So as of a few days ago, my internet connection has been acting weird. I have a 7MBps (advertised) connection and everything is functioning fine, except for when I try to download via torrents. I normally max out around 350 to 400KBps, but since a few days ago ive been maxing out at 47KBps. Http downloads are at their usual speed. Its just torrents. Any ideas?

For reference I have Verizon DSL and Im using a Westell Versalink Gateway/Wireless Router.

The speed of torrents is directly related to the amount of seeders and peers and what speeds they have
their uploads set for. If you're downloading something obscure and there are only a handful of seeders/peers,
you won't get great speed.

Right, Ive been downloading from torrents for some time now, so i know the basics. Yesterday for example, I was downloading from 92 seeds and was still maxing around 47kbps. Its not the torrents that are the problem....im pretty sure anyway.

Comcast just got busted for fudging with people who use bittorrent. They are ending it at the end of this year.

Probably capped your connection. Happened to me when I had Cablevision and they denied there being a problem til I found out a friend of my wife's worked for Cablevision. I called them up, mentioned the capping and after a stutter and confusion they apologized and it went back to normal a few hours later.

Got a link or proof of this? I was using torrents to download stuff and they sent me a nasty email saying if they caught me doing it again they'd cut off our service and refuse to have me as a customer.
I've gotten around it by downloading on IRC servers and they don't seem to care.

Figured you knew that, but I always start at the basics. *raspberry*

Definitely sounds like 'traffic shaping'. Also, depending on the size of the files being downloaded, Comcast does "speed burst" which lets the first 10mb of a file fly by but then it slows down.

ArsTechnica article -- http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071023-comc...

Comcast is also considering caps on downloads. The dsl reports article below describes this as well as the current situation of people getting disconnect notices if they do excessive dl'ing.

It may be time to switch to a more torrent friendly ISP:

Fair enough.

After some googling and forum surfing Ive come to the conclusion that it is indeed my isp who's fudging up the works. I think ill give them a ring and see what the deal is.

I wonder if this is happening to me. Ive had Verizon DSL for like 4 yrs or something. When I 1st got it I think the speed I was allowed was like 700 and something kbps, but never really got over 400. Well a few months ago, I had canceld Verizon momentarily for like 2 months. Wehn I got them back I redid my whole phone/internet package. Im paying the maximum amopunt for the highest DSL they offer, which is 36.99. They advertise I am suppose to be getting 4 MBps. But im only getting around 300-400 kbps. In the past when I noticed this I called them and they gave me alot of bullcrap. Said everything is showgin fine on their end and I should be getting the max speed. I have even bought a greater modem, that didnt help, they said maybe you have a virus, I bought McAffee for $50, used it, nope, no virus. They sent someone out after I complained more and they checked my connections at home and said everything was installed right, but this was before they try to walk me over the phone to do it myself. So after all this bullcrap I have given up with them. Theres been so many phone calls Im just tired of it. But it pisses me off that I dont get nowhere near the speed I am suppose to get.

The links that were posted from DSLreports is where I found it. I wondered why the hell they kept sending me crap. I wish Verizon FIOS would get to my area, Comcast is the only option I currently have.

Can never be too safe. I've read stories of the RIAA coming after people with as few as 10 songs...hate to see what they would do with 10,000 +.
