I just bought a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB video card, cause I want to play Doom 3 so bad right now its not even funny. I figured with my specs and current card, It would run decent on the lowest settings...well, I was wrong. It NEVER ran smoothe at all. Heres what I have.
XP Pro
AMD Athlon XP 1800
1.53Ghz
640MB of Ram
Nvidia GeForce 4 MX 4000 64MB
Well, this sucked, so I borrowed my brothers FX5200 128MB card and it ran it just as bad at the GeForce 4..so I'm like..what the crap. I thought with my budget, I'd go all out. I found this ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB AGP 8x on ebay. Its not here yet, but this card SHOULD run Doom 3 like a GOD right? Thats what I've heard from everybody. My specs are exceeding the minamum requirements, and this is a good card. Why didnt the FX5200 run it good?
I am also worried about my AGP slot, for I used to have a GeForce 2 AGP card, and it all of a sudden died on me..I dont know why..
What is Overclocking?
How could my GF2 die like that?
Could it possibly be my AGP slot?
The 9600 Pro should run Doom 3 without any problems right?
Its too late now, but should I have bought a better card, like a 9800 Pro/XT?
Which is better, the XT or Pro?
What happens If I have 2 video cards in my computer at once?
Someone please answer these questions. I just want to know as much info as possible, because I dont want anything to go wrong with my 9600 Pro, or my PC for that matter.
Thanks.

doom 3 is not going to run like a GOD with that setup. but it should run.
the fx5200 is weak. a 9800 would eat it. a 9600 would eat it for that matter.
the 9800xt is superior to the 9800pro.
run one card at a time. make sure you remove drivers for the old card and install new drivers for the new card.

You shuld be able to run it at 800x600 low settings fine on that setup with the 9600
Doom 3 Takes Quiet a Hefty machine an tends to run better on GeForce 5900 Ultras & Above ... it runs best on a GeForce 6800 Ultra Compared to The X800 XT PE :)
XT 9800 Vs. 9800Pro ... XT is about 10% faster if that. honestly not worth the extra bucks nowa days when a 9800 pro 128mb (NON SE) is like 180$

so that 9600pro 256 should give me a good game goin. Like, will it lag? will ti run smoothe most of the time, because the geforce 4 lags unbearably.

That still boggles my mind.
I have a similar setup (Athlon XP 1700+, 512MB DDR RAM, Geforce FX 5200 128MB)
and it ran smoothly 99% of the time.
How long has it been (if ever) that you've backed up your hard drive and
reinstalled everything, windows and all, from scratch?
That's like the only thing I can think of as to why it wouldn't run well.
Windows gets cluttered with crap and most techies recommend
aa clean install once a year or so.
Heck, after playing with the config file, I was playing on medium details
and it was still running smoothly.

I have the settings on the lowest as they can go, and even turned off all the advanced settings, and it still lags like crazy

Uhm....I hope so, for your sake.
My mind is still boggling over the fact that your system is slightly better than mine and
I could run the game fine.
Have you gone to a site like Black Viper and shut off unnessesary Windows XP
processes?
Don't know if that'll help, but might as well do it to save some CPU cycles and RAM:

I wish.
But it only takes up the AGP slot and not the 3 PCI slots next to it, so I'm
pretty sure it's not a 5900 Ultra.

Ahh don't you just love Consoles for this reason. Just pop it in and it plays. And usually nice and pretty and no slow down because of limits or conflicting things or not enough memory etc...
Seriously though not to tread on your topic mike. Sorry.
But maybe it's your CPU too? 1.53GHZ is by no means anything that powerful compared to current standards... Maybe this is the problem?

Yeah, but you can't tinker with and upgrade a console. You get what the company
makes and that's it (aside from mod chips).
I much prefer building my own system and tinkering with it. That's 1/2 the fun for me.

Ok well you can sit and tinker and I'll sit and play.
I play games to play and have fun. Not to tinker. Though I can admit tinkering is fun and all in the end I am there to play the game. Not tinker around with other things just to get it to work.

Odd... what about his FSB? Maybe the speed is lower and it's bottlenecking the graphics card performance? hmm....

Front-Side-Bus (FSB) is a term describing a Processor (CPU)-to-system memory data bus. It is the speed that the CPU communicates with RAM (memory). The front side bus on a computer connects the processor to the north side bridge, which comprises the memory bus, PCI bus and AGP bus. In general, a faster frontside bus means higher processing speeds and a faster computer.

It's probably not your card but something else. (Obviously). Do you have a lot of things loading? Do you have lots of programs working in the system tray? Do you have spyware using up resources?

Erm...sorry that it's still not working.
Hmm. Time to run some third party apps, I think.
Norton System Work, iolo System Mechanic, ...
Oh. Don't know if I've recommended this before.

I program that will scan and show you everything that is listed to run each time you start up etc. It will show you the things running and you can "fix" them or whatnot. So if things like spyware is installed we can see and such. I want to see how many things are running on your computer and whatnot. Garbage things like qttask and such don't need to be there.

Edit: A word of caution. When you run it. Just run it and post the scan results here. Do not attempt to remove (Check and Fix) things unless you know what your doing. If you remove key things you can screw up your windows boot etc.. (Have problems booting into windows etc..).
So just run it and post the scan results here. Don't actually click any of the boxes and select. "Fix this item" or anything.
Don't want you to screw up your computer and then come back blaming me for it.

Well, that's what I'd do -- but I'm not convinced anything there will change your Doom3 experience much.
That 9600Pro should run Doom3 quite nicely, actually. I'm not sure why you are having such trouble and I don't see anything obvious in your process list.
Sorry...
