How is it that this story was never brought up? The first I heard about it was tonight driving home from work. Is this true or did they find this to be fake?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/uselect...

For the lazy:

"The Italian edition of Vanity Fair said that it had found George Hussein Onyango Obama living in a hut in a ramshackle town of Huruma on the outskirts of Nairobi.

Mr Obama, 26, the youngest of the presidential candidate's half-brothers, spoke for the first time about his life, which could not be more different than that of the Democratic contender.

"No-one knows who I am," he told the magazine, before claiming: "I live here on less than a dollar a month."

According to Italy's Vanity Fair his two metre by three metre shack is decorated with football posters of the Italian football giants AC Milan and Inter, as well as a calendar showing exotic beaches of the world.

Vanity Fair also noted that he had a front page newspaper picture of his famous brother - born of the same father as him, Barack Hussein Obama, but to a different mother, named only as Jael.

He told the magazine: "I live like a recluse, no-one knows I exist."

Embarrassed by his penury, he said that he does not does not mention his famous half-brother in conversation.

"If anyone says something about my surname, I say we are not related. I am ashamed," he said.

For ten years George Obama lived rough. However he now hopes to try to sort his life out by starting a course at a local technical college.

He has only met his famous older brother twice - once when he was just five and the last time in 2006 when Senator Obama was on a tour of East Africa and visited Nairobi.

The Illinois senator mentions his brother in his autobiography, describing him in just one passing paragraph as a "beautiful boy with a rounded head".

Of their second meeting, George Obama said: "It was very brief, we spoke for just a few minutes. It was like meeting a complete stranger."

George added he was no longer in contact with his mother and said:"I have had to learn to live and take what I need.

"Huruma is a tough place, last January during the elections there was rioting and six people were hacked to death. The police don't even arrest you they just shoot you.

"I have seen two of my friends killed. I have scars from defending myself with my fists. I am good with my fists."

Crap like this is why I don't play the lottery.... imagine winning a couple hundred million. Then everyone you know (and some you don't, or at least don't remember) comes out of the woodwork.

Well, Obama has met him before and has photos with him, it's not like the guy appeared out of thin air. Obama's just never made an effort to contact his brother (apparently). On 3 cents a day I don't think the brother had much of an ability to do the same.

I dunno... it just always seems like whenever someone tries to get out there and make a name for themselves, someone else in their life (in this case, a half-brother) inadvertently is hampering his effort.

Obama's dad is Kenyan, correct? Then it's not really that surprising he has someone related to him that lives in poverty, given the fact that an overwhelming majority of the entire continent of Africa lives in poverty, at least in relation to the average US citizen.

This story is probably completely skewed, I'm just surprised I haven't heard much about it.

But yeah, I have the same fear about winning the lotto; I worked at Best Buy 4-5 years ago, and though it wasn't nearly the same as winning the lottery, you had to see how many "friends" I hadn't spoke to in years found out the employee discount was incredible and found out that I worked there. Phone calls left and right like we had spoken everyday for the last 20 years...

It's not really that weird if there's any truth in this story. I have never met my biological father, he impregnated my mother, moved to Texas shortly after and never interjected himself in our life in anyway. My mother married a man, who I consider my father, when I was two and I have 4 half-sisters and a half-brother who I consider my sisters and brother. I have not known anyone else as my family, so they are my family. For a time I worked as a skiptracer for a collections company and ran a search on him and found he married and I have two other half-brothers and another half-sister. I have no desire to meet or make myself a part of my their life at all. It would just be strange.

I have a half sister, and if I found that out now and hadn't known her all these years, I'd look for her. If she were making 3 cents an hour, I'd send her a few hundred bucks. Different strokes for different folks. But a millionaire vs 3 cents an hour? Yeah....well, at least he cares about you right?

I don't think Obama has any obligation, moral or otherwise, to support this man. There is no way to know how any of us would feel in this situation.

I'm OK with panhandlers so long as they're actually holding pans. Anything less and they're just posers.

But I've seen some guys try to hold pans, but they just can't seem to handle them. I still give them some change because I think their attempt justifies something in return.

Live in Chicago, walk your regular routes and see the same 'bums' with the same stories and you will quickly learn you are not making a difference, only furthering their alcoholism. I've had 'bums' shove their cup in my face and demand 'Put a penny in the cup, honkey.' Dude was wearing nicer shoes than I was. I've learned to see them approaching, quickly hold out my hand and ask for a dollar and tell them I need it because I just lost my job. That always gets them riled up.

I don't know why people are in the positions they're in. Many get crap on. Many make mistakes. There is this notion that every bum is either a junkie or an alcoholic, but I'm not about to make that assumption. I've never seen a bum wearing nicer clothes than me. So yes, I sometimes give money or food to bums.

I never give money when I'm in NYC, but I'll offer to buy em a hotdog from one of the vendors. I don't think I've run into a bum yet that hasn't taken me up on the offer. The only bums I wouldn't give jack to is the ones on the boardwalk in Atlantic City.

I guess that explains why I don't give, I'm a independent. And all the bums in Chicago are either crackheads, alcoholics or scammers... only tourist gives these pukes anything. On top of that these people have already used up their gov't assistance on booze and crack and are spanging for more... explaining why you see them more in the latter half of each month.

Honest bums are the bomb. I give money to the ones that honesty say, "Need money for beer".

Fudge those that say they want money for food - for those folks I buy an extra bean burrito and give them that.

Interesting the "homeless corridor" here on the west coast. Many appear to travel from Seattle down to San Diego, migrating with the seasons. Lots end up in the Central Valley of CA where they can eat from and sleep in the orchards, and where they have easy access to urban areas for pan handling and blood letting for cash.

That doesn't mean you should vote for Obama. There's likely 5-6 others running; a true independent will vote for one of them (or kzn).
