So, I'm REALLY digging Whiskeytown, I like their style (well, former style seeing as how they're no more), etc - it's like a mash-up of rock and country (good, old country, not that modern crap that plagues the airwaves - think Johnny Cash rather than Keith Urban). I did a little research on them and such and unearthed a genre I've never previously (that I know of) encountered. ALT-COUNTRY! IT'S LIKE ALTERNATIVE COUNTRY! Anyway, anyone else into this stuff? Got any recommendations?

I don't know who Whiskeytown is, but I can think of a few country-ish artists/bands whose music is not played alongside such artists as Kenny Chesney and Toby Keith.
My Morning Jacket - Their earlier albums are better (listen to them). Those albums are called At Dawn and Tennessee Fire.
Jack Rose - Instrumental stuff, not limited to country and probably not quite what you're after. . .but maybe.
M. Ward - Haven't heard a ton, but it might be up your alley.

I'll check 'em out,, thanks Cantero!
Whiskeytown was fronted by Ryan Adams before he went all solo and such. I haven't listened to his solo stuff, so I don't know if they're similar or not.

Well, I've checked out some of the M. Ward stuff, and that's right up my alley. I also checked out My Morning Jacket, turns out I've heard Tennessee Fire before, but I remember why I didn't like it too much - it's a bit too whimsical/indie-ish/strange for me. I haven't hit up Jack Rose yet, though.

ok if you like m ward, and really who doesnt, try the following:
girl singers: jenny Lewis, neko case, camera obscura
boy singers: okkerville river, iron and wine, Midlake, wilco, and the new bright eyes new cd "cassadega", grizzly bear is another good alt country/folk act and on a stretch try band of horses and the besnard lakes as well.
That should keep ya busy for a while
Also Im not super into it but M Wards newest thing is a duet cd under the name She and Him with the actress zooey deschenel. That one is more of an fyi than a recommendation although my girlfriend likes it. |

Re: Wilco - you'd probably like their earlier stuff more than the recent stuff (I'd start with Being There).

Yeah, I've listened to Wilco before, and yeah, I like their earlier stuff much better. Even better is Uncle Tupelo, from whose ashes Wilco and Son Volt emerged.
Thanks for the suggestions, Goldbera. I'll have to check some of them out (though, I'm not too into bands with primarily female vocalists, somehow).

Well thats why I split it since some people have a major problem with one or the other. THOUGH how anyone can knock Neko Case's cd (Fox Confessor) is beyond me, Id have to say overall that is one of the best cds of the last decade. Its seriously memorable. The jenny lewis on was good, but not the same level for sure. |

I'll have to check out Neko Case. I can always make exceptions.

Hey I just checked a new artist I think you might like - this is more country I think, but overall, Id still consider it alt-country. Probably more country than "alt" anyways: Robbie Fulks is the guy. The cd I got is called Georgia Hard, but he has some more you might check some reviews. Its very old Johnny Cash style |
