I have Vista right now. I just got the laptop hence the delay. But I'd like to buy Windows 7 for cheap. I still have a .edu account if that'd help at all.

The 64 bit professional download from that site is actually the full version. Saved me a lot of effort trying to find my vista disk on the clean install. Did it all last night, about an hour download, installed checks out perfect. |

Nice. Does this work if the .EDU email address just forwards your email?

is there any reason to not get the pro version? its the same price. also, it says you need to buy the extra $13 disc if you want to upgrade from vista 32 to windows 7 64 bit. is this true? and for the pro version as well?

yep from what i have heard all you have to have is a college email address and you can get it for 29.99 or even get 7 professional for 29.99 as well. mise-well get the pro if you ask me. BTW I got it free through my college's affiliation with Microsoft (ITT-Tech) |

Like I said in another thread, I'm willing to sell my edu email and the confirmed password to get 7 for someone. |

Does this offer expire? I went and got my password already.
For whatever reason I am able to use my community college e-mail from 2008 to get this, but I'm kinda broke right now but would like to eventually get it.

That's what I was wondering, as I'm in a similar situation. Also, this is only for an upgrade version, right?

Yeah, I need to read more about this. I assume I can upgrade XP with any of them?

You can't upgrade from XP. You can use the upgrade version on XP, but you'll have to do a clean install (which I'd recommend anyway). |

Cool, thanks for the info. That's what I was going to do anyways.

not if you're doing a straight upgrade and don't do a clean install. (eg. vista 32bit to windows 7 32 bit)

For an Upgrade path it has to be the same OS version. For example, if you have Vista Premium 32-bit, you have to go to 7 Premium 32-bit. You can't go from Premium to Ultimate or 32 to 64 bit. Doing so requires a clean install, I believe.

when you do a clean install like this, how does W7 verify you had Vista installed in the first place? |
antwaan
| | #20 posted October 26, 2009 at 9:22pm (EST) |
i'm assuming the motherboard because i did a clean install on a brand new hard drive and it never asked for anything. i assumed i would maybe have to have vista already installed even if i was doing a clean install but everything went smooth.

You should be able to install it onto another partition. I'm pretty sure that's how I went about installing an upgrade version of Vista. I didn't want to install on top of XP, so I snagged a *nix version of parition magic, created a new one and installed to there.

Do you need a DVD drive for these downloads to burn the iso? This post is confusing me and my DVD drive is not working at the moment...

Ah the exe just unpacks the .box files and you can burn that. Sweet! :D

Got Windows 7 up and running on the macbook pro. $30 for the Pro version works perfectly but couldn't upgrade from a clean install of Vista Ultimate for some reason.
BTW 20 GB install is ridiculous. Vista was 12 or so why is 7 so damn large? Partitioned out 50 out of 300 for the Windows side of Bootcamp since OS X would be the main platform but would have allocated a little more if I knew Windows 7 took up so much space.

Australia.edu has free web based email for those of you who are looking for a .edu email. A friend got his australia.edu address recently and was able to take advantage of the deal in the second post.

I signed up for an australia.edu account and it was approved earlier today. It's kinda funny - it's gmail with an australia.edu address. Anyway, I used the address for the above Windows 7 offer and got my confirmation email within a couple of minutes.
And australia.edu looks like a general website for universities in Australia. The message you get when you sign up does sound fishy, but I signed up for an account over the weekend and was approved within a week without donating anything.
