Thought this was a pretty good deal, those boxes sell for around $200 on ebay and they basically give you a penny to take it. |

And what does that cost? |

A 1-year plan is $20/month. If you pre-pay the whole year, it is $199.
Also, this deal is available like all the time. You can just go to Tivo.com and get this same receiver free without a rebate any time they have them in stock if you sign up for at least a year. And, when they don't have them in stock, you can do it from any of their authorized resellers for free after rebate. So, nothing really "hot" about this since it is a continuous, ongoing deal.

The tivo hardware is probably also leased from Tivo, which means you have to give it back if you cancel service. |

No you don't need to give it back if you cancel. Also unless its been changed its $12.95 a month which is what I pay. I got my box for free and its not a bad service. It is possible to use other DVR's and to record and burn shows but the Tivo makes it a bit easier and is worth it for the conveience if you use it alot. |

It is what I said above.
It is only $12.95 a month if you commit to at least 3 years of service. I try to stay away from contracts that long on technology-related things really. Heck, within 3 years, there could be tons of different DVR options...

Do you have a 30-second/commercial-skip feature on your Tivo? That's what I like most about my Dish DVR. I thought that that option had been removed from the Tivos and you had to actually FF now instead of just commercial skip ahead... Is that accurate?

I pay $12.95 on a monthly basis. No commitment needed. Also there is a 30 second commercial skip feature you have to unlock by pressing a few buttons on your remote.
This tells you how to do the skip http://www.modernhometheater.com/howto/tivo053003/... |

And how long have you been a member? It would continue.
Bah -- why are we even arguing this? All you have to do is go to tivo.com and look at the plans. It clearly states that it is $20/month. If you want anything lower than that per month, then you either have to pay for at least a year up front -- or do a contract commitment for multiple years. If you commit to 3 yeears, then it is $12.95 a month. Period.

Yeah, and mentions that it might forget it now and then and you'll have to reprogram it. Or a new firmware/update could come out that removes it forever.
For now, I prefer DVRs from companies that didn't bow to corporate pressure from the networks. Oh, and don't charge me a monthly fee at all just for DVR.

Yeah i just checked site and it looks like its changed. It was $12.95 a month when I signed up and I guess i'm grandfathered in under that. I did say unless its changed it was $12.95 so i guess it has changed. |

You CAN pre-pay. It is optional:
