so in order to upgrade from XP to Windows 7, a clean install requires a HD reformat? Or at any rate, after installing 7, a complete reinstall of all applications from original media?
There is no path to just clean install the OS without touching data or apps? |

Yeah, a clean install will wipe your data. Recommended as it cleans out all the crap, but still you'll have to reinstall all of your programs |

Thanks, isn't that an incredible time waster though?

Meh, depends. I personally find it worth the speed increase, but I don't really have too much installed. Just copy your old stuff to an extra drive and drag everything over. It also helps if you have all of your games on Steam or something... |

The good thing is that Windows 7 installs 10 times quicker than windows xp. When I did a full install on my system it deleted everything as it should, except that it left the game Tribes 2 installed on Windows 7 for some reason.

I don't think you can drag apps over though, can you?
How about settings? |

I was referring more to dragging documents and game saves. For some reason I'm thinking there is a way to save your XP settings, but I do not know if W7 can use them |

so all applications must be reinstalled from the original media? Quite a chore. |

You can transfer files and applications from XP to 7 as long as you buy a new Windows 7 computer, and connect the two with a transfer kit with compatible software. Not all apps are capable of this, but the majority are. |
