So.... I've got this "problem." I have quite a collection of games (as you can tell if you visit my collection page) that I have yet to finish (or begin, in some cases). Yet I continually purchase new ones, so my collection keeps growing. I don't have a lot of time on my hand, especially to play the probably 65 + games I own that I haven't finished.

Anyone else have this problem? Constantly adding to one's collection at a MUCH faster rate than one can finish the games already in said collection? What can I do to address this problem?

I had that problem a while back, although currently I don't (I got rid of all my gaming stuffs for the exact reason you stated, as well as some others). The only reason I'm still here is I'm waiting for one trade to clear up.

I'll say this: it feels bloody great. I always felt like I had this responsibility to play through all the games I kept purchasing. I would buy buy buy, but inevitably I would always get bored with whatever game I was playing. Even GTAIV got stale for me, if that says anything.

Give it some serious thought. Decide if you even like gaming anymore. Perhaps you do, but from what you've said so far, it sounds like your interest is waning. I'm not saying sell it all like I did, but just figure out what your priorities in life are right now (you said yourself you don't have a lot of time on your hands). If gaming actually is high up on your list, bump something else off that is taking up time you could be spending playing videogames.

Yeah, I've currently got 63 Xbox 360 games.... 47 of which I have yet to even open, let alone play. No idea when I'm ever gonna get around to it.... I have a son now and I'm lucky if I get a spare 20 minutes in the evening to play anything.
That's just my 360 collection. I've got hundreds more for PS2, PS3, PSP, DS, GC, XB, Saturn, Genesis, SNES, PC.... yet I keep buying games that come out..... *frown*

Y'all know what I blame it on though? Games today are too fudgein' long. Back in like the NES/SNES days, you had games like Contra III where you could beat it in like an hour, but you wanted to keep replaying it after. Today, if a game's single player campaign doesn't last at least 15 hours, it's considered "too short" and should probably just be rented instead. Most games run 20+ hours with little-to-no replay value.

I don't know if it's just because I'm a nostalgic gamer, but I would much rather have a tight gaming experience than one that has been stretched out to give it more "value". I don't want to be sitting around playing videogames 24/7, but the way they're being made today, I pretty much have to if I want to experience even just the most highly praised games. That's the main issue I have. Back in the day, I could experience 5 or 6 games in the same amount of time it takes me to fully experience 1 game today.

I feel really old typing everything I just typed, but hopefully someone agrees with me out there.

Same here. In fact, that's why I try to withdraw whatever paypal funds I get from selling stuff here fairly quickly. It helps curb the tendency to impulse buy stuff (you still have cash or money orders but the non-instant transfer aspect of it works as a deterrent). That doesn't help much with sites like Goozex though.

I definitely still enjoy gaming... my post was in no way intended to indicate otherwise. It's just I'm buying games quicker than I can beat them, so I do constantly beat games, but I'm also constantly expanding my collection. I think a lot of it comes from people I know saying "OMG you've never played Kingdom Hearts?! Dude it's AWESOME go buy it now you won't regret it" and me believing them (btw, I currently own KH, KHII, and KH:CoM - I'll get around to them).

I think my problem is I'm too interested in gaming, and it wants to suck up more time than I can allow it to.

Good advice - short, sweet, and to the point.

Thanks all for the advice. I think now that I'm basically done with school for the semester, I've got a lot of good gaming time on my hands to do my best with catching up. We'll see where I am when summer's done. *yes*

I have the same problem but to a lesser extent. Even though I had recently traded for 3 new games I felt so compelled to go out and buy GTA IV and couldn't wait a little while. Now I think of all the great games coming out for the 360 in the next few months plus the older ones that I haven't played yet and I'm disappointed that I won't get a chance to enjoy all of them. A few years ago I might have had the time to go through all these games but I hardly have any time to play anymore.

I have tons. I tend to clear out every other system generation. Collection currently:

-- 5 Xbox, 30 Xbox 360
-- Few hundred DVD's
-- Few hundred CD's
-- 30 or so PSP titles
-- Few Hundred PC Games

I've been buying these zippered holders that hold 100 jewel cased cd's. I'm placing all my classic (pry from my dead fingers) type of pc games. Everything else gets played and traded.

