Has anyone mentioned every single song by Ten Masked Men yet?
They're strictly a cover band. Look them up on youtube for their versions over the original videos.

Does anyone remember the videos some dude had on YouTube of famous guitarists soloing with the original audio stripped and replaced with some guy playing atonal guitar on top? Same user had an awesome Star Wars video with different James Earl Jones audio files played where Darth Vader normally speaks. One or many of the guitarists filed a lawsuit and his crap was removed...which is a tragedy.
They weren't covers but this thread reminded me. I MISS THEM. |

Hmmm... I disprove of most of these selections. Here are some of mine:
Pearl Jam - Throw Your Arms Around Me (Hunters & Collectors)
Pearl Jam - Patriot (Steven Van Zandt)
Persuasions - Any Way The Wind Blows (Frank Zappa)
Jason Faulkner - Photograph (Def Leppard)
Lars & The Bastards - To Have and To Have Not (Billy Bragg)
Nirvana - Molly's Lips (The Vaselines)
Me First & the Gimme Gimmes - Save The Best For Last (Vanessa Williams)
Freedy Johnston - Coffee Coffee Coffee (Tom T. Hall)
Elliott Smith - Thirteen (Big Star)
Fountains of Wayne - Baby, One More Time (Britney Spears)
Hey Ya - Matt Weddle (Outkast) --- Okay, I thoroughly approve of this. I have it listed under the band name (Obadiah Parker) rather than his.
Many others. Pearl Jam's covers are usually as good as they get: Baba O'Riley, Rockin' in the Free World, Save it for Later, Crown of Thorns, Gimme Some Truth...
Check out the Coverville podcast sometime too!

Dave Matthews Band has quite a few songs they've covered that are pretty good. I'm not around my computer right now so I couldn't tell you which one's but thought I'd throw my 2 cents into the hat.. |

great topic Ive been wanting to make a cd of these soon.
Here is some more I thought of off the top of my head:
Satisfaction - Devo (Rolling Stones)
Black Steel - Tricky (Public Enemy)
Inside and Out - Feist (BeeGees)
All Along the Watchtower - Hendrix (Dylan)
The Man Who Sold the World, Mollys Lips - Nirvana (Bowie, the Vasalines)
Hallelujah - Everyone ever, but I like the John Cale one, many like the Jeff Buckley one (Leonard Cohen)
Hurt - J Cash (9 inch nails)
Higher Ground - Chili peppers (S Wonder)
Tainted Love - Soft Cell (Gloria Jones)
if you count rap songs that use the puffy method of using a whole bar sample, I really like That De La Soul/ Teenage fanclub cover of Free Fallin' (Tom Petty) on the judgement Night soundtrack (awesome cd, horrible movie) |

If you wanna take it there I think you need to give Gary Jules (sp?) his due. He pretty much owns that song now. Also there are a lot fo these "take a full song and make it acoustic" type covers. One I dig is "teardrop (massive attack, theme to "House") redone by Jose Gonzalez. Also this whole cd: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sounds_Eclectic:_The_...
I also really dug the Seu Jorge/Bowie soundtrack to Life Aquatic - rebel Rebel is da bomb. Man there are a lot of covers - I keep thinking of em! |

I'll have to give this more thought, but when I think of good covers, it's not just about sounding like the original, but making it better! So, I think one of the all time greats at covers is Marilyn Manson. He takes a good song, and actually makes it better:
-Sweet Dreams
-5 to 1
-Personal Jesus
-Tainted Love
-I Put a Spell on You
Another great band at covering songs, but making them better is Metallica: just listen to Garage, Inc.
Also, 2 great blues cover albums:
Eric Clapton - From the Cradle
Aerosmith - Honking on Bobo
Any games you can't get rid of here?

Goldbera gets plussed for his reference to the Judgment Day soundtrack and that song in particular.
Since the Fugees were brought up...
Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You - Lauryn Hill (Frankie Valli)
Gone Til November - Soul Asylum (Wyclef Jean)
Bohemian Rhapsody - The Braids (Queen)
Mrs. Robinson - The Lemonheads (Simon & Garfunkle)
Always On My Mind - Pet Shop Boys (Willie Nelson)
Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon - Urge Overkill (Neil Diamond)
She Don't Use Jelly - Ben Folds (Flaming Lips)
I'm going more with "Cover Songs I've Enjoyed" rather than "Best". |
