trying to get into a "chat room"...i didn't care what it was, I just wanted to be in a room with other people talking, real-time. It fascinated me, the concept. I didn't think I'd get it to work! And then I found a chat room...made sure it wasn't full of robots...was satisfied, and left.

I used Geocities chats all the time. I agree, I just wanted to chat. It was so awesome.

I remember almost being scammed on Geocities chat too, by a guy named Scott Johnson (I can't believe I remember that name). I wanted to become a moderator of some of the chats (he claimed he was one), and I'm pretty sure he almost got money out of me. I was so green.

He did however get me into using ICQ.

I remember Talkcity. I would use an IRC client to chat on it, and I really wanted to be a moderator because it seemed like a kick-ass job (they were getting paid!) at the time. I also remember making a web page using Talkcity, as well....ahh, memories

First Online Game: Interstate '76 ...don't hate, I'd still be playing this if I knew people were online for it.
First Website: Crow's Nest ... can't believe that crap is still online, I never even finished it. God, it's probably atleast 15 years old. What a sight, to see my first website creation and now seeing what I do for freelancing. Pre-Yahoo Geocities was always awesome... so sad that Yahoo is finally closing down Geocities later this month * frown *
First Chat Client: ICQ ... wow, I can't believe it's still being used!
First Porn: Lycos Images, baby ... wasn't much gaming after that discovery.

This. And I used ICQ for a while. Then, in middle school, we'd get 10 or so kids in and MSN chat and think it was so awesome that we could talk that way.

Oh, and Napster. I was one of the first kids in school to download stuff, and I made some money from selling burned CD's of Britney Spears and N'sync. No shame!

I was big into paranormal/ghost/UFO stuff when I was younger, so I remember one of the first searches I did on a search engine was for ghosts. I found a website called http://ghosts.org/ (sadly, gone now), it was called Obi Wan's UFO/Paranormal Information Page or something. It had hundreds of stories people sent in of their own ghost encounters. I believe I first started using the internet around 1997-98.

I believe my first online game was Diablo, spawned version. Pretty sure I got the full game for Christmas, and proceeded to use trainer upon trainer with a friend of mine to reign terror over Tristram. There was something so fun about sending a portal out for people to come join us, only to have us slaughter them as soon as they appeared. Yeah it was mean, but it was funny as hell.

The same friend and I also hosted several "1on1on1 noobs only" games in StarCraft, where we would time an attack on the unfortunate third player.

Before Napster came along, I remember using FTP sites to get my music. I was always so excited to find no ratio ones, but I also remember going apecrap when I'd be on a 1:1 ratio FTP and my modem would disconnect after I finished uploading.

Kids today don't realize how good they've got it with these...these "torrent" thingies...

haha, I remember playing Diablo a lot too...awesome game. I'd be an butt-hole frequently as well..."trading" stuff, letting the guy drop stuff then slaying him, collecting people's ears until I ran out of space....good times. I also remember this like online game service, I wanna say it was called mPlayer or something like that...something with an m....and I played Road Rash against people on it, and Blood a few times.

I would frantically look for porn while constantly looking over my shoulder to see if either of my parents were walking into the room where the family computer was. At this point I didn't realize you could have different profiles so our computer had only one account and whenever they would get on to check email, the blank history was a dead giveaway. Of course, the want for more porn overrode the fear of discipline, so I was often banned from using the computer alone.

This.

I wasn't even allowed to surf the web until I was 14 years old. I also remember the first time my dad let me get on the internet I searched all over the place for everything. I remember clicking link after link and thinking "oh no I think I've gone to far into the internet, how do I get back?" It really was like the world was at my finger tips.

I remember schools having blocks on porn sites and gore gallery. This dog Bessie would show up everytime I tried to access a prohibited site.

Trying to fit as many midi and/or wav files onto a floppy as I could. Once I found out about MP3s, I was appalled that I couldn't fit even one onto a floppy. "How dare they?!" I thought.

Also, being excited when they released a "new" AOL.

This was mine too. Not sure how long ago this was, but just going in to chat rooms and trying to stir up trouble was great.

I started when I was 8. Then they added txt only Internet, and later dialup Internet. I remember finding a loophole where you could get unlimited downloads on the site by hanging up sooner then logging off since it only counted against your allotment if you logged off.

my earliest memory was trying to find information about World War 2 for a project I had to do in 6th grade when the Internet was first being used at my school. None of the teachers knew how to use it so I was at a total loss on what to do. www.ww2.com didn't exactly turn up much results at the time. I remember going on segasages.com before merged with IGN and going onto a chat room for my first time and being totally wow'd at the fact that I could talk to people from all over the country that way. I also remember learning how to clear history and cookies on the home computer so I wouldn't get caught looking at thing my mom didn't want me to see and having my computer crash from using Kazaa and Limewire.
