Just wondering what do people consider the best spyware/adware removal program? I was using the Yahoo program on the toolbar but recently reformatted my computer so thought I'd ask before I redownload something.

Spybot - S&D and Ad-Aware are two of the more well known ones.

At my workplace, we run both Ad Aware and Spybot in Windows safe mode on affected PCs. If they don't get rid of the malware, we use HijackThis (more powerful than either of the other programs, but you have to know what you are doing).

Thanks for the help, I'll probably end up using Spybot and see how that goes.

I'd recommend both because they can pick up stuff the other didn't.

I'll second that.
It doesn't seem to matter which is run first, the other will typically find something else.

Has anyone ever tried the Yahoo program before(built in to the toolbar)? I'm just curious how that really compared to these others.

If I remember correctly, the yahoo toolbar previously had spyware in it.
With those programs, they can be set to only run if you need them.

Does c-net put spyware in their downloads? I thought I remember something that somewhere. I went to the ad-aware site(lava-something software or some such name) and the only download they offer is through c-net. I just finished putting spybot on there so that's done, they offered 4 different sites so I picked on that wasn't c-net *raspberry*

I actually went to PC World to download the ad-aware instead, they were hosting a download. I also decided to go ahead and try the Microsoft beta program. Anyone really care for this one at all?

Actually this microsoft one seems to work nicely as it runs constantly stopping some items from installing. The others do nice cleanups, think I'll keep all 3 *raspberry*

Yeah, Microsoft's is actually pretty good. I use it alongside Spybot and all is well.

Yes. No one company has got all the bases covered. At least run Spybot or Adaware once to see if McAfee is letting anything through.
