I went through the exact same ordeal after college. I thought never owning a credit card through college was a good idea, and boy was I wrong.

I started slowly by getting things like a Sears Card (though I was declined the first time) and other store-run credit programs to build up easy credit by buying a normal purchase on it and paying it off right away. The first step, though was keeping a good track record with utility payments as was mentioned before. I also made sure to have a close relationship with my banker at my local branch to give me advice and suggestions, and helping me get a bank credit card and set up an RRSP to really build positive credit quickly.

It's a bit of a slow road, but you'll get there. I now have absolutely no problems with credit - it's now a challenge to keep people away from me who offer me credit cards left and right! And I have never ever kept a balance on my credit card.

Just take it slow, live within your means, and try to never over-extend yourself.
