posted this in electronics, but figure this forum actually gets read...
i need to pick up a new power adapter, but dell charges 70 for it. i've heard, but not confirmed that 'generic' power adapters will power a dell but not charge the battery (a missing pin that dell doesn't let them include).
does anyone know if this is true? if there is a reliable aftermarket store? basically, is there a reputable 'monoprice.com' type site for power adapters? i've done some basic looking online and am a bit overwhelmed -- tons of sites have it for $20 but they all look a bit... shady. |

I got one on Ebay for my HP for $12 and it broke after 6 months. Even if that rate it's still way cheaper to buy one every 6 months so I'd say go in that direction. |

i'd appreciate that. it seems that power adapters are one of those ebay items that gets spammed a million times as 'buy it now'... super shady (though i did have great results buying an usb scale from one of those companies).
as mentioned, right now i've got my power cord splinted together, so there is no way i'm spending 70. $20 on a knockoff, though, would be worth it as long as it lasts for 6 months or so. |
