I have been using an older model PC at the library I run and now we have newer models. I need to transfer all of the files on the older PC over to the newer one. How can I do this and keep all of the book databases and such.

Move files to an external hard drive or remove the internal hard drive from the old PC and install it in the new as a secondary drive and then move files.

Have you looked into open source alternatives to the programs you need? For instance, Microsoft Office can be replaced with Open Office, Photoshop with Gimp, Outlook with Thunderbird, etc.

There's also the hard drive enclosure option, wherein you put the hard drive into an enclosure, and then use it as an external. Although that won't transfer the registry entries that may or may not be needed to run said programs.

Installed programs can not be transferred from OS to OS, it would have to be reinstalled again, and then you could move over the files/database for the program.

yeah thats the issue- you would be able to transfer the files without a problem many ways but you would still need to install the program; just transfering the folder isn't going to work.

Why don't you take out the harddrive of the new machine
and put the harddrive of the old one in? Setup as the
primary, and use the new hd as the secondary, if you want.

of course you may have to reinstall drivers, video, mobo
and so on. But if you have the windows disc handy, it should
be fine.
don't do it if it's raid! because you have to be very careful!

before you transfer you might want to set the old pc to the lowest
video setting and reset it when you put into new pc!

The only other way is to clone the hard drive, but that takes a
software utility, network cable, or some other transfer method.

I have researched programs that move apps as well as files but at the same time thay are rather expensive and we run on donations so it is not an option.

Does anyone on GTZ have one of those programs you researched? Maybe they could loan it to you. Another question for you...does your new computer run the same OS as the old one?

I have Norton Ghost and it's OK, but there are free programs made by hard drive manufacturers that pretty much do the same thing- like DiscWizard available here:

What program(s) do you need to transfer to the new PC? There's a decent chance that you can simply copy the program's install folder to the new PC and it will still work. If it requires a Registry entry, those can be transferred from the old PC too.

I downloaded the Resource Mate v3.0 demo, installed it, and then transferred the install folder (C:\Program Files\Resource Mate 3.0 Demo) to a new PC and it still worked.
Your non-demo version may be different of course, but it wouldn't hurt to try to copy the install folder to the new PC and see if it will load properly.

Another possibility is to contact the company and ask if there's a way to give them your license info and download a replacement copy of the program.

If you do try to manually transfer the install folder and run into a problem, post again and maybe we can think of a fix :)
