Just a question about the 3850 AGP card in general: is there a CPU/Mobo requirement (other than AGP, of course)? I searched around and there are lots who claim that you need a pretty good CPU to utilize that card. My old PC is an Athlon64 3200+, and I'm wondering if I could even put that card to use.

That's the exact CPU that I have in the machine I pulled it from. I bought the card to upgrade the 9800 that was in it. Once that was done, the ram became the bottleneck. So I just decided to bite the bullet upgrade and replace the whole works. I'll turn the old one into a media server and just use the 9800. (That's why I'm selling the 3850). With all that being said, with enough ram, the bottleneck would be the CPU...but not by much. |

How much RAM? I've currently got 2 GB PC3200.
 |
G_Prime

| | #12 posted June 9, 2009 at 5:25pm (EST) |
I had 1 gig, so lack of ram was definitely the bottleneck in that system. With 2 gigs, I would think either the CPU or the ram would hold the card back a bit (depending on what you were doing at the time) No doubt, with 4, the only thing that would slow the card would be the CPU.... |

Coolness. Thanks for the input. Maybe I'll pick up one of those cards when they're nice and cheap.

Or sell off your parts while they're worth a lot and buy C2D system. I did that, paid a total of $20 after selling my old parts. It's fun to sell 1GB DDR1 for $50, then buy 4GB DDR2 for $15 AR |

How much you asking for it?
Also what make and model of PSU did you have on it ?
it may have been the bottleneck problem you spoke of and not the ram or cpu mentioned prior afterall is why I ask high end cards need high end PSU's with a good sustained 12V amperage on a single 12V rail as wattage in PC PSU's means nothing power wise really and where most cheapo company's pull a fast one on people becuase they thought the more watts the more power and that is not the case the power comes from the 12V rail and the amps are what counts for the GPU's.

The PSU is a 550 watt Coolmax...(I forget what model it is...). Looking specifically for trades involving some recent PC games (Fallout 3 / Crisis / Left 4 Dead...that kind of thing). If I had to sell I'd be looking for around $60 plus shipping...in that ballpark. |

Much appreciated!
Right now I'm debating whether or not I should try to eke more life out of my second PC, or if I should save up my money and then build an entirely new one. Choices...

Very, very tempting. I'd have to get a new PSU though...I don't think 400W is enough, right? How hot does the card run? My old PC's case isn't exactly well ventilated.

I was running it on a 450 watt PSU with no problems...
The card draws < 70 watts...
The card has a very effective GPU fan, and runs < 55*C and is still surprisingly quiet....

I have a PCI-E one if people are looking. I would prefer to sell so I can put it towards my new card.