But I own other items:

-- Political Items Collection (Hillary Nutcracker, stuffed Dubya Doll, Singing Kerry Doll, Trading Cards, Wind up Wackin Willy, Battling Bush Inflatables, Pins, Books, Sample Ballots, Magazines, Talking Clinton Doll, and more)
-- Big Events Collection (This is a mash up of items about 9/11, miniature replicas of landmarks hit in 9/11, pre-katrina new orleans books & tour guides, and more)
-- David Winters Imported Houses, Miniature Houses, Replica Cottages
-- Newspapers (Full newspapers -- disasters, inaugurations, political misprints, kennedy assassination headlines, nixon resignation, pearl harbor, etc)

So actually I pack away much more then video games. I figure someday my kids will learn thru hands on with my collections, or I'll Ebay, possibly donate some to historical societies for tax write offs.

I used to do the same thing, hoard every possible game I can get my hands on. Now, I only keep a few games for each console then I rotate them out when I want something brand new. It accomplishes to things: 1, the video game collection stays manicured and 2, I always have new games.

I'm the king of this problem. If this were a contest, I'd have a trophy the size of a fudging Brontosaurus in my yard (maybe actually shaped like a Brontosaurus).

I'm willing to bet that out of my 1333 game collection, I have to finish at least 1000 of those. Yikes.

Two solutions:

You can stop buying games of course. This solves the problem

You can stop worrying about beating the games in your collection. This negates the problem

But you need to play all the games you own before you die *grin*

Do what I did: I set up a "gaming deadline" for my collection. Every month, I need to finish 5 games (for any system, as long as I finish 5 or more). On the months where I'm working on 3 current gen titles that take a long time to finish, I play Genesis and NES titles in the meantime to meet my deadline. Then the following month I finish 3 or 4 next gen titles as I've been working on them for a while. Some months I finish like 15 games because I break out the Neo Geo CD and plow through those doges. I can't get enough of that system.

Ah, but I'm sure you're also aware of my compulsion to buy (and never finish) a lot of anime, too... so the whole "stop buying" route won't work, as I just can't help myself.

And to stop worrying about beating games in my collection? Perish the thought! That's one of the biggest reasons to play a game! Granted, certain games can never really be "beaten" - like, say, Brain Age - but the amount of games I have in that category is quite small... it might even be zero.

I think probably my biggest hold-up is I've become something of a side-quest whore. I literally had to force myself NOT to find all those damn golden bugs so I could actually FINISH Twilight Princess. I actually copied my quest log in Minish Cap so I could continue all the side-quest bullcrap (fusing those kinstones is.... well, a chore, to be honest) but still beat the game, since I was so close. If I can just get myself to not worry about all that jazz, then I might be in good shape.

On a side note, to all you who admit to having a similar problem as I do.... it's good to know I'm not alone *smile*

Well, if you can't stop buying, you could start selling - so sell, say, any game you haven't played in 6 months and don't see yourself really getting back to for another 6 months. And when you start doing this, you'll eventually stop buying games you aren't going to play for a while because you'll see how many games you're just not getting to.

> And to stop worrying about beating games in my collection? Perish

I disagree - a good game is about the fun you have while playing it, not about how grandiose the ending is.

Even games you've beaten you can always go back to and do more - beat it faster, get a better score, etc.

Nintendo is good. I like Nintendo. If you check my collection and my Bio, you'll find my Nintendo collection is actually much greater than my Sega collection. Well, that's just because nowadays, Nintendo's games and systems are much easier to come by than Sega's - at least for decent prices. Why is Sony better than Sega?

1. They still make great systems.
2. They still make systems period.
3. They support their systems (and for LOOOOOooonngg periods of time. Better than any other company by far)
4. Their AAA titles to CRAP titles is a much much lower ratio than Sega's (today at least)
5. They continue to make the sequels that people WANT instead of ignoring them completely.
6. They don't completely ruin their franchises (nor do they whore them out with hundreds of spin off games)
7. Their electronics are exceptional bargains (off topic, but oh well)
