UC students can expect a 7% increase and CSU students can expect a 10% this coming fall. This really blows... I go to Cal State, and Cal State Universities used to be affordable for low income students...well...not anymore. It costs about $1700+ per semester for a full time student. Last semester was at about $1500+. My co-worker who went to the same school (back in the days) told me it only cost her less than $400 per semester... @_@

My sister goes to UCLA, and they just sent her a bill for the difference of the increase.

What is the situation like in other states?

I gotta say, unless you've got a nice scholarship, there's absolutely no reason to go to a 4-year college as opposed to a community college for the first couple years.

Community colleges literally cost about one fifth of what the full universities do.

college is more than just the education, its also about the experience. you just dont get the same experience in the 12.5th grade as you do in a real university.

True, JC is basically just high school with ashtrays, but two years or so of university after transferring is more than enough to provide the experience.

And when you get right down to it, the end goal really is that little piece of paper that says you did it. Once you're out of college, nobody cares about anything else.

I agree w/ benstylus. I transferred from a community college and anyone can afford twenty something bucks per unit. Textbooks are insanely expensive though. I'm in a difficult position because I have to take certain classes to remain the music department in my school, and to do that, I'll probably have to give up my job because of conflicting schedules. If I give up my job, I can't pay for school. I'm looking for a part time job, but that's still a huge pay cut compared to a full timer, and they pay student workers just a bit over minimum wage. :(

I guess it all depends on whose dime your education is on... if it's funded by your parents then you treat it far differently than if you're paying your own way.

It seems now a days, education is only for the privileged, or for whoever can afford it. A lot of students who can't afford it drop out, and sadly, most get stuck with dead end jobs. Even if you are rewarded financial aid, it's still not enough to cover all your expenses. You can take out loans, and I know a lot of people who are in debt after they graduate (if they graduate). That's the harsh truth. It costs an arm and a leg to put yourself through college. I pay the majority of the bills at home, so this is not just a burden on me, but on my family as well. :(

#17 posted May 16, 2008 at 5:00pm (EDT)

btw, if anyone knows the answer this...

my sister is in the army reserves, and got deployed to iraq for a year. She never misses drill, and she's on her 7th year. Her contract is up next year. When she started school, she went to see the veteran's counselor in school and everything, contacted her unit, but they only gave her one check for $800 for her tuition and that was it. My friend's husband is also a veteran and going to school. he gets a check every month, and the only requirement is that he has to be a full time student. The only reason why my sister joined the military was because the recruiter said they would help her pay for college. Well, that's not happening, and it's really frustrating. Anyone else experience this kind of problem?

That's just stupid, Joe. The benefits are the main reason a lot of people go into the military... not to mention they're the main thing recruiters try and sell you on to sign you up.

gamefreak, was your sister of a lower rank than your friend's husband, or did she not serve as long? I'd definitely talk to some folks who know the rules and can help you with this...

benstylus - thanks for your help

She's an E4.
My friend's husband is around 60, and he's been a military man his whole life. Maybe he gets special treatment because he's served longer??
My sister (we're twins) signed up with a bunch of classmates her senior year. Of course half of them quit before even making it to boot camp, but for those who stuck around, some got support from the army for tuition, while some didn't. My cousin, just 2 days older than us, signed up for active duty, and he's going through the same problem as my sister. Army's not paying for him to go to college. It's a bummer because she felt like she wasted the last 7 years of her life because it was all for nothing. It doesn't help that no one in her unit knows what to do either...

This might be a good place to start.

http://legalassistance.law.af.mil/content/legal_as...

Also, your sis should be able to talk to a JAG about something like this to find out what exactly the army is supposed to be doing for her (not to mention the JAGs should know how to go about getting it).

And if the JAGs don't help, talk to the offices of politicians for your area - house representatives, state senators, etc.

And if you still don't get any help, talk to your local news stations.

Just keep a paper trail of everything you do - note down who you talk to, when, what they say, etc.

nationally recognized in your major is bullcrap. If you go to podunk U and it is rated #1 but no one has heard of it, no one cares about it. employers dont scour over the newsweek ranking of schools. If they heard of it, its a mark for you, if not, they dont care.

LOL.

Are you trying to brag or something? Because you failed miserably.

1) What does "nationally recognized" even mean? I was impressed that you were going to the 35th ranked school in the country and was going to look it up until I read "in my major". That seems like an awfully specific categorization to brag about. It's like saying "I have the best grades in tenth grade in my own home!"

2) "from a university"? Are you unwilling to even tell what "35th in the nation in my major with students over 6 feet tall and who wear jeans on Thursday" school you're attending? Come on...

I was going to take a couple years off after my AA, but I just recently figured out what I want to do, so I think I can sacrifice another couple years so I can make some good money asap after I get the BA and do the whole college life thing.

Wasnt talking to you Chad, atleast not mostly. Hell, no im not going there for reputation. Best college for me in Louisiana for what im planning to do, and is why i chose it over LSU. Man, i went there for a visit, and that place is fun as hell. More so than LSU, which surprised me, and is also another factor that went into my choosing.

Tulane sent me like a fudgein 27,000 scholarship and that was no where near enough to cover it. They are expensive as hell, plus i didnt like the school even though it DOES have a great rep. Just going someplace fun, cheap, but can still give me a good enough education that can compare to other universities.
