actor's, and was developed by alot of the same people working on FFXIII. And don't forget that it's script, voice acting, Item management system, and Battle system are light years beyond Lost Odyssey.
I worry about people who dismiss all the great games I mention above. Especially someone who complains that the 360 is lacking RPGs -- look at Mass Effect for goodness sakes [considered by some to be the best produced, written, scripted, executed, acted, and received RPG in History, period]. The playstation 3 only has a handful of ports of previously XBOX 360 exclusives like Eternal Sonata, Enchanted Arms, Overlord and Oblivion. Yes they have a obscure game called CrossSlash, disgaea 3 and Valkyrie chronicles, but show me something else, like White Knight Chronicles or something. Even the upcoming FFXIII is receiving a xbox 360 release, and like most cross platform games, its common knowledge that most of Square Enix's dev time has been spent fine tuning the game for the XBOX 360 -- because they expect to sale literally millions more copies for the XBOX. Face it, Sony fudged up PS3 sales with crap marketing and no third party games -- why would any game company choose for the PS3 port of their game to get the most attention and talented hands during development [there-go, becoming the better/solid port], when practically no one has one? With the 360 you've got massive market appeal and original xbox owners still jealous of PS2 owners, and wanting to finally see what all this RPG hub-bub is about.
But, back on subject.
I don't mean to critze and I'm not insulting you're opinion of the game, I love the game too [I would even say it's easily one top 20 best RPGs ever released this decade]. So I'm not saying Lost Odyssey isn't amazing [I would certainly give it a great review], but Revolutionary?...I hardly would call anything but it's story and character development that. Maybe Fable 2?...yes, ..yes, Fable 2 is definitely Revolutionary....even Fallout 3 is revolutionary.....why don't you review one of them? |
